Before I say anything else:

This is really a great resource to have at your fingertips; as far as I can see it's absolutely correct. If you've ever found yourself wondering what sort of processor X system had, or want some easily accessible backup, look here.

On the other hand, I see reason to be wary of this listing as well. The release dates are half the story about a system as they show literally what it was up against. The problem here is that we don't see the systems as they had appeared in the lineup over in ol' Japan, which is a fact of more than just passing interest (though this is by no means a flaw attributable only to them; all western gaming sites make similar omissions simply because it tells the story as it happened here) to game collectors and enthusaists...people who like to find good games should know they existed!

To sum it up: I'd say this is a great look at things from the familiar perspective of the US. consumer, but unfortunately, there's no simple commentary -- "originally released c. 198x in Japan" that would help the average internet viewer sort things out.

You know, I think I should make a similar page for these time periods in Japan. Where's our MSX, CoreGrafx and Bandai Pippin, anyways? We could use a page for handhelds as well.

they even have some wrong info on the first site i looked at, as the Max. Cart Size of SNES and Neo Geo (48 and 328 Mbit??? should be 64Mbit, though no game ever had this size and i don't know at least 500+Mbit)

and it shows quite clear how superior the snes was ;) especially compared to genesis:

4>2 Parallax Backgrounds
128>80 Sprites
256>64 Colors
15Bit>9Bit Color Palette
64*64>32*32 Sprites

MSX came out shortly after the home video game/computer market crashed. Only two were released in the US if I remember right. One was sold in music stores with music keyboard for composition. I forget what the other one was, but both were sold as speciallity items, not as computers.

By the time the Pippin could get here, computer prices had come down to the point that it didn't make since to purchase.

The Pippin @World (US model):

64*64>32*32 SpritesSuch stats mean little. It's the games that matter. Look at the background in Sonic the Hedgehog 2's Hill Top Zone and then try to explain how that's only "2 Parallax Backgrounds."

In any case, isn't the SNES vs. Genesis thing a bit... 1992? ;)
