I was just curious as to which source port you use for the old Doom games (ultimate doom...etc).
I prefer GZDoom and Skulltag.

I personally use zDoom, with the Boom-based port when running it through Homebrew Channel off of my Wii. Skulltag really doesn't appeal to me, as what I need is something I can just start up Doom for a few quick runs through the game instead of having to decide whether I want to go online a lot and then both have to find people to go up against and then have to decide which mode to play. I'm not much of an online gaming person, so all I need is something to launch me quickly into single player mode.

Not too sure if this belongs here, but I recall playing a Doom variation (one still needed the original WAD's to play) that let the person play the game using new textures at much higher resolution. One could even import new remade music to the games as well.
It kicked ass, but unfortunately, I have no idea what it was called.

Searched it up, the name appears to be the simple sounding "Doom Remake."
Cool update for game, extremely simple name.
Looks awesome, but I found it annoying they used the sounds used in PSX Doom and Doom 64. To me, they don't have the same "thrill-kill" type of sound as the original sounds. Nevertheless, looks good, and it looks like it plays excellently.

I use ZDoom, GZDoom and occasionally Skulltag. I download a lot of TC's and levels and some will work in one and not the other. I recently messed around with Risen3D but I didn't like the 3D models and for some reason it wouldn't let me use my soundcards midi option, it only lets you use some Roland sound card option that you can't change at all.

Then why not use GZDoom where the only differences I think are the floors are 3d and it has a darker lighting effect, which you can change easily change the option back to original.

I have the original wads and all that. Any recommendation on good WAD mods I should try?
Also, anyone use wolfendoom?

Knee-Deep in ZDoom (http://kdizd.drdteam.org/) is pretty awesome. It's basically a re-imagining of the first episode that takes advantage of all the added ZDoom scripting features. The levels are vaguely familiar but much more intricate; lots of added areas, monsters, weapons, and so it takes much longer to work your way through.
As for source port of choice, for me it's just plain old ZDoom. I've tried the Doomsday engine a few times, but the whole blurry lens-flarey thing never felt quite right to me for these games. Lately I've also been playing the original DOS versions of the games in DOSbox, for maximum nostalgia value - just little things, like the original intro demos, and minor MIDI rendering quirks in earlier versions of Doom that source ports don't replicate.

There's way too many good WAD's out there but here's the site I get all mine from http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/.

But the old Doom95 loader doesn't even let you use the mouse. The option is there but it's busted.

I agree it was pretty cool, especially with how big the made the levels and all the new enemies and whatnot.

General zDoom here. I messed around with a few different ones before settling on zDoom. It works well enough (although I wish Wolf3D TC would work better) and it's what I'll stick with for now.
Thanks for the link on KDIZD. Looks really nice.

I used gzDOOM for something or other that required it but I don't like free software fanatacism more than I like updates (which is not to say that zDOOM has had any notable updates in years, of course).
For a "classic" executable, the Windows '95 era launcher (I don't know if it's 16- or 32-bit, haha) probably would be my choice because I've already got that on disc (from the legendary Ultimate DOOM package).
Very easy to use zDOOM - I have a command line set up in a shortcut to start recording a game in Heretic on E3M1. It would be simpler with a console or menu options but I can't complain.
