For some reason my slim PS2 just started to not spin up discs when you close the lid. You can open the lid then close it again and it won't attempt to scan or even spin the disc up. Anybody have an idea of whats wrong or how I can fix this?

That sounds like a faulty laser. I repaired one of those the other month; switched the laser out with another one and everything was back to normal.

How long have you had your Slim?

I've had it since September of 2005. Where did you buy the laser for your repair? I'm willing to buy one and put it in just to see if it would fix it.

I was gonna say laser too but I wasn't sure. But yeah if the laser can't read the disc or know that it's there, it won't tell the motor to spin up. The laser is sort of what commands the motor when to spin, and at what speed. This is how most cd based consoles are anyways.

No guarantee that it's going to fix it but here ya go:

So on and so forth. You need to figure out which model you have, it should show it on the serial label somewhere. Once you figure that out just do a search for "ps2 laser (and then the model #), and you should find what you need.

I'd try to get the one that's got the whole sled assembly as it may be easier to replace that way. It looks like the lasers alone are pretty cheap too though.

If you get it and it didn't work don't blame me, I'm just trying to help, not saying that's what the issue is or not, but like I said oftentimes it's the laser that tells when the motor needs to spin.

Thanks for the help Oldskool, now to just get some extra cash to buy the parts.

Also, do your best to avoid buying a cheap, Chinese refurbished laser. I've purchased a few of them in the past and usually have a 50% failure rate within a week (if it doesn't fail right after it's installed).

Unless you have nimble hands and patience, you'll want to buy the whole deck as Oldskool mentioned. It's easier and faster to replace the deck anyway.

I would look at the lid switch first (assuming the PSTwo has one) before replacing the whole laser assembly.

You know I never even thought about the lid switch. The Slim PS2 I believe has like 2 lid switches. I'll definitely check that out first now that you mentioned it izarate.
