View Full Version : Lack of Wii - DS connectivity?

Does anyone think this is a rather underused feature of Nintendo's platforms? Especially in comparison to GC - GBC connectivity.

GC - GBA connectivity was shown some strong support from Sega across multiple titles, Nintendo and Square Enix both released games that primarily focused on the feature.

I can think of 2 games off the top of my head that support Wii - DS connectivity and am a bit baffled why more games don't, especially considering that there are many more Wiis and DSs out there there was GCs and GBAs and that no extra cables are needed. It is something I would like to see more of!

With WarioWare DIY they're certainly testing the waters again.

Maybe the WiiWare/DSiWare stores are a factor in why it's not seen much. Why include modes on physical copies when you can just sell them via the Stores instead? Don't you need WarioWare DIY Showcase on Wii to connect WarioWare DIY (DS)?

Also, not too many people I know around here that had a GC and GBA went into the GC/GBA connectivity thing. In fact, I don't recall anyone around here other than us having all the crap required...

I've wondered this as well.

The Nintendo Channels makes use of it - you can DL demos and recommend DS games using connectivity.

I love connectivity, and wish it was supported more than it is right now. It really should be more supported than it is now. What actually supports it besides Pokemon Battle Revolution?

Ubisoft has a word game for the Wii that lets you input characters using the DS touchscreen...its name escapes me right now. Maboshi's Arcade for WiiWare also has some connectivity.

I agree though, it's really underused. such a cool feature, especially now that there are fewer barriers since it's wireless.

There's the music game 'Jam with the Band', which is a DS game and comes with a Wii Channel but I've never really looked into it.

It's even more odd considering it's been kind of built into Nintendo's marketing for a household to have a DS for every family member and the whole 'Social, playing together' theme it has going on.

It's possible that they're planning to do more with the 3DS... DS is not dead and out, but it's lifecycle is mostly past already.

I could definately see that. Even it's something as simple as "look at the new character you just created in 3D". I can't really think of any gameplay advantages but I'm sure they could think up some cool stuff.

The only GC-GBA game I've ever linked was Metroid Prime to unlock the original game on the GC. I sort of wish it was other way though. I'd probally actually play it if it was unlockable on the GBA.

Looks like there's another connectivity game coming out:

You can unlock the original Metroid on GBA through Zero Mission.

Youu mmean Nintendo is not supporting something that they probably made a big deal of a few years prior...

Two things to know about Nintendo.
1.) Their first party games are typically awesome
2.) They will release a bunch of accessories and hardware that they will support for the first 3 months and then completely ignore it after.

- Super Scope 6
- Game Boy camera + Printer
- N64 Expansion Pack
- N64 Mic
- N64 transfer pack (I think that was used for Pokemon Snap and involved Blockbuster video)
- GBA to Cube connection
- Cube Mic. Odama and I think a Mario Party game used it.
- DS mic
- DSi camera
- Wii "mic" thing that they were pushing with Animal Crossing and The Conduit
- Wii motion +

Most of those launched with a game and then pretty much disappeared after that.

- Oh yeah, forgot to mention the Power Glove

- and the E-Reader

In the case of the DSi camera, it was test marketing on existing hardware for the 3DS 3D camera... You know, to find out if people would even care about a camera being included on a handheld? If a 2D camera can keep the kids busy, then a 3D camera is going to be that much more.

I don't think you can even classify the DSi cameras or Motion+ with the rest since both are included when you buy the relevant system/controller (M+ comes standard with systems and controllers now).

I will give you that DSi cameras are somewhat unsupported (Photo Dojo aside...), but Motion+? Not hardly. Swap in ROB instead, being that it was standard and was dropped. Fits your argument and terms much better. Power Pad... Dance Aerobics wasn't exactly DDR.

Good gosh. I didn't even think about ROB and the Power Pad.

I still don't like the fact that the Motion+ is still an add on and not built into the controller by now. I'll give you the Motion+ in that it's more of an upgrade rather than a seperate accessory.

But I'll throw in the Bongos.

Coulda woulda shoulda. Nintendo did state that the M+ tech did not exist with in the time frame to be considered for the planned launch window. When exactly they found it and then decided to adopt it is a complete mystery to me. Taking their statement on face value, it is plausible.

Just keep this in mind about Motion+: It does come bundled now, and the remote was designed for added features like that before launch. Why retool remote production for built in functionality? What is there to gain? It would be a waste of time and money. And possibly confuse consumers where it's not even needed. That considered, it's handled well enough the way it is. If you really don't like dongles, well, that sounds like a very strange and unique personal problem. Having it built in would not change functionality.

How does this relate to connectivity? Hmm... Well, dongles have to connect to something after all. :D

Bongos! LOL I forgot one myself, probably more...
