Are the DQ remakes on the DS worth picking up or should I just stick with the originals on the SNES (with the appropriate translation patches)? Updated graphics are nice, but I hate playing long games on the tiny DS screen. I'm curious if all the added bonuses in the remake are worth the cost.

Most of the Dragon Quest DS games have very good reviews, so if you are worried they may not be good or worth it, I don't think you can go wrong with any of them.

Dragon Warrior 4 is only for the NES or PSX. Both the PSX version and DS version are the same game which the DS version may or may not have a few minor extras. The NES version of Dragon Warrior 4 is also the only English localization outside of Dragon Quest 4 Chapters of the Chosen.
I'd go with the DS version. Reason for this is that on the NES you're still required to use the archaic stairs/search/talk in order to do any of the following; going down stairs, searching areas, or talking to NPCs. The graphical update is also obvious, as well as the DS game moves at a quicker pace.
Also wouldn't you rather own the games over emulation? Dragon Quest 4 can be found easily for cheap. Dragon Quest 5 is the only one that has been discontinued.

I've recently started looking for these and yeah, DQ5 isn't easy to find cheap. I was hoping to grab these for around $10 each since they've been out for awhile, but that is not going to happen.
Still, they look excellent and worth buying if you've got the money.

I just hate playing RPG's on a tiny screen. That's the only reason I still haven't finished FF III. I guess I'll have to get used to it if I'm going to play DQ IX.

You could always get one of those items you can put onto the DS to show up on your tv. Some games you won't be able to play of course but most you will.

Yeah, get DQ IV: Chapters of the Chosen for sure, and if you like it (which I strongly believe that you will), get DQ V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride. Pretty limited print as far as I know, and you'll most likely not find this in your local Gamestop or whatever. One of the more expensive older, used DS games on eBay, for example.
I can't say for sure, but I doubt that we will see a Western release of DQ VI: Realms of Reverie, but I certainly hope so. Like Final Fantasy, VI is the best DQ game I've played, though I've yet to play Dragon Quest IX.

What device would that be?

These games are totally worth it. The graphics more resemble Dragon Quest VII but you can't zoom out. I am currently playing Dragon Quest V and thourghly enjoying it. The game takes up both screen so It doesn't seem small at all and you can always get a DSiXL if you want a bigger screen.

4 on DS has some flaws though due to the way they translated it. It starts off with really heavy "text accents" that can be hard to read/understand sometimes. They eventually get lazy and stop doing that pretty much altogether though.
They also neglected to translate the party chat, and cut that out entirely, which is probavbly like half the text in the game, so good job there guys...It's also a really handy feature for remembering what the hell you were supposed to be doing, so hope you can remember well enough while playing, since you can't rely on it being there.
Luckily, 5 fixes those problems for the most part. There's at least one guy in 5 talking with a text accent but it's not as bad. And party chat is thankfully present.

I'd love to play the translated PS2 version of DQ IV if I could figure out a way to do it on my PS2. I have the McBoot exploit and a HD, but I don't think it's as easy as putting an iso on the HD and telling the PS2 to boot it.
The DSiXL is nice, but $200 is a bit pricey for a few extra inches (hehe...).

If you have mcboot, you could get ESR and do it that way probably. I'm pretty sure that's already a DVD game so patching it would be easy enough too.

I would get them, I'm using the DSi XL and it's not that bad.

ESR? Is that the transfer program that uses your computer hooked into the PS2 via an ethernet cable? If so I think I tried that once and couldn't get it to ever connect.

ESR is a thing that tricks the ps2 into thinking games are dvd movies. the network thing is openps2loader, which would probably also work (just set that up for myself today actually, it's kinda neat).
Anyway, kinda drifted from the topic here. DQ5 is plenty fun on DS, too. Especially if you'd prefer sprites to 3D models.

None of the four NES Dragon Warriors have a "STAIRS" command, though the first did have the "Door" command.
EDIT: Oh yeah, the first game had STAIRS after all.

My bad, I guess DQ IV is for the PSX, not the PS2.
