PS2 Console doesn't detect PS2 Controller

This Smoke Colored PS2 Controller that I have doesn't get recognized in the PS2 when it is plugged in. The PS2 says to please plug in a controller. Is there a break in the cord? What do I do?

Try with another controller. If it works, then it's the old controller. If it does not work, its the controller port.

Break the console apart and check for any inconsistencies, like physical damage, rips, etc.

It's the Smoke Controller that is doing this. Every other functional controller works perfectly. What do I do to fix the smoke controller?
