We have a search function here, you know. Hey look, this thread even has the same terrible subject line. (http://www.digitpress.com/forum/showthread.php?t=51197)

You don't have to be a douche-bag about it. Is it so terrible to bring up a topic that is over 5 years old? Just because its old to you does that mean no one else can talk about it now? If he had searched for that topic and posted in it I suppose you would have complained about him bumping such an old topic. Maybe you should spend your time at a forum that doesn't allow new members who ask questions that the old users know the answers to so they dont have to bother reading them and posting about how annoyed they are with them.

Dude, get the sand out of your vag. I don't see how pointing out that there's a fully functional search feature (while posting the results) is being a douchebag. People bump old topics all the time here and it's welcomed if there's a reason. I do like your strawman argument against that though.

I wouldn't call the search fully functional :|

The only thing that doesn't work right are three-letter inputs, and everyone should know about the google workaround by now for that. I use search all the time and it's fine.

So you dont see this- "Hey look, this thread even has the same terrible subject line." as being condescending (i.e. douche-bag)?

The Treamcast is an unauthorized portable Dreamcast clone from China. The screen is a modified PlayStation screen manufactured onto a miniaturized Dreamcast body. The Treamcast reads CD-Rs and plays MP3s and Video CDs with special software.
Because of its modified firmware, the Treamcast can play all international games. Sega accused the company of copyright violations and was able to halt sales through various websites.
Despite its origins in Hong Kong, the Treamcast houses an American power supply. It accepts official Dreamcast controllers and third party controllers. Note that several versions of the Treamcast exist.

Hope that helps!

If I remember correctly, they took original Dreamcasts and hacked them into these clones. The System was also sold with an official controller.

Yes, supposedly original Dreamcast hardware was used, but the firmware and cases were modified. Of course, the screen was added, too.

Exactly what I was thinking. Someone like ryborg looking for an e-fight will probably bitch at me but really, if we start making every initial reply to a new topic a douchey response, then this place is no better than shitholes like GameFAQS and IGN.
It also looks like the question has been answered so good stuff, I was also curious about this. Thanks Rob.

Ok, I will say it wasn't the nicest way to put it, but he did a service by telling one of a useful tool. Treamcasts have been around for some time. I have thought of buying one on occasion. I know there's quite a few threads that have been done on these systems.

I never knew that defending one of the best posters from a glut of newly reg'ed summer vaca kids fresh out of the 7th grade constitutes looking for an e-fight, but surely you know best.

So when I'm here in October, will you admit you were just being argumentative for the hell of it?

Does anyone here actually have a Treamcast? Is it worth getting?

Something I always wondered: if the Treamcast is basically the Dreamcast but with a new/hacked/variant firmware, is it possible to take a regular Dreamcast unit and flash it with said firmware? If it has been done, what differents are there, if any?

Good question. Can you reflash or replace the firmware in a Dreamcast without using a modchip or something?

I imagine a business with resources could find a way.

I have read many great reviews on the Treamcast. Mind you most of them where from approximately when the system was first released and when the redesigned unit appeared. From what I understand the redesigned unit was also available in black and they had a wide screen screen.
If you get one, get the one without the wide screen.

That's rad. I didn't know a portable (pirate) DreamCast even existed.
There must be something about this time of year. A second thread almost got derailed in the same day.

You new members need to get in where you fit in (you know, as in the pecking order). Man.. noobs, no respect.
Back on topic. Funny, I was just talking with someone else about the Treamcast. Don't know much about it. I wonder if the PCB itself is actually taken straight from the DC, or if it's just the 'chips' (rejects/stolen/whatever).

I've heard that the entire bottom half is from an actual Dreamcast.

Seconded! I made the mistake of getting one with the wide screen and I would much rather have gotten the one with the regular 4:3 but it was bought for me actually -in- Hong Kong by well-intentioned in-laws, so I couldn't exactly give it back.
My AC adaptor for it -never- worked. The car adaptor for it worked, at first, and then didn't anymore.
I don't think it's an issue with the unit itself, just that the adaptors are crappy. Someday, when I care enough to do the research, I'll buy one of those multi adaptor kits and try to get it to work. At this point it's kinda pointless. I'm not crazy about the wide-screen format for the games; any VCDs I might try to watch on it are 4:3 will look all stretched; an iPod Touch does better job at displaying movies, is more portable and doesn't require the care and carrying of CDs.
Hmmm, so I guess the only reason to get it working is to prove it works when I try to sell the damn thing. Glad I built it up in here as such a great thing to get. Yay. Treamcast? Go Widescreen! ;)
kay, seriously? don't. If you can find one, go with the 4:3.

I see little reason for the Treamcast as, unless one travelled alot and was in situations in which a Dreamcast with a screen was useful, its not very. It's like the PlayStation One LCD screen. Good collectability and even useful in travel but the usefulness is diminished when its bought for the home. Maybe the Treamcast is best used at a collectable conversation starter.

This is an internet msg board, not the army. Relax.
I'm wondering if this would be a fun modding project, see if I can fit a DC into something like that. Make one with my own screen.

If your going to do something like that I'd go more of a Ben Heck style.
