My 60GB launch ps3 is dead :(
Is it a good time to buy a new console? Is there anything that's coming down the line to wait for?
I'm not really interested in playstation move.
Are the new ps3 slims quiet? do they work well as bluray players?

No, you seem to have a casual attitude. Buy a Wii.

Unless there are some PS3 games that you absolutely need to play on a regular basis, I would probably wait for the next inevitable price drop when they bring out yet another SKU.

So, the more accurate question is "Is it worth it to replace my current (recently dead) PS3?"
If you were playing it on a regular basis and you have a decent library of games ... at the very least it would be worth getting it repaired.
The current slims offer less in the way of features than the 60 Gig launch units (no PS2 BC, less USB ports, no built in memory card slots) and since all PS3s seem to be generally resistant to short-term failure, it's not as if you're going to get a wildly "more reliable" system.
I've heard conflicting reports on the fan volume for the slims, some say they're loud others say they're whisper quiet.
I think that Sony is going to continue to bring good exclusives down the pike for the life of the system, and with the price drop and larger installation base we're going to see more 3rd party titles and import ports on the shelves than we did in the first few years of the system.
Furthermore, I don't think you have to worry about The Move being "necessary" for anything in the future so if it's not your thing, you can pass on it and still get the core PS3 experience.

It's as good a time as any if that's your main playing system but if it's just been collecting dust then I'd wait for another price drop.

Can't you get the 60gb repaired? The 20/60gb's are the best PS3's.

I know, but I don't want to get into some BS situation where I'm always waiting for it to die again. I've read online that even if you get it fixed it only lasts a few months. :(
2. If you were playing it on a regular basis and you have a decent library of games ... at the very least it would be worth getting it repaired.
Yeah. I think you and jcalder kind of hit it on the head. I haven't really been playing it much lately. I've played FF13 and bioshock recently, but that's it. Maybe it makes sense to wait until Christmas and get a bundle or something.

I wasn't aware there was buzz about a price drop. I wouldn't mind having a 250GB Slim but I don't have the disposable funds to take the Nestea plunge on one.

You ought to get the PS3 repaired and then sell it then. 60gbs go for a nice amount. What exactly is wrong w/ it? Is it something Sony might fix?
If you're not enjoying the PS3, tho, I don't see a reason to get one right now. Heck, I'd wait until they're $50 and the new system is out (unless the new one looks enjoyable & has BC). Can't say I blame you for letting it collect dust. I almost never play the Wii or 360 I own. (Tho I've been playing the 360 a lot lately since I borrowed a friend's copy of FFXII and a few months ago I was playing Tales of Symphonia 2 on the Wii). I'd rather be playing some SNES, Genesis or Turbo Grafx game. *shrugs*

No, now's not the time. Wait for them to go on clearance for $99. That's what I normally do. Or wait for the next gen consoles to come out in 2013 - 2014. It's cheapest that way, and by then all the major kinks are worked out, and the games are all in the clearance bins at Gamestop for $3.99 each.

Meanwhile, play your Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo and be happy like the Village People. :villagepeople:
EDIT: I just noticed Mobiusclimber pretty much said the same thing! haha, wow we must think alike!

I'm trying to hunt down a 60gb version, hardware based PS2 compatibality is the reason why. There`s mods that has been done to make them run colder so if you can find one of those on eBay or mod one that's your best bet.

Even after I bought my 120GB slim last year, I was still shopping a round for a 60GB to play my PS2 games on. Now I'm content with just my old PS2 after hearing so many stories about peoples 60GB's crapping-out on them.
It doesn't sound as bad as the RROD problem, but still it's enough to make me think twice about buying a 60GB now.

While you could always pull out your PS2 to play PS2 games or if you don't have one then purchase one for cheap, however I'd recommend getting the PS3 itself fixed.
Sending the PS3 to Sony to get fixed would probably cost the same amount as a used PS2, you don't have to switch memory cards or purchase more to keep all your save files backed up, and the PS3 updates PS2 titles to 1080p which looks amazing(really 720p quality though since it's not native 1080p.) I have yet to play a PS2 game I own that doesn't work properly on my PS3.
Also, this really isn't like the 360. Getting it fixed it's not going to die on you in six months and you're going to have to get it sent in again. I have a launch PS3 and have had no problems with it.

One cool thing is that you can still backup your PS2 game saves on any new PS3, you just can't play the games off it. Those can be transferred back to the PS2 card any time so you still don't have to buy any extra PS2 memory cards; just use one and keep your PS3 memory card transfer adapter.

With the 360's seeing a nice price drop lately, and with the Move bundles and everything, I think it's logical to expect Sony to do some kind of price drop themselves. That's what I'm waiting for. That and they still haven't even rolled out the newer chipset models (2101A & B) to a lot of retailers yet. Even if they don't price drop for awhile, it would be nice to at least get some nice game bundles with the new chipped systems. Microsoft and Nintendo have been doing it for years, may as well wait it out for big Sony to follow suit.

Ok this time i don't agree with you os given i'm a PS3 owner myself.
I been enjoying it's exclusive so far such as Uncharted 1&2,Demon's Souls,Valkyire Chronicles and 3d Dot Game Heroes.
I just think C0lb33r should get his 60GB repaired then sell and replace it for a slim, but hey that's that's what i think at least.
Still it's up to you C0lb33r if you can't live'without playing those exclusive that's what i suggest.
About the only reason to keep the (60GB) is for the bc on (PS2) titles nothing more.

Considering that the suggestion was to play older game consoles, then ALL the PS3 titles can be considered "exclusives." No one has even brought up the 360 except to bash the RROD problem (again).

I've been trying to get a PS3 for awhile now since I'm actually interested in some of the library. I want to play God of War 3, 3D Dot Heroes and Little Big Planet for starters.
I missed one on craiglist for $50 last week (!!!!!) but I'm hoping to get one sometime in the near future.

You could wait a bit and probably save $50 on the price if you can hold out until closer towards the end of the year.
For now, you are not likely to see a reduction in PS3 pricing until we get to around Christmas time, and see a launch of the PS3 and Xbox motion devices.
So, yes, now would be a good time. Myself, i'm waiting until there is another custom PS3 bundle, that has a different color or style of PS3. (I really hope we get a white version).

I ended up getting a new PS3 after mine YLOD'd, I did a lot of research before hand and read several people saying that their PS3 failed again a few months down the line even after sending it to Sony for repairs. You could either sell your PS3 as is (there are plenty of people out there willing to buy and try to repair them), or send it into Sony for repair and then sell it.
As for getting a new one, that's entirely up to you. I have a growing BR discs and PS3 games, so getting a new one made sense for me. If you only have a few games and don't really use it that much, like others have said you might be better off waiting until they go on sale during the holiday. You could get a XBOX360 in the mean time, the new one looks pretty slick and you can also get the older models for a good price due to the recent price drop.

That's why i mention the PS3 exclusive enough for it now to own one.Oh btw and don't give me the bs that it's too expensive either originaly it was was,but i think it's fair now.As for the 360 it has a good selection of games.Still i've avoided it...due to it's high failure rate though the recent "360 slim" is supose to be a better build from what i hear.
nuff said.
