Tried searching for an answer on this but couldn't find anything. Can the new slim 360 output audio through HDMI? I know it has an optical audio output, but I was wondering if I can ignore that and just run video & audio thru a single HDMI cable.

I'm currently using an old non-HDMI 360 and need to free up the component inputs on my receiver. So I figure I'd ask before buying a new slim.

Yes, due to the specifications of HDMI requiring audio output through the cable. Unless you have a audio system with HDMI in, it's not worth it. TV speakers just make it muddy or bad depending on the brand. That's why I just removed the plastic casing on my 360's AV cable so I could use the phono plugs alongside HDMI video. Doing that for an original model's AV cable saves money, unless they've modified the AV cable's design for the 360 Slim.

Thanks for the reply. I should be good then since I'm going to be running the Xbox HDMI thru a receiver. I only have 2 component & 2 optical audio inputs on my new receiver, so I'd like to upgrade to a HDMI Xbox so I can free-up the component slot for my PS2 or Xbox.

Just a reminder...HDMI is always video and audio. There is no other kind. You don't have to use the HDMI audio out, but it's always being transmitted along with the video signal.

With the new 360, you can output the audio through HDMI, RCA (via component cables or composite cables), or optical.

Thanks, that's what I thought. The only reason I ask is because when I was shopping for a new receiver a few years ago, some of the ones I looked at wouldn't process audio thru HDMI (so you needed an additional optical or digital coax cable). So I wasn't sure if certain consoles with HDMI did the same.
