We test and refurbish systems at my place of work and I've noticed that the cartridges being provided to the backroom staff may not be the best choice.

Ideally, we would use games that load fast and test every button/dpad/joystick for both controller ports. We don't bother testing the third and fourth N64 controller port.

I figure some of the smarter DP minds in here could point me in the right direction.

What we're currently using:

NES:
Super Mario Bros./Duck Hunt
Marble Madness

SNES:
Mario Kart
NBA Jam

N64:
GoldenEye
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater

Genesis:
Sunset Riders
Street Fighter: Championship Edition

Fighting Games always work well because each button usually does a different move and they typically let you get right into a exhibition match. Basically that applies to every system out there. Mortal Kombat and wwf games are some examples, I see you already use a couple fighting games for some systems.

NES I'd recommend Zelda II - I can get a feel for a controller pretty quick in that game for jump/stab/duck/etc. No up testing though...

SNES Bomberman is fun and easy to get into a game - plus you can test a few controllers at a time. D-Pad will get a thorough workout.

Genesis has a few fighters that require precision, Sonic alone will probably do for the three button games after a quick playthrough of the first level.

N64 run around in Mario 64 for awhile? I don't have much experience with the system.

I had a thread about this ages ago for SNES/NES and the question still interests me - thanks for starting another discussion :)

Kendo Rage for SNES has a Pad Test in the options menu that lets you test every controller button and the dpad.

I've got to point out that games which only use 4-directionals will not adequately test a d-pad or joystick. You have to be sure about the diagonal operation also.

I once purchased a Tekken 5 stick from gamestop (it was supposed to be new but was opened so who knows if someone abused it) Right away playing shmups, I noticed problems.
All 8 directions functioned on their own, but if the stick was down and then rolled to the down-left diagonal it would not register the diagonal ~ the ship would continue moving down.
So the moral of that story is always be sure to "roll" the stick or "circle" the d-pad in both clockwise and counter-clockwise directions to test it fully.

Miniature Golf/Arcade Golf for the Atari 2600 is an excellent choice for testing joysticks. Utilizes all 8 directions and the action button.

He only mentioned testing the console. Bomberman should do just fine.

Someone can correct me on this, but SNES only registers up/down/left/right and combinations of them, no? Isn't it a 4-way?

I see what you're saying about the diagonals. Maybe if someone can do Zangief's spinning piledriver on demand SF2 would work :D

Thanks for the responses guys.

Some of the games I already have but I'll do some hunting at CGE for the rest.
