sims 3 expansion pack help

I wanted to buy a sims 3 expansion pack to go with my sims 3 game and was wounder how you use an expansion pack with the sims 3 game since this is my first sims game. Is the expansion pack a play alone game or is it like an add on where you just add this expansion to your sims 3 game or both. Just need to know how the expansion pack works before I buy one and may find out it's not an add on to sims 3 and thanks ahead of time for your help.

I can only assume that it works like every sims expansion ever, and merely adds new content to your existing Sims 3 game.
The only one I think that was ever different was Sims Life Stories. That was a stand-alone, and that tanked.

Anything for The Sims 3 so far, be it an expansion pack (which expands the base game) or a stuff pack (which adds stuff to the base game) does, in fact, require the base Sims 3 game. It's the same exact thing as any other "expansion pack"... and it says so on the box/website in big letters. As long as you've got the main game, you're fine.
