most importantly the ones with special chips in them Rockman X2 and Rockman X3 but the others too. I ask this because I heard that Nintendo implemented lockout chips in games really late. And my new goal in classic game collecting is to get all Rockman games for SFC and all American Mega Man Games for SNES though that doesnt belong on this board.

AFAIK you just need to pull the plastic tabs off the SNES that block you from inserting the cart, no other lockout need be overcome.

I know about the tabs, I was reading this website
http://www.risingstuff.com/step-by-step-instructions-to-mod-your-super-nintendo-to-play-super-famicom-games/
and it says:
Once you have those two tabs broken off you can start playing all the Super Famicom games you like. Well… not quite. Later games (released around 1996) might have a lockout chip still. Known games that will not work are Super Mario RPG and Kirby Super Star. The solution? … Play the North American release!

The SNES only has two regions: NTSC and PAL (three if you count SECAM). Japan is NTSC. US is NTSC.

Yes, the Rockmans will play fine.

From what I heard, later games will only cease to work if the SNES has been modded with a chip to bypass the PAL/NTSC lockout. However, this applies to games of the same region as the system as well. As far as I know, later JP games with special chips work on US systems with the tabs removed and no modifications to the inner hardware.

If I'm remembering correctly the SNES lockout in games just checks the hertz and video format. So for example a Japanese SNES game would check for 60 hertz NTSC which is the same as the US. If I'm wrong about that being how the lockout works somebody correct me please.

all games from japan will work fine on any US system as long as you remove the tabs, you have nothing to worry about!

Was there even a way to identify between US or Japan systems, at all? I've never heard of such a bit flag or anything.

If you are a serious collector buy a super famicom, the prices are great and the system has a great look. :whip:

No. There's only a register for the video signal.

Another confirmation. All SFC games work on NTSC SNES.
And I've tried a good sample: Yoshi's Island (Super FX2), Rockman X2 (C4), Jikkyou! Oshaberi Parodius (SA-1) and Fire Emblem: Trachia 776 (Nintendo Power cart).

Whoever wrote that is full of shit. I was at skaar's place and was playing some Japanese games with the SA-1 chip in it. There is no physical difference in the hardware between the US SNES and a SFC.
