The title says it all.
About 30 minutes ago, this longtime (relatively speaking) gamer/collector just beat Super Mario World for the first time on the SNES. Everyone and their Mom may have already completed this feat, but I still consider it an accomplishment (hey, I grew up with a Genesis alright?!)
I also realize this may be one of the few places I can say it publicly and not get strange looks, and I am reserved to being ok with that :)
I celebrate all this with a beer, cheers!

Congrats! Feels good when you finally beat a game after a long absence.

Good for you. After owning an NES since I was 8 years old, I finally beat Super Mario Bros. (the original) last year! I can't stand the game from 8-1 on, so it took a lot of effort, but I finally did it.
So I can relate. Congratulations!

If you didn't have a SNES before, you certainly can't blame yourself for not playing/beating the game.
It is a fun game though and now you have experienced all of it. Congratulations!

Come now, we need details. Did you actually finish off each castle, or did you just go through the Star Road? (Do you even know about the Star Road?)

This reminds me of the time (about 2 years ago) my friend and I sat down and played through Super Mario World three times (technically only like 2.5 times) in one night in order to get 100% or whatever it is on each Game on the title screen. He told me that he had heard it would change what Mario does on the title screen demo thing. It took forever. We did it on the NTSC version. It only works on the PAL version. Good times.

Congratulations! Never too late to beat a classic game for the first time.
Now! Go back and get all 96 exits!

I never owned a SNES so i never got to play it all the way through but i eventually got the gba version and wow that is a ridiculously long game when you get everything without any help.
Good job on completing the snes version hopefully I will do this soon also and as Jorpho said did you really get 100% or just a straight play through because for me at least I consider that easy :D lol

Congrats. Its really an awsome game. I barley finished it a few months back. I went all the way through, but I know I didnt find some of the secret passages and what not. That one stage where you have to do it in a certain time is really annoying!

This whole thread makes me nostalgic, since I played it when it first came out at the house of one of my best friends, and we spent so long on it.. Good times, good times.
Anyway, we were on opposite ends I see, so maybe I should do similiar with Sonic 1 sometime, as I just got that a bit ago.. I only got to play the later Sonic games at my friend's house way back in the day since I didn't have a Genesis and they lacked the first.

Congrats!
I remember how it took me around 14 YEARS to defeat Super Mario Brothers. Yup, the first one! :o
Super Mario World was an awesome game. I would love to play it again, but I need to replace the battery on the cart most likely.

It's never too late for such an awesome game, SMW is a timeless classic that can be enjoyed even now. Congrats!

I finished it a couple of years ago after ot playing for like 10 years. When it's done completelety it shows the little star on the side od the number of levels right?
Congrats! I still need to tackle this one myself.

Nicely done! I remember when me and my sister were little, she managed to beat Mario World before I did! I was so mad! LOL

Glad I could bring back the memories for you guys :)
As for the 100% thing, I just beat it straight through--no Star Road shennanigans though (I don't think?? I was using an old save from awhile back). Total completion will have to wait for another time though, I was just glad to see the ending screen after all these years.
I akin the experience to finishing a book that you've had on the shelf for awhlie. In a time when reading anything over an article for me (and alot of people I imagine) is something to champion, I felt this was celebration worthy, 100% or not :)
Thanks everyone for sharing it with me, now onward with the stories!

Well in a way the 100% is nice but its just so long if i go back and play it again it will most likely be a run like yours there is no way im doing all that ever again.
Im sure you will get to it eventually I still need to go and buy the game on snes haha

If I was going to replay the game again, I would use the GBA version with the color restoration hack (http://www.romhacking.net/hacks/470/). Remember, the GBA version tracks your Yoshi coins, adding to the challenge, as well as the differentiated Mario and Luigi from the SMAS release.

Congratulations. :) I too missed the experience of Super Mario World when it was new. I didn't get a SNES until 1993 or '94, and I went straight for the classics with Super Mario All-Stars. I missed out on just about all of the big SNES titles around then and prior, and I still haven't played through some really notable ones, like Zelda 3 and Super Metroid. So, similarly, I beat Super Mario World for the first time within the past few years. It's a great game, but I don't hold it in nearly as high regard as those with loads of nostalgia for it. I beat it 100% and still found it much too easy, and some of the design elements are a little out-of-place to me.
Also, anybody who would give funny looks for you beating it for the first time now is full of it. I think there are very few, if any, gamers that can claim to have beaten EVERY big-name game of the past. We've all missed something here and there.

I've never heard of that... what does he do that's different?
I'm not really sure what it does. I think it changes the enemies that are on the title screen or something. I tried to Google it and I can't really find anything on it. Anyone else have any information?

I have never heard of anything of the kind. The only change worth noting is that clearing all 96 exits results in the star next to the number, except in the original Japanese version.

This is what I managed to find:
From http://www.gamewinners.com/snes/SMarioWorld.htm
Hidden level:
Note: The following only is available in the PAL, European version of the game. Complete (and save) all the 96 levels on each one of the three memory files. The number "96" will be blue if you have an European version, otherwise three stars should appear beside them. Power off the SNES and turn it on again. Do not press any buttons and wait for the demo to play. It should be different. Mario dies and you will be able to play the title screen level. This is a shorter version of "Groovy", with no exit gate.Do we have any PAL gamers that care to verify this?

You overcame a childhood handicap of having a Genesis and accomplished something good.
I applaud this.

I've never beaten Sonic 2, 3 or Sonic & Knuckles. I should take your lead and beat those games now. I was a Nintendo fan during that time.

I would venture that those are all much more difficult games than SMW. Limited continues and no saves!

I'm going to have to cheat and use Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection because I DON'T have the time to beat them in one sitting. I can at least save whenever I want.

What RP20A3 posted is exactly what we were trying to do, when we beat all three games 100%. Unfortunately, like I said before, we did it on the NTSC version. I too would love if someone had a PAL version and felt like wasting a few hours beating the game three times, to tell us if this is true or not. :D

Congrats! Something ever gamer should have accomplished at least once (or ten times...).
I still vividly remember playing this to completion, starting on the SNES' release date. I remember being BLOWN AWAY by the audio on SMW.

Ya, I so remember the day my friend and I each got our SNESs. For some reason Nintendo decided to release in Canada weeks after the US launch, so we were forced to go to our local game shop and buy their imported ones. We couldn't wait weeks. It was worth the extra cash. It was the first console I bought with my own money and the bike ride home with the box on the handlebars was the longest bike ride of my life.
Funny, the thing I remember most was the echo in the first cave section. We were blown away by that sound.
/not as blown away as we were when we booted up Actraiser...but that's another topic.

I managed to finally beat Sonic 3 and Knuckles last year, with only two continues. Also, I still can't get all the stars on Super Mario 64 (can only make it to 112) and I can't get a perfect on SMW either (93 exits is the most I have been able to do), but I can easily get Sonic 2 perfect straight through.

For those of you still wondering about the PAL only bonus mentioned earlier; I asked on a European forum and the answer I got was no. The only difference is a blue number instead of a star. No changed demo. No playable demo. No magical portal leading from your TV to Dinosaur Land. Just a blue number, that's it.

For anyone wanting some fun with the attract mode at the title screen, Game Genie codes that let Mario float and such do affect it.
