I can't seem to find a reverse controller adapter to plug PC Engine/Turbo Duo joysticks (including the 6 button Ave 6) into a USA Turbografx 16, so I decided to try something. I opened a Turbo Tap (Turbografx 16 type) and a white PC Engine Turbotap (small mini-din type) and compared the wire plug ins The plug in types were somewhat different, although the wire colors are the same. The USA model started with the black wire at pin 1. The Japanese model started it with the red wire at pin 1. I unplugged the cable from the USA tap and tried to plug it in reverse into the Jap tap. The pins didn't line up. So, I used a small flat head screwdriver and bent up each pin just slightly. After that the USA larger DIN type plug just fit into the PC Engine tap mainboard. I Closed it up and plugged it into the TG16. I plugged the 6 button Ave 6 controller into the first port on the tap, and it works! Now I can use any DUO or PC Engine controllers on the TG16, and even multiplayer the pads. Great stuff!

BTW: This will work the other way around as well. I used the PC Engine's Tap cable and plugged it into the USA tap (with the black wire starting at pin 1) and it works as well. So you can use regular TG16 pads on any PC Engine model and the USA Turbo DUO as well.

Haha. That was actually my biggest fear. Thart I would fry the port. But I just had to try :) It works flawlessly. Just as they reversed the pinout for pc engine/TG16 hucards, all they did was reverse the wire plug in for the joysticks. Heh.

Nice little mod! I'm glad it worked out for you, but to be on the safe side, you should use a multimeter to check the voltage coming out of the pins should you ever do this kind of stuff on another system. You don't wanna fry your system, do ya O_O

Oh, and if you're looking to make a neat-o adapters for TG 16 and Duo pads, go to Radio Shack and get DIN connectors and mini-DIN connectors.

Ehh, I don't need no stankin' multimeter...I work on luck brother! Haha...but seriously, I should be more cautious, but I take chances here and there. That's how I found out about dozens of console hacks. Sometimes you just have to take the chance. The DIn-Mini Din connector idea sounds good tho. I am definitely going to look into that.

I must correct myself here. The reverse mod (going from TG16 to PC Engine) will not work on every model PC Engine. I have tested it on a PC Engine original unit ok, but it does not work on the Core units for some reason. Seems NEC units are quite picky when it comes to any type of controller modification....especially with the taps. I am surprised this mod worked at all, but luckily it did, and I will eventually document it for the FAQ. Also, if you ever do a mod on the system and after turning it on you see a bunch of garbled white lines, turn it off quickly :) No, I didn't fry anything :)
