I recently picked up two multicarts for gameboy. They will boot up and get past the "Gameboy" screen when you turn on the game boy but then will either not work at all or go to a non functioning game select screen. They usually crash after that.

Does the Gameboy Color have a lockout chip of sorts preventing me from playing these games, or is just coincidence that I bought two multicarts on separate occasions and both do not work?

The Game Boy has no lock-out. It's all a coincidence, man.

Well, the GBC does have slightly different hardware than the GB, so it's not inconceivable that they might work on an original GB, right?

My dad bought a couple GBA multicards when he was in Thailand on business. The boxes are shinier than a holographic slap bracelet from 1992!

I have a bunch of GB multis that all work on my GBA. I don't have a color to test them on but I can't imagine they'd work on GBs and GBAs but not on GBCs.

Some multicarts and unlicensed games can have problems with newer Game Boys - there's no lockout chip in any of them, but sometimes older carts employ mono-GB specific hardware trickery that doesn't work properly on GBC/As. Sachen's old 4-in-1s for example won't boot on a Color or newer.
