Well i was going to trade in my ps3 phat 40 gb to my local game store and get the slim ps3 but the guys at the store actually talked me out of it saying the 40gb was made much more better and is more reliable. Is this true?

I would recommend a PS3 with a healthy diet and plenty of exercise. You dont want it to be slim or fat, but of average build.

PS3 Medium

But in all seriousness, the 160gb Fat ( Last ones made ) are the most stable with 40nm chips, 3rd generation Blu-Ray drives and the large fans.

I prefer the early units for full hardware based PS2 backwards compatibility and the ability to play Super Audio CDs. :)

Is SACD playback really that important of a feature? It's been at least 2 years since I purchased a retail audio cd and I've never even seen a SACD. Does anyone here own any?

I have two: the 30th Anniversary SACD Hybrid of Dark Side of the Moon and the deluxe edition two disc reissue of Nine Inch Nail's the Downward Spiral. I only bought the SACD Hybrid of Dark Side because it was the same price as the regular CD.

I don't actually have a SACD player or a 5.1 Surround Sound set up.

I do. :) So it's very useful to me. There's a good number of CD/SACD hybrid discs out there. Mostly remasters of classic rock titles, though I do own some more recent things like Nine Inch Nails 'Downward Spiral' in 5.1.

Even if you don't use it, realize the newer consoles are stripped down vs the older ones. I don't even think the newer PS3s play PS2 games at all.

The only feature that the Slims have over the original models is DTS HD support. I'm not an audiophile, so that doesn't matter to me much. Unless you're a hardcore audio guy, just look for a 20GB or 60GB. I love my 20GB to pieces.

I've got a 60GB and unless the slim gets BC then I won't. However, if the slim ever receives BC, then I'll immediately switch. I don't care about any of the features like SACD, the memory card slots, or the already removed Linux support.

I've been thinking I'll look into modifying the PS3 as I'd like to purchase the Yakuza PS3, which is unfortunately not backwards compatible, and replace all the parts in my 60GB into the Yakuza PS3. Basically a 60GB Yakuza PS3. I need to eventually upgrade my HDD as well.
