Amazing. Simply amazing. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CikUGpUpj-A)

A person from Devster (http://devster.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=dev&action=display&thread=613) managed to successfully port a mapper-less game, Super Mario Bros., to the Mega Drive, just running the audio straight through the system with the standard audio SMPS.

Here's for hoping for the MMC mapper for Super Mario Bros. 3 and SMB3 to be converted.

Sounds like SMB played on a church organ

The pallette is a bit off in terms of night backgrounds and red tones, but it's not really noticeable during gameplay. Also, got to love the invincibility song. Super Mario Church, anyone?

Only question I have, can we put it on a cart and slap this in a Genny case?

Ask for the video, the music needs more of a synth sound, other than that, looks like an interesting port.

A link would be good, one devoid of Scanners too.

Otherwise, this is a great acheivement. At least, I'm quite impressed.

Pretty cool, I wouldn't mind playing it. To play it on a Genesis you would need the rom and a ROM cart like the Neo Myth cart.

Hope? Better start praying morning, noon, and night. 'Cause it'll probably be a mildly chilly day in hell, before that happens.

Also, 'took long enough for someone to post about this over here.

I saw it this morning, but three hours and four miles of walking skewered the memory. Turns out they have nearly pinpointed the problem. (http://devster.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=dev&thread=613&page=2#6016)

Also, they're working on palette tweaks (http://forums.sonicretro.org/index.php?s=&showtopic=21613&view=findpost&p=475351), so that's a plus.

Only fitting music is the underwater theme- which is really cool.

I've taking a liking to the invincibility song, personally. Seems like the trumpeting used with a short bass guitar part really fits the Genesis sound style.

EDIT They're getting on fixing the problems with the VDP on real hardware. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R1FC5kSnhjg)

I think I just caused a disruption in the space/time continuum...

I played this MD Super Mario Brothers...
on my Genesis Emulator...
that runs on my DSI XL...

Seems as wrong as calling someone's cell phone from yours when you are standing right next to them...

Either way, thought it would be fun to try!

Mairtrus released a new version:

Version 1.4.1 released!! Click HERE (http://www.fileden.com/files/2007/11/30/1616239//MULS_1.4.1.BIN) for download it.
Changes since the last version:
- The pallete was replaced by a one more accurated. INFINITE thanks to localh for that.
- Some minor bugs around the whole code where fixed. Credits to Chilly Willy for some of them.
- The PPU emulation code was rearranged, so now (plus some minor things in some parts of the code) it SHOULD works on real hardware whitout graphical glitched and other shit. HUGE thanks to tascoDLX for ALL that.
- A small error in the musics was fixed (the D4 and D#4 notes was using the D4 frequency). Thanks to Bibin who reminds me to fix this.
- According to Sik (he said it first...), now in main screen the number of players is selected with the Up/Down buttons. Now the A and C buttons does the same function. Plus, the joypads are initilized properly, so now the joypad 2 works in Fusion (an I guess in real hardware too)
- The checksum routine now is gone (as you hear, space pirates), since it took less time hack it than it tooks to me create it.
- The new cheats are(always before the tittle screen): press "A" for enable the world selection cheat; press "Up" for set the screen in Interlace mode (as localh requested).

Enjoy it!!

Decided to give this a try and see if the minus world is in it, sadly the game crashes right after the world and lives display screen is shown.

LocalH
07-11-2010, 05:42 AM
Yeah, the minus world (or world 36 as it would be "correctly" called) is highly dependent on the memory layout, since it reads out-of-bounds data to produce the effect that it does. Even the FDS version of SMB1 has a different minus world, and were it possible to access on VS SMB (should try to hack it sometime to make it possible), it'd probably be different there too. To handle the minus world as the NES version did, Mairtrus would have to specifically check for world 36, and set up the level data such that it loads 2-2 and loops back to the beginning. I might bring that up to him for a future release.

Edit: Wait, did you try this on the original version, or the updated version I just posted about? I ask because on another forum, there is a report that the minus world doesn't crash, but it doesn't load the "proper" minus world, but one that consists of an underwater castle level that returns you to the title screen on completion.

Edit2: Yeah, I just tested it - you're still using the old version. The new version definitely has a working -1, but it's an underground version of 3-4, that upon completion acts like you've beat the game, setting hard mode and giving you the B-button world select on the title screen (exactly like the FDS version when you beat -3).

This new version is better, but to be quite honest the sky tone really does not work in the sense of being able to look at it. It's closer to the NES, but it's still slightly off, not dark enough. Also, the brown tones are suitable. Not accurate, but suitable.

The colors are still slightly off, the sound is way off (some sound effects like the fireball are perfect). Great port otherwise.

LocalH
07-11-2010, 03:17 PM
Well, the Genesis can't accurately generate the exact colors that the NES can, due to its 9-bit RGB. Sometimes one step on the other side of the fairly accurate 24-bit RGB value (generated with Nestopia) is even further off. I tried my best, the only colors that really suffered were the pastels (but I don't think SMB uses them, I just converted the entire NES palette because he does include CRAM values for them all).

Between the first release and the newer ones? Yeah, that's thanks to me, I sent Mairtrus a new palette to use that is much closer to the NES.

This will happen sooner or later. There is already a pirate Genesis port of one of the other Super Mario games. I have seen actual carts, they call it "Super Mario 4". Never played it though.

There's two different pirates- Super Mario World and Super Mario World 64.

From your post, I take it you're discussing the halfway decent port of Super Mario World to the Genesis, under the name "SMW64"?

I've also seen a Super Mario Bros. 2 genesis game, but I only have the Super Mario World game (great game in my opinion), and Wario Land 3 Genesis games.

Creator of Super Mario Bros?

I don't have contact info, but I did track down a photo of him. I wouldn't try to contact him. He looks a little crazy.

I was thinking the same thing. Don't get me wrong, I like seeing this kind of stuff(even have a few ideas myself on the backburner), and I can understand asking permission out of respect for the hard work they're putting in, but it's sort of like asking a pirate for permission to reproduce 'their' 500 in 1 carts.

Yeah, it's just a courtesy thing. I just think it would be a dick move for me to do a run of reproductions from their hard work, regardless of whether they coded the original or not, if I didn't ask for permission first.

I sent the guy an email through the one listed in his account on those forums, hopefully he supports the idea so I can provide these to people.

I never cared for the Genesis color palette, but this actually looks good. It's vibrant...

Sounds terrible though. There are examples of good audio on Genesis, but this is absolutely not one of them.

So if someone's ported SMB to Genesis, when can we expect Mario 64 on Saturn?

smb to gen is an upgrade, sm64 to saturn would be a downgrade, harder to do. It might be possible, I do like super mario world for nes with all its flaws, though it's not an exact port.

It would be a good idea to talk to him directly just to find out if he plans to update it further. It would suck to make a cart and then have a new version of the ROM come out right afterwards.
