Does anyone know where I can find a decent tutorial on installing a backlight on my GB advanced and other older GB systems?

Back in 2001-2002 before the SP was released, there was an "Afterburner kit" for the GBA that could be installed with a bit of soldering skill. In recent years, a method of frontlighting a Game Boy Color by cannibalising a GBASP (the first model, unfortunately not the AGS-101) was also devised. Here's a good tutorial I found

I have seen something similar done to a Neo geo pocket color as well.

I have a feeling there are DIY kits to add a light to the original DMG-Game Boy but I'm not entirely sure. If you really want an original Game Boy/Game Boy Pocket with a light, look for the Japan-only Game Boy Light.

Literally speaking, I think it is only possible to get a frontlight for these legacy systems, I don't think there are any backlit systems besides the AGS-101 system (I recommend this over any other single Game Boy)

I find this thread to be very interesting. I have an extra (crapped) GBA I would like to get a lite on and replace the scratched up screen altogether as I hate the feeling of the SP.

In regards to front lights they did make lights which attached to the gameboys through the link port they were called wormlights. Theres a store by my house that actually still sells new ones for the gameboy color

I've done a bit more research myself, and have found the site below and several recommendations. Just FYI, I contacted them and they have the backlights in stock. I'm going to attempt it on a gameboy pocket. I'll keep you posted!

I would like to note that the GBP one doesn't give awesome results - it is lit well, but the GBP kinda has low contrast and sucky motion blur to begin with, and the light exacerbates that. I would have to recommend turning the polarizing paper 90 degrees to invert the colors (and increase the contrast,) or go for the biversion mod

I seem to remember seeing a person on DeviantArt who made custom Gameboys with backlights and all kinds of other crap. I'll see if I can find the link.

A revised model was released after the launch of the DS, with a backlight instead of a frontlight. The result is a brightness that eclipses the first DS, comparable to perhaps a GB micro or DS lite. They are recognisable by the part no. AGS-101 but saw limited release outside of the USA.
I found one, quite amazingly, locally in Australia. It's a pearl blue but they were made in jet black and pink too.
