Jap Mega Drive cartridge in PAL 32X - will it fit?

Anybody know if a Japanese Sega Mega Drive cartridge will physically fit into the slot of a PAL Sega 32X?
That is, without modifying the cartridge slot?

Japanese Mega Drive cartridges are wider than PAL ones, so usually the only way to make them fit is to widen the PAL mega drive's slot.
However, the PAL 32X slot is a little wider, making me wonder if a jap cart will fit, albeit snug...

I'm not interested the in region-coding of games, just the physicality...

Since the 32x cartridges are wider than the MegaDrive/Genesis I believe it fits physically, of course the region lock is the only thing that prevents it from working.

American and European 32X units have the same slot. Same goes for Mega Drive games.
I tested this out the other day with a Japanese cart on my recently acquired 32X, and it did not fit. Getting a Game Genie for passthrough and region-lock avoidance would be my best bet. Not sure if it works through the 32X though.
