Starsoldier here to prove that I'm not a total hack when it comes to the Turbografx. So me and the other guy (Jason) list off the top 10 reasons why we still love the old but highly underrated Turbografx-16 here. Maybe you'll disagree.. maybe you'll disagree even more but here is the video anyway:

Hey starsoldier1! I loved your vid. I agree on your #1 reason why the Turbografx rules. Yes, there are many underrated games, but the cool thing is that us NEC fans kinda have them all to oursleves. ;)

You've got one more TurboGrafx 16/PC Engine nut here. Got 2 TurboGrafx 16s(one modded, the other stock), the TurboGrafx CD(that won't stop giving me problems), a PC Engine SuperGrafx and a PC Engine Duo-R(still looking for a TurboExpress or PC Engine GT, even though their capacitors fail a lot, but I can easily replace them). Got my first TurboGrafx 16 when I was 15(in 2007... yeah, I jumped on the TurboGrafx 16/PC Engine bandwagon VERY late, but I did that with practically every classic console I own aside from the NES), and I couldn't be more proud to own a TurboGrafx 16 until I got my RGB-modded(and I didn't even know it was RGB-modded until I tested the system! Not even the seller knew it was RGB-modded) PC Engine Duo-R.

I'm gonna have a look at that video now and give my opinion.

OPINION: Number 5 is the reason why I got a TurboGrafx 16 in the first place. I'm a HUGE fan of Shoot-em-Ups, and my all-time favorite Shoot-em-Up series saw 3 games released for the TurboGrafx 16. I'm talking about the Gradius series(YEAH!). Sadly, all the games were PC Engine exclusives, but at least I've got one of them(Gradius II on the PC Engine Super CD-ROM). I still need to import Gradius and Salamander, both of which were released on cartridge. At least I have R-Type(all versions except for the Japanese Part 2 on HuCard), Blazing Lazers/Gunhed, Super Star Soldier and numerous other games for my Shoot-em-Up fix on the TurboGrafx 16.

Number 2 is just awesome, although I DETEST the TurboGrafx CD add-on. Duo systems are a lot better, even though you need to replace the capacitors on the black Duos and the laser sometimes has a tendency to run off the track and get stuck, but that's not as bad as the HORRIBLE problem that plagues the TurboGrafx CD: a gear. There's this one gear that over time discolors and becomes fragile like most original-model Super NESes. On my TurboGrafx CD, it likes to get stuck and in turn prevents the laser from moving unless I fight with it for 15 minutes. Eventually, though, the gear will just disintegrate, and unlike the TurboDuo, you can't replace the gear. On the TurboDuo, you can easily put the laser back on its track, you can easily replace the capacitors, and you don't have to worry about a gear disintegrating. The ideal is a Japanese PC Engine Duo-R or PC Engine Duo-RX. You get both a standard PC Engine and a PC Engine CD-ROM with an integrated Super System Card all in one, and you don't have to worry about either of those systems failing on you because they rarely ever fail(unless the laser's been heavily used, but that's an easy fix). And if you want to be able to play every single PC Engine game out there, get a PC Engine SuperGrafx. You don't gain much(only 5 new games), but I just had to get a SuperGrafx because nearly every game released for the SuperGrafx is a Shoot-em-Up.

Its sad that its so underrated and obscure to alot of people

You wouldn't believe how many casual gamers I've run into that are of the "ooo I loved sega genesis, etc, etc" type, that look at you like O_o when you say Turbo Grafx-16.

Growing up, I had everything since my grandma worked at sears and basically was our sweet video game hookup.

I played the Sega the most up until I got the Turbo. Bonk 1 is more fun than Mario and Sonic ever were.

Turbografx is one of my all time favorites, but at this point I pretty much played all the titles I care about to death already umpteenth times. So I probably haven't played it in a decade+.

Also leaky capacitors.

Love the systems, but hate their ability to up and die, even in the proper storage environment.

The first games I had the opportunity to play were Bonk's Adv., Keith Courage in and Legendary Axe and they caused a very pleasant impact on me, from that moment on I became a fan of the console. Another friend had some games for the tg-16 that wanted to part with and I was willing to buy those games from him, among the games I bought from him are Splatterhouse, Alien Crush, Blazing Lasers, Double Dungeon, Dungeon Explorer, Psichosis and Dragon's Curse. I also loved the tg-16 as a shmups fan perspective as it has some serious top notch shmups, like the titles Ace mentioned or Air Zonk, I would like to mention others like Sinistron, Blazing Lasers, R-Type, Gates of Thunder, Lords of Thunder, Aero Blasters, Cyber Core and Dead Moon.

Magical Chase is also available for the Gameboy Color, but it was only released in Japan. It's still expensive, though not as much as the Turbografx version. I'm not sure why this isn't listed in the rarity guide.

I've heard that before. Duo's have bad capacitors or something of the sort. The electronics are bad. Still, my duo hasn't died on me yet.

Thanks for watching there! Blazing Lazers was the original game that sold me on the system and it's hard to find a bad shooter for the machine (other then Deep Blue). I was lucky and spend the huge amount of cash on the original Turbo CD and I waited and got the Duo in 1993.

I think the problem was with the Turbo Express. I don't hear too many people having any issues with the Duo.

The TurboDuo and PC Engine Duo have capacitor issues as well. In the case of the TurboDuo, the audio caps will give out and you'll either have intermittent CD audio or no CD audio at all. It's a very easy fix though, if you're good with soldering.

True, NEC didn't release it themselves, but it was released in Europe as this:

AFAIK it's most prominent in the Express and the Duo (both PC and Turbo), fixable in most cases but a pain in the ass for sure.

I've had my Express re-capped to decent results but I've seen Duo's attempted to be fixed with lots of work and no success.

Wasn't there a huge capacitor problem throughout the electronics industry at that time? Game Gears fell victim as well.

Ohya, those are some of my favourites too sans Sinistron, Cyber Core and Double Dungeons. I just have too many mixed feelings on those ones there.

If I knew the Turbo Express Portable was so expensive I'd have a TG16 and Turbo Express Portable right now. I had the chance at picking up both and eight hue cards for $120.

Anyways. I like a lot of the games, but I've only emulated the system so rarely ever play it.

My favorite all time gaming console. I got a Turbo back in the day when the Genesis and the SNES was fighting for number one. The Turbo became my console of choice back then because of the shooters. I later got a Duo and then a Turbo Express.
I still remember importing the Street Fighter 2 game and purchasing the converter to play the game on the express. The first portable Street Fight 2 game.

My Turbo Grafx 16 is hooked up to my gaming TV right here beside me with a stack of Hucards.

My white PCE has bad capacitors which cause all audio to crackle. Wasn't terribly noticeable until I got my newer black PCE, and I realized that the audio was much clearer.

The TG-16 was one of those systems that looked so amazing back in the day, but I never owned one (I had a Genesis and then a SNES). I didn't even know anyone who had one, they were pretty rare in my neck of the woods. I still drooled over that Babbages video showing China Warrior and Fu Manchu.

I just love everything about the turbo the fact it uses the cards, the fact it was 16 bit at the time of 8 bit. It has so many great games, The look of the machine is so sleek and mature looking, great controller. I mean it used CD type cases for it's games with everything came in a card board box. That alone is cool.
