View Full Version : How does this make you feel?

OK, so this is probably old news to the community, but new to me. I was wondering what everyones thoughts were on this.

A friend of mine has a Wii and he's put just about every NES, SNES and all n64 games on a microsd card. He can now play them on his Wii. That's F****** awesome. But, it got me thinking...

I have an N64, NES, SNES, PS1 (among other systems) taking up lots of space near my tv. I also have carts and whatnot takin up even more space. Is there something wrong about doing putting a lot of games on a microsd? I mean, yea, I like having all that stuff, but it kind of feels wrong to have so much awesomness on one tiny sdcard. And messed up.

To me, playing a game like FF7 has to be on the PS1 with the non dual shock controller because thats how I remember playing the game. Im not interested in downloading it on PS3.

So, while it is cool that the Wii can do that and he has games that Im saving to buy, I still wouldn't enjoy them as much as if it were the original.

Anyone think this is wrong? or awesome?

Well I do Agree Emulation Is great for a while But because you are not playing on the original hardware it looses some of the magic at least to me.

I also i hate configuring all the stuff and i would rather play on my Tube TV on the system with no setup.

I feel that its fine if you dont own the game yet and plan on buying it soon but if you really like it you should already own it.

I quit emulation all together and the only time i really liked it was on the PSP. But thats because of the portability of course.

Last night I was playing Baseball Stars on my netbook, using a Playstation controller. My NES was sitting 5 feet away.

I guess I have no qualms about emulation.

Meh, emulation has been around for a long time now and there's still plenty of us collectors. So let's not go into the whole "Emulation ruins collecting" argument because it simply isn't true.

As a college student, I used to emulate some SNES classics that I never played because I was a NES -> Genesis -> N64 kid. It allowed me to experience games like LttP and FF2/3 on a college income (which is basically zero).

I appreciate what emulation offers, but I find it only suitable for games like RPGs which are basically "Press A over and over" quests. For more fast paced action games that require dexterous jumping / shooting skills (platformers), playing on a keyboard sucks ass. These games should always be played on the original hardware.

I'm surprised how few people know that you can buy any old USB PC controller and it'll work on emulators. There are some really good USB gamepads out there.

I agree with this, and have, for many years. This is also in part due to emulation not being as accurate, however.

I did buy a SNES USB Pad when I played LttP. And I'll be first to tell you that it is a huge piece of Chinese knockoff shit and feels like crap compared to a regular SNES controller. And if you want to pay the $20-$30 for a "good one", you might as well pay $10 more and get an actual system to play on a larger screen.

Buy from reputable brands, like Logitech, Saitek, or Thrustmaster. Problem solved. A good 10-button pad without analog sticks only costs $10. Analog, $20. Plus, when you spend $10 less for a USB controller rather than a system, it works for just about every emulated system on PC.

I am, by no means, in favor of emulation, but the lack of knowledge that plagues it does bother me.

Also a bazillion PS2 > USB adapters can be had for < $6 shipped (Dealextreme, etc)

PS2 + PC + emulation works great.

I use an original PS1 controller minus the analog to travel (smaller and lighter) and I play my emu stuff on my netbook. Works like a hotdamn.

Analog on PS1/PS2 usually works on these things too. Heck I bought a bunch of 2 player ones just to have them around off Dealextreme.com awhile back

So, you hate modern memory formats and want to go back to Zip disks or do you hate how memory cards are big enough to hold hundreds of games, something people only dreamed about a decade ago?

When it comes to emulation the only time I use it is for cheating or hacking the game to do something that can't be normally done like adding new levels or modifying certain aspects of game play. Original hardware has an amazing feel and essence to it that can't be emulated perfectly ever. Certain little things always seem to slip emulation that can only be achieved on original hardware.

The problem I have w/ emulation is mostly the same problem I have with collecting: You get so many games that you just don't even know what to play anymore. You don't stop and enjoy one game, and if a game doesn't immediately grab you, you just move on to another one. It basically creates ADD.

I have nothing against emulation but I don't use it other than to check out old games I looking to buy. Mainly Japanese games that I never heard of so that I don't end up buying an RPG or some other text heavy game.

does the wii need to be moded to run those roms of the memory card?

Homebrew if perfectly fine on your wii as long as you own those games. Hell, it's the ONLY way I know of to play NES games in S-video so that alone makes it worth it. Very simple to do too. I've got my entire nes, snes, & sega genesis collection on my wii. And yes, your wii would have to be modded to do this.

It's all perfectly fine, for personal use.

People that try to make money off of roms and hardware/software exploits (unless they labored for it themselves) are teh suck.

May I recommend the very most excellent Paradox of Choice talk (http://www.ted.com/talks/barry_schwartz_on_the_paradox_of_choice.html)? Featuring the apolitical true secret to happiness!

And yes, your wii would have to be modded to do this. You can still soft-mod it, right? I can't imagine Nintendo is still fighting the hackers and winning.

Well, you can use the original controller when you emulate a game on a PC. However, I agree that nothing beats the real thing.

Only let yourself play one or two games till you beat them. That should work. :)

Yes, but it's just a software mod. It's not that hard either, unless Nintendo patched up the holes.

Paradox of Choice... Poor us! LOL

Just play a freakin' game or go outside and cut the lawn. Or say screw both and take a nap or read a book even.

I have a problem with this because I use the PSP to emulate all my games from NES to the PSX. I usually play the same games a lot, but I'll end up forcing myself to play a different game once and awhile and stick to that game until I finish.

Haven't read the whole thread, but my reply is "to each his own."

I have a softmodded XBox with a 250 gig hdd that can play virtually (keyword) any older game. I also have just about every system hooked up. Really. All of them.

I'm a purist from an experience standpoint. I like the games on the original systems. Flash carts are greats thing that ever happened for retro games to me personally.

Emulation preserves the software and allows the masses access, but nothing beat s the real thing (even via flash memory).
