I may have to eat my words WelcomeToTheNextLevel, I just saw this copy of Earthbound today:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/220944837549

Currently at $860 USD! That's like a really shitty car, or a loose Magical Chase :3
I can beat that.

Wtf??? How do these fucks get away with those prices? No one in they right mind would buy that at that price.

You said it yourself. Look, I love the Mother series but some of the fans are insane. They can get real pushy, too. Not to be too political but they are like Ron Paul supporters :)

I don't blame the guy who listed that copy, it was listed at $0.99 and the bidders raised it to over $1200.00. I can only imagine the collector who bought it being extremely rich, extremely overweight, and paying servants to hose him with liquid chocolate as he plays his games.

Might he look something like this?

I sadly forgot about Governor Phatt, that actually would be pretty accurate. I was actually reminded of some other disturbed eccentric, the almost unheard of Lord Ban Boulie. I don't know why but that's how I picture most NintendoAge collectors in my mind, and I was reminded of his image again after seeing that completed auction for Earthbound.

The guy paid $4 shipping... That's not too bad.

$1000+ for a truly mint copy is likely too low. To find the guide and box in mint condition is a rare occasion. My copy had a few dents on the box and the guide was splitting on the spine and it still was pushing record price.

Next year, a topic like this will say "should I pick up Earthbound now for $250, or will the price go down?"

Hint: It's not going down. Not until the SNES market in general dies.

Patience is the key really here. Sooner or later the classic video game market for NES and SNES is going to seriously bottom out a la Atari, and when it does you can start scooping up games like Earthbound for a bit cheaper than what they're going for now for sure.

This is a nightmare. To those obsessed fans of the Mother series who pay this much and also recognize the rank dialog from Faxanadu:

"I shall give you a title 'Motherfucker'. Make sure you live up to it."

In January 2012, I forecasted that Earthbound prices would be 200-300 bucks for cart only in 2013-2014. An eBay search found the cheapest carts in the $190 range on May 3, 2014.

I was actually never a big fan of the game, but I do regret not picking it up a few years ago. A local shop had it priced at $50 back in 2011 when it was probably approaching $100 on eBay. I realized it was a good deal, but couldnt force myself to buy a game I didn't really want.

I can actually say the same thing about numerous games over the years. The biggest regret is passing up Spiderman 32x for $60 a few years back as well as Crusader of Centy CIB twice in the 40-50 range. Ah retrospect, you can drive a man to drink.

This is my view as well, except I would have picked up Crusader of Centy in a heartbeat.

Wow, I'm amazed how prices changed in only 2 DAYS!

Especially since I see loose carts ending in the $140-150 range, not $190.

I paid $75 for a loose cart in 2009 which was a fair price at the time. I then watched the price climb and climb until the VC release. I think I remember seeing loose carts fetching upwards of $250 less than two years ago, but now they seem to have settled down to around $140 or so.
