Considering the absurd price on some of these, I was wondering does anyone strictly collect the collector's edition copies of games? If so you should show them off!
edit: oops sorry I mean to put this in Modern Gaming. I apologize, would a mod mind moving it?

I don't strictly collect them persay, but if a title is of significant interest to me then I usually buy the collector's edition.
Only CE I'll be buying this year is the Deadrising 2 for $80 on 360.

Only if it's a title I'm interested in. Too many "Limited Editions" out there to buy just because.
I've penciled in Fallout: New Vegas and Gran Turismo 5 as my LE's for the rest of the year.

I pretty much agree with the previous responses. If I'm really into a series, or looking forward to a game, I'll pick up the CE. I'm going to get the CE of Fallout: New Vegas for sure, and will probably pick up the CE of Two Worlds II (god, I hope it's good).

Color me in with joneboner. The Deadrising 2 LE is a must have for me. Can I say it's BS that the Euro LE blows the US one away.
With LEs in the past, it's whatever I could get my hands on cheap. However, that just doesn't make any sense anymore.
These days, if I'm actually going to play the game, I will opt towards the LE even if I rarely ever look at the LE components. See also: Alan Wake, ASS ASS 2, God of War 3.
Two extremes from this year alone: Bioshock 2 which I didn't even take out of the shipping case and bought the game for the PC along with the 360 LE and the Tekken 6 LE which gets lots of usage as my PS3 stick.

I never do. I see it as one of those things you wish you bought and never did. If you could see in the future and predict which ones will be valuable that would be convenient.

If the price is right, I will get it. I got Halo 3 Legendary for $50 new from Amazon awhile back, when Halo 3 was still selling for $60 new, so I think that was a good decision.
I will eventually get MW2 Prestige Edition when the price drops.
I got Arkham Asylum for 50 or 60 when it was still selling new for 50 or 60, so I think those were worth it.

I would venture to guess that the vast majority of "collector's edition" games I've bought are actually the ONLY version of said game being sold, which makes the decision pretty easy. The big headache is getting Japanese limited editions because people often go nuts with price gouging. Trying to get the Valkyrie Profile 2 set was a complete debacle for me. Pre-ordered it far in advance, only to be told by NCS that their suppliers were asking twice what they should have.

which leads to the question...
Are you still a collector if you own none?

I collect collector edition game. With so many franchise coming out with CE, I am only going with niche title or CE with great content.

If I am going to buy the game, I get the CE. I don't think I have ever actually used the bonus content, although the NVG from MW2 sure did come in handy during a power outage.

I don't go out of my way to get them, but I certainly prefer them when it comes to games that I plan on getting for myself. I have stuff like SMT Devil Summoner 2, Sakura Wars So Long My Love, Mana Khemia 2... etc etc. Half the time I don't even like the LE stuff that comes w/ it tho. Devil Summoner 2 was a sweet LE, and I love a lot of Japanese LE stuff (Square Millennium Collection and any LE consoles, really). But yeah I usually don't go out of my way unless it's a game from a series I really like or it has some really awesome stuff with it. (The two SaGa Frontier SMC ones are a good example of me not liking the games but loving the LE stuff.)

I generally buy Collectors Editions for 360. If the game comes as a collectors edition and a regular edition, I choose to buy the collectors. I rarely buy them new unless the title is something I want. I waited until I found the Halo 3 Legendary Edition for $20 before I bought it.
I have a box full of Xbox360 collectors edition games. I can take a picture if someone so wishes, it's nothing spectacular though. I have the following CE/LE 360 games: Forza 2, Prey, Gears of War, Gears of War 2, Fallout 3, Two Worlds, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Hardened Edition, Resident Evil 5, Street Fighter 4, Mass Effect, Deathsmiles(only available with Faceplate in US?), Alone in the Dark(Soundtrack Edition, not exactly CE/LE I suppose), BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger, Grand Theft Auto IV, Perfect Dark Zero, Prince Of Persia, Raiden IV("Gamestop Limited Edition" w/soundtrack), Shaun White Snowboarding(Target Limited Edition), Soldier of Fortune: Payback(Ultimate Mercenary Box Set, comes with First Blood DVD), Turning Point: Fall of Liberty, Viva Pinata(Special Edition, the one in the weird shaped box, technically a "Special Edition"), and there might be some other ones I am missing out of that list. I just took that right from my collection list.
Yes, I do collect 360 games in case you are wondering. Seems dumb to most but I enjoy it.

