Not to spoil it for anyone who hasn't, but the ending is a huge disappointment. Thinking back, I guess most games were like this. I suppose it beats "CONGRATULATIONS" followed by the credits, but it wasn't much better.

I expected a big battle with Gnasty Gnorc at the end, but instead it involved chasing around a couple guys with keys, then chasing Gnasty to the top of a platform and breathing fire on him once. Even the little quip/cutscene of him "dying" wasn't handled properly, as it cut off and went to the ending before the animation could complete.

Luckily, the rest of the game was great fun. My four-year old loves watching me play. I immediately bought the sequel from Ebay.

They got better through 3. It did get a bit repetitive at times, but each one was a step above the prior. Insomniac did a great job with that series while they had it.

I never did like the ending to Spyro. The games themeselves were great up to Spyro 3, but the stories were never that good.

That was my childhood favorite. I remember it taking a long time to beat it - particularly because I was hunting for all the gems and statues. I was stuck at the final boss for a long time, because he kept going to fast and I couldn't keep up. After a few tries I realized I could just charge through the castle and flame his ass. I remember really hating the part inside the machine or what ever where you had to fly over the lava with only the aid of the platforms that kept retreating inside the walls. Today, it's a very easy game. I have fond memories of this one, as well as the other two that came out on the PSX shortly thereafter.

The only ridiculous part was the "tree tops" level. I have no idea how anyone could get 100% on that level without using a FAQ. The crazy stuff you have to do to get to that one distant island would take hundreds of tries and some luck to discover.

I am a strict anti-FAQ player, but I had to hit up gamefaqs for that one. I wouldn't normally bother, but after spending all the time to 100% everything else in the game, I wasn't about to let a few gems go uncollected.

Back when I was a kid I didn't really have computers or game guides to use, so I would just mess around and eventually figure things out. I remember getting around 95 percent completion back in the day, and recently went back and got all of the statues/gems I couldn't find. I ALWAYS wondered what was under the secret door in the last HUB, I even tried seeing if I could somehow trigger a glitch and get under there when I was maybe 5 or 6. Back then I always thought it was another fight with Gnasty Gnorc, perhaps with infinite flying and the fireball powerup.
