Can anyone explain this? I just saw it on eBay and it's running up to prices as high as $60. Was this undershipped? High demand for a good game? What's the deal here?

Quick answer: Short print run based on the overprinting of DQIV.

Anyway, this has already been covered in several threads. I think you'll find this helpful:

There was a low print because of the Dragon Quest 4 sales. Everyone should know by now that Nintendo doesn't fuck around when it comes to money. If it sells bad or it's not new, they're not going to support it any longer.

*edit*

heybtbm beat me to it.

I should have a Sealed copy but thanks to Gamestop I don't, I happened to buy the last copy of the game the Gamestop had back when it was new so i got the case they used to display and the opened one it still has the sticker seal Gamestop put on it but that is probably worthless and a price sticker on the case

Considering the 30+ hours of gameplay, it is definitely worth the $60. Think about it, when the Dragon Warrior games came out on the NES some 20 years ago, they cost more than this.

Except for the first one which you could have also received for free during a promotion Nintendo Power was running.

It's easily one of the top three Dragon Quest games and it had a really low print run. I'm hoping Nintendo prints off some more to sell along with DQ9's release this month, but it's a long shot.

Totally worth paying $50 bucks for it. Watch out for Chinese bootlegs on eBay, though.
