Did anyone pick this up yet besides me?
For those that have played the original, 2 is the tip of the iceberg. The coolness factor and tight gameplay have been ramped-up to a whole new level. (Both playable characters have weapon differences and can be swapped out anytime after completing a certain part of the game.) Plus, the element of suprise is strong as ever. S&P did it good, especially with the last stage being a fully-controllable side-scroller, but this is a whole other beast.
Treasure still has it in them! :D

I'm definately gonna pick it up in the next couple of months... I do wanna finish up Mario Galaxy 2 first though.

I only played the original on the Wii VC and found the control to suck.
Does #2 control well?

Which control setup did you use? I've only played the actual N64 cart and it plays just fine.
(Treasure literally MADE the game for the N64's controller.)
Given that, S&P2 is even smoother than the original. All you do is point at what you want to shoot and move around with the control stick. Both selectable characters have some cool weapon variations too.

I really want to play this, but I'm already so backlogged on games that this one is going to have to wait. Hopefully it will come down in price and not just disappear.
Like Kyle15 said, the original REALLY needed an actual N64 controller to play right. The Classic controller on the Wii sort of works, but it makes the game much harder than it should be.

The control is excellent on the Wii. Almost a perfect fit for this type of game. The initial reviews seem quite positive too.

But, probably like every other game for the Wii that I personaly appreciate, it probably won't sell well.

Not to be a whiner, but it's the price point that is keeping me from buying this one right away. Too soon after Mario Galaxy 2 to justify. Unfortunately, it's also a Nintendo published game, so that will probably never change. Argh. I'm sure I'll eventually pony up the $50 since I loved the first one, but it's going to have to wait a bit longer.
I honestly think I'm getting Deathsmiles first because I'd rather support that at full price to make a statement (and you can get the LE for the standard price of S&P).

My plan exactly, and I still don't own a 360 yet.
I'll get S&P2 from Amazon sooner than planned if I ever catch it being offered with a gift cert.
About the controls of the first game on VC... Isn't there a N64 to GC adapter? I think I've seen them online... I might just be misremembering though. I play the game with the GC controller, it took some configuring and some moon-speak trail and error in the options menu to get it done, but it works much better now that the default by my experience.

If length is a factor, I can confirm that S&P2 is VERY long as far as shooters are concerned. I'm at what, the 2:30 mark already with only the final stage to go? The first one takes about an hour and twenty minutes, but this is definitely longer.

How does controller configuration work for the GC controller? I've recommended the original to a friend of mine who's a tad picky. He enjoys stuff like this, but throws it down when difficulty or controller issues arise.

Since the option screen is all in Japanese text, you just change stuff until you find what options do stuff to the controls and what options do other stuff, then you find the setting mixture where you play the easiest from there. Took me a while. If you can read it, it's surely much easier.

Length definitely isn't the problem here! It's not a value thing. It's more of a "I just paid Nintendo $50, I just can't give them any more (in the short term)" thing. I also still hold a bit of a grudge against them for leaving the actual N64 version of first one (and Bakuretsu Muteki Bangaioh) in Japan. "Let's release Banjo & Donkey Kong collect-a-thons, and mountains of other tripe ad nauseum instead!" Thanks a lot.
Anyway, I'm glad to hear the game is as good as I'd hoped it would be. I will eventually buy it because I had/somewhat still have a thing for Treasure. I have real copies of every single one of the games they've made up until this point (in one region or another - mostly Japanese - even the frankly horrendous Rakugaki Showtime - that one inches closer and closer to the "SELL" pile). I'm sure the game really is absolutely fantastic. I just think I'm going to support Cave first this time. (We need Futari damnit!)
All of that said, I also have to admit that I still get a bit miffed paying $50 for glorified GameCube software. It's not a argument against the Wii in any real way; I just get that bad taste in my mouth. I'm not a HD/graphics whore either. It's just a peeve.

Really? I thought Nintendo translated the menus save for subtitles. I know katakana, so that wasn't an issue for me (or others that know it)
Kind of an odd decision on their part.

Glad you'll be picking it up. And, as far as graphics are concerned, this game is nowhere near glorified GC software. (if S&P2 is the game you're referring to)
Screenshots and old previews simply do not do the game justice. Quite a bit of stuff is on screen all at once and the draw-distance is huge; not to mention the texture work on bigger enemies.
As for the character models, they look to have been purposely made the way that they look. Nothing high-res either. My only guess is that Treasure wanted the models to look somewhat close to the way they rendered those in the original without using the usual textured-polygons. The enemies are quite decked-out, which was also the case in S&P.