I rarely buy collector's editions versions and if I do it's always dependent on price, extras, or how much I like the series.
Most collector's editions I picked up at $20, my favorite of those being Stranglehold because not only is it a pretty good game, but it comes with Hard Boiled which is an awesome movie.
There's only six collector's/limited editions I've picked up at full price(seven if you count that I have Ys7 preordered.) Final Fantasy 12(which was a mistake,) Growlanser Generations Deluxe, Resident Evil 4, Scarface the World is Yours, Demon's Souls(sold all the extras to maxlords, kept the game) and .hack//G.U. With .hack//G.U. I bought the regular version for cheap and then finished although didn't like it too much, sold both copies on Ebay soon after, getting my money back on the regular version and then making about $30-40 more than one I paid for the collector's edition.)
Is the extra packaging that came with Persona 3 a collector's edition or did all copies of Persona 3 come with the artbook. I don't remember. I have both Persona 3 and FES with the extra content. FES because Amazon was selling it for $20 inside the same kind of box with the same artbooks that came with Persona 3. If so then add Persona 3 to collector's editions I bought at full price.

I'm pretty cheap. I rarely drop $60 for a new game. Fallout 3 was the only game in recent memory that I spent that kinda money on. So no, I don't buy LE's or CE's really ever. Nothing in the LE's interests me. I have too much crap the way it is, and an oversized box takes up too much room.

I admit it, I'm a sucker for LE's. I collect them for 360, and I've bought some LE's of games that I probably wouldn't have otherwise bought (Stranglehold, Perfect Dark Zero, Two Worlds... all of those were cheap at least). I've toyed with the idea of trying to get all the LE's, but there are some that kind of ruin it for me (like the Gamestop exclusive Smackdown vs. Raw LE, and all the Madden LE's).
I also find it very frustrating when the game later gets a Gold/GOTY re-release with additional content... so what's the best one to have now? The LE with the nice packaging, or the re-release with extra content? Unfortunately for my wallet, the answer will likely be "both"... :(

Double troof.
Ze_ro and I end up getting some of the regional stuff and send them across the borders to each other. I've got most of the 360 ones, but I don't have many of the GameStop exclusives and i've not gotten some of the others either (Need for Speed, Madden, NBA 2k10 w/ locker), as these things keep getting bigger and bigger and well, my apartment doesn't.

Hahaha, hopefully you are not into rhythm games as well. I have dj hero, dj hero renegade edition , dj hero demo unit, rock band 1 and 2 (both full instrument editions), a few guitar heros.
I am a sucker for a random plastic peripheral

Of those only 2 are 'collector editions' (DJ Hero Renegade and Rock Band) and one of those only came that way (Rock Band) so really its hard to count it as such because its a loaded 'Special Edition'. I've got plenty of plastic equipment and expensive versions of it to boot (Premium Ion Drum kit).

I'm patiently waiting for the day that hits $20. It's so comically oversized that I have to have it.

I don't consider myself a collector of collector's editions(atleast not this gen) but I do have a good amount of 360 collectors/special/limited editions. Only one of those was bought at full retail but the rest(like the recently purchased Batman: AA collectors edition) were bought for discounts ranging from 50-80% off. At that price I have no problems making room for the extra storage......for now.

Same here. I'm surprised that it hasn't gone on sale because I see them at all the gamestops around here.
I'm a sucker of an LE. In fact because of this thread I've just contacted someone to buy Mass Effect. I'm still looking for a good price on Batman AA looks like I may have missed the boat though.

If you have Walmarts around you check there. They are clearancing out the Batman:AA special edition for $40(360+PS3) as well as Bioshock 2 limited edition(360+PS3) for $40. And if they have any of the Fallout 3 limited edition left they are also clearancing those out for $40 as well, although that might have been reduced further.

Whats a dj hero demo unit? What system is it for? It comes with a demo disc?

Thanks for the heads up. I know a couple places that did have them cheap but they are all sold out.

If the collectors edition is out there I will gravitate towards that, I am a true sucker for the so called LE. There have been some nice ones, bioshock 1,call of duty IMO, metal gear sub,A;
alan wake. Dead space ultra limited (I personally think they sold more than 1000) But there have been some turds,
These are my top 3 ripoffs that I paid full price for.
Gamestops re4 limited edition and Assasins creed 1 (and I was warned on that one by a friend) piece of shit. Halo 3 legendary. I wanna buy the reach legendary edition they claim it will be limited but I have a fear when I get burned.
I am also a sucker for Limited edition consoles. Re5,MW2, and now the halo reach 360 console. I don't know why but I an just attracted to these.
I agree it sucks when you see goty edition like batman 3d. They really leave a bad taste in my mouth
