View Full Version : Do you find it more fun to play older/classic games with friends?

Sure, they invoke nostalgia either way, but for some reason it's almost more fun to revisit the classics with a friend. For example, me and a friend played through Earth Worm Jim together yesterday. Every time one died, we'd hand the controller over. I haven't played earthworm Jim in years, and while it would be a trip down memory lane with or without my bud, him ebbing there made it all the more better. Playing through it together brought up stories from that game as well as others. I haven't been able to sit and play that game by myself for a while now. Whenever I tried, I just said "eh, who cares?" and stopped after a level or two(not saying it's a bad fame, quite the contrary!!!).
There are certain games I can revisit alone anytime, and others, such as this, that I'd just prefer to do with a friend. What about you? Do you prefer revisiting the classic alone, with friends, or does it depend?

Playing games with friends/buddies is much more fun for me. That is why I love bringing out the Atari VCS, soooooo many great two player games(ex: maze craze, slot racers, indy 500, Falldown, etc). Newer games seem to take too much time to get into the game.

Same here, I love playing playing classic games with my friends. It's even more fun when I pull out some game or system that they never played before.

Goldeneye and Mario Party are classic games now? Oh.
Yes I think it's SO much more fun. Especially if your friend is about the same age as you. They see your collection and get all excited like "MAN! Contra! I remember that, hey Blaster Master! Rygar! Wow let's pop one in!" - haha.
Also, it's just nice to team up on a game, especially something two player like Streets of Rage or Battletoads.

I think for alot of people it depends on how you and your friends grew up. Me personally, most of my friends weren't huge gamers and we'd play sports outside quite a bit. I know when I went inside I played games until I was blue in the face, I dunno about them. My gamer friends were really into RPGs and not much else so it made it hard to play anything together in person (although watching RPGs back then was more fun than it is today lol).
What I do now is play the classics with my girlfriend, who didn't play games when she was younger but still loves them. We've gone through a ton of both old and new games in the span of a few years and while I always try to convey the feeling I get from playing them, I know it'll never be the same for her which sucks, but we still have fun. There are many times some days where I'll walk in and a game will be paused when she tells me "this is a hard part" and I have to get her to the end of a level in Mario or something like that.
I can say though hypothetically that if they had any SNES classics on the Xbox Live Arcade with online multiplayer, be it co-op or whatever, I'd play them with friends much more.

100%, yes. For me thats usually the only time I do play classic games. Me and my friend played NBA Jam for Genesis not long ago and had a blast. I would never just play it by myself. And then all the great n64 games, they are a blast getting together and playing.

It's kinda sad that I can't find anyone to play old games with nowadays.
I've tried too, every now and then when a friend comes by I'll say "Hey! Battletoads, you and me! Come on!"
....Hm, maybe that's a poor choice of game.

Super Mario Kart for the SNES still gets taken out every once in a while when one of my friends or my sister gets a hankering for it. I pretty much never play it unless they want to.
Sometimes Duck Hunt as well, or the Pong/Tennis that came on my Atari plug-n-play two-paddle set.
And the N64 is loaded with games that I'll break out every now and then just for friends.

No. I hate playing with others. All of my friends suck at Contra and get mad when I kill them in the waterfall stage because I go too fast and the scrolling kills them. I don't got time to wait around while they fail to jump.
and then theres Jackal.
Playing it with a n00b friend is just a giant disaster.
Then we play Cyberball, I destroy them.... and some robot baseball game that literally made a friend throw the nes controller, get his car, and recklessly drive home in anger.
The only 2 player game I can play with someone else is Gauntlet and I usually end up using them as a meat shield while I grab all the loot with the Elf, lol. :pimp:

Interesting.
I enjoy a good two or four player game every now and then.

I had some friends over the other day that I hadn't seen in about ten years and we played some games on my Neo Geo AES. They have heard of the Neo but never actually saw one before. We had a great time passing the controller around playing Samurai Spirits, Cyber-Lip, and Crossed Swords.

I do too. Noone else does because I always beat the shit out of them in Street Fighter, etc.
when you go like 74 rounds undefeated with Chun Li, noone wants to play again.
\\^_^/
we don't play Mario party and crap because we play real board games. like arkham horror and titan!
