View Full Version : Wiiware Collectors?

Anybody else collect Wii Shop Channel stuff? As for me, I have about 30 or so games on my Wii (a lot of Wiiware). The beauty of these things is that you can buy them for so much less than the real thing- Bonk's Big Adventure is only 6 dollars on the shop channel whereas an actual HuCard will run you at least a few hundred due to rarity. Wiiware is also very respectable- while some games are sickeningly overpriced, there are a lot of wonderful indie developers (like Shinen, the guys who did Jett Rocket) who display a lot of talent and creativity in their titles. It seems at some points these developers are even better than the big N themselves- while Nintendo is taking the easy route by making expansion packs *cough* sequels (such as SMG 2- great game but fuck paying the fifty dollars for it), these guys are coming up with brilliant ideas and also reviving older franchises to appeal to hardcore players.
Doing Wiiware is also, in my opinion, a great way to make your Wii much more valuable in the years to come. Once the shop channel shuts down (It most likely will- other programs in the past such as the Sega Channel went away after a few years), it's going to be next to impossible to find those games unless someone figures out how to hack and reopen the channel again. With this prediction- my Wii is already going to be worth plenty (30 or so games= about 8 wii cards= over 100 dollars in downloads).

Yeah, once they figure out how to grade Wii VC content, we're going to live like kings. LIKE KINGS!

All my Wiiware games are sealed, slabbed, and graded. It's the only way that those games will retain value.

Not so much VC as Wiiware. The VC stuff is always available in actual form- but as for Wiiware you're not gonna see any of it after the channel shuts down.

Dude, you're wasting your money if you are buying those with the expectation of your Wii being more valuable in the future. I hope you are buying them to play first and foremost...
Look at completed sales for Wiis on eBay. The white console bundles bounce in the $120 range all day long no matter how many downloaded games are on them. There is absolutely no market for a system with downloaded games that match your tastes. Every person is unique and will want their own.

I play them, of course and really don't expect my Wii to be too valuable. It's just easier and more affordable to get those on my budget, plus they can be better than having to spend 50 dollars for a full Wii game.

Well, except Ironclad. Wasn't the cart version unreleased until it was put on VC? Also, I do think a Wii that contains games like Mega Man 9 & 10, World of Goo, etc. will eventually be worth more than a Wii without those titles.

Yeah- it's the time that counts. And, my systems NEVER crap out on me either. In my entire history of playing games- the only system that broke down was my PSX. The only reason for that is because it was my first console EVER, so I had 0 experience with the games and probably overused it alot. I never banged it up or anything- but my Wii did fall over at one point and one of the doors (holding memory cards and GCN controllers) fell off. It sucks having Dyslexia where you can't handle stuff too well. Otherwise, it's doing fantastic.

Downloading games has made collecting obsolete.

Considering pirated versions of WiiWare games are both easy to obtain and indistinguishable from legitimately purchased copies, I highly doubt it. A person will be able to buy an empty Wii in 2020 and fill it up with a VC/WiiWare fullset in about an hour, offline servers or not. We're starting to see the beginning of that with the Xbox.

Once this current generation of consoles dies, I have a feeling that we'll see a lot of collection discs. Developers are better about keeping their source code around these days, so I doubt anything on WiiWare will die with the service.

Also, Nintendo doesn't allow you to migrate content from Wii to Wii.... so if it dies you're boned. You don't own those games, you're leasing them for the life of the console.

I'm under the impression that if you link your Club Nintendo account to your Shop Channel account, you can get your stuff back if your Wii dies.

If you send your Wii in for service, and the motherboard needs to be replaced, then they might transfer your purchased content. Beyond that, though, I've always read that there is no method of transferring the licenses. It's essentially renting for the life of the hardware.
Thankfully, the only WiiWare titles I care about are MM9-10 and Blaster Master Overdrive. I can always rebuy MM9-10 on PSN, and Blaster Master wouldn't be a great loss.
Sony and Microsoft have the "ownership" concept down better.

Yeah they do. I actually sent them an email awhile back on this issue. I have many downloaded VC games and WiiWare games. They said if your Wii ever breaks you will be able to send in your Wii and they will switch it to a new one.
Having to mail a wii to nintendo to get downloadable content is fucking retarded though. There were several people that bought a new wii when it came out in black (i know, it sounds dumb as hell, but bear with me) and dealing with nintendo w/r/t their purchased dlc was like pulling teeth.
Its an incredibly inconvenient and poorly thought out system (though I guess offset by the fact that obtaining vc/wiiware other ways and putting it on the wii is very, very easy). Still shitty for the average consumer though.
