Hey guys I just got back from Play N Trade here in Sarasota and they were having a sale where if you buy 3 used games, you get 40% off all 3/

I managed to score Suikoden II for $71.99, Xenogears for $35.99 and The Legend of Dragoon for $11.99 after the discount was applied.

I have heard alot about Suikoden II, but has anyone ever played Xenogears or Legend of Dragoon before?

Im pretty sure I got a good deal, they are all black labels and complete in mint condition.

Heres a pic of my score

Xenogears is the best of the three. Legend of Dragoon is just decent.

I'm just wondering. If you bought three RPGs I'm sure you like the genre, so how have you not heard about how good Xenogears is?

Anyways, based on gameplay. Xenogears is a more simplified version of Legend of Legaia if you've ever played that. You input commands your attack goes off. No way to use more than one at a time unless you save your combo AP and then do them all in one long single combo that actually takes off less damage if you did it turn by turn, but there's still a use for that depending on the enemy. While it's an RPG, there's a lot of platforming elements in the game as well(my favorite genre aside from RPGs.) The gameplay isn't perfect because almost all magic is useless and there's really no variety to each battle as you're mainly either using a certain combo to learn it or using the latest combo to take more damage.

Now we come to the storyline. Xenogears has one of the best storylines in a video game. There is a ton of text and the first half of disc 2 you'll be spending more time reading than doing anything else. There are some things in the game that will confuse you so if you play it a second time you'll come across those and then you'll immediately understand, or you might just remember those parts whenever you come across them in the future.

Then there's graphics and music. The graphics consist of 2d anime style models while the rest of the game is in complete 3d. The music is composed by Yasunori Mitsuda of Chrono Trigger fame, and the soundtrack is once again one of the best.

I'm going to have to disagree. While Xenogears is a very good game, Suikoden 2 is the best game in that lot.

Also, this post would have better for the "finds" thread and not its own. Just saying.

Suikoden 2 is the best game of the three. I don't care for Xenogears or Legend of Dragoon.

Legend of Dragoon is fun to play, mate; nice score with those 3 games.

Suikoden II and Xenogears are both great but the second is not for every gamer. Suikoden II is way beyond Xenogears in the gameplay department and both stories are amazingly well crafted but Xenogears is a much more dense and dark experience that will make you deep think about what is happening in the game.

Xenogears is also a bit frustrating for some people that dislike navigating in free-roaming 3D environments because it has a few platform sections where paths are not obvious. The battle system is a bit more interactive than Suikoden II because it uses a combo system and the mech battles are intense.

Legend of Dragoon is not on the same league that those two classics but its a nice RPG that is easy to get into.

Legend of Dragoon has the most fun gameplay in my opinion. It's probably the easiest of the three also. Xenogears is frustrating, but the story is amazing.

OMG, Legend of Dragoon is awesome. Nice finds! You'll enjoy Dragoon though. "Gust of Wind Dance!"

Xenogears is a frustrating mess of a game that should have been an anime instead. Or, you know, playtested before being released. That would have been good too.

Suikoden II, on the other hand, is amazing.

LoD has some of the worst voice acting and localization work I've seen.

So one outta three. But Xeno can be resold if you don't enjoy it, for probably more than you paid.

Suikoden II is one of my favorite games of all time. I scored mine for about 80 bucks. Sucks because I used to have it when I was younger too hah. But yeah its an awesome game. :guitar:

Suikoden II is one of my favorite RPGs ever.

I don't know how much Xenogears and LoD usually go for, but for a complete copy of Suikoden II, you're often talking about $180-$200+ on ebay. Maybe even higher now, I haven't checked prices in a while. So you got an excellent deal to snag it for $72.

I love the variety of opinions in this thread!
IMHO, Legend of Dragoon is not in the league of the other two.

Xenogears was the last Square RPG that really sent me into "another world" gameplay wise... I loved everything about it, the story, the gameplay, everything. To this day it is one of my all time favorite RPGs and Ive been playing them since Dragon Warrior I on the NES. I am always amazed by people who talk it down because I loved it so much. It's definitely one of the most divisive RPGs in history.

Yeah, I'm shocked by the responses in this thread too.

IMO Suikoden II is easily the best of the lot. It's shorter than the other two by a bit, but also easily has the best storyline....and gameplay. Very streamlined, very fun, lots of sidequests that don't get too silly, etc. Easily has the most personality of the three and is just damned fun. Honestly it's probably in my top three games of all time.

Xenogears is a great RPG, neat concepts, good story....but it's pacing is AWFUL. It moves at an absolute crawl. Music is awesome though. I don't want to knock it, cause it IS good, but IMO it's not anywhere near Suiky II.

Legend of Dragoon isn't bad definitely...but I'd say upper second tier for PS1 RPGs. It's fun, not a bad game, just not quite as good as Xenogears and nowhere near Suikoden II.

I've said it a million times before but I'll say it again: platforming and random battles do NOT mix. You can make a jump and get into a random battle mid-jump. And afterwards, plummet all the way back down to the bottom of the huge flipping tower you were climbing. Anyone that doesn't break the disc in half when they get to Babel Tower (or whatever it's called) is some kind of gaming masochist. I hated the game up until that point. Afterwards, I wanted to kill the developers' families while they watched helplessly.

I quoted you last time you said this also. You can't get in random battles mid jump. It also won't allow you to jump while the game is loading a random battle. Play the game on the original PSX you'll always know when a random battle is coming along because you'll hear the loading sound(so it masks load times.)

The only time you might end up falling down due to a random battle is whenever the random battle is loading and you're trying to make a jump but it doesn't allow you to jump due to it loading and you go off the edge.

THANKKKK YOU! that game makes u fucking WORKKKK for your entertainment, jesus christ lol

and btw, u definitelyyyy got a deal on those games, especially suikoden, i picked my copy up about 3 years ago for around 105-110 dollars, not sure which, that game goes for anywhere between $120-180 and sometimes 200 on ebay, so if nothing else, u can always turn around and make double your money back

i own all those rpgs that u purchased but i honestly cant chime in on anything outside of xenogears since i havent gotten around to playing them yet, my backlog is huge and im lazy on top of that lol, be careful with xenogears tho, that game gets glitchy at times and i ran into the gamebreaking deus fight on disc 2 which crashes the game and wont allow me to progress, i doubt im going to be able to finish the game ever now unless i find a workaround, keep that in mind if u decide to dump 100+ hours into that game

I'm sorry but I did play Xenogears on the original PS1 (before the PS2 was even released) and you most certainly can get into a random battle while jumping. Maybe you can tell when they're going to happen b/c it makes a noise, but I've fallen several times mid-jump. I know what I'm talking about.

Can't be worse then the jumping in Turok (N64).....or can it?

I've never played any of the Turok games, actually. And truth be told I'm not big on platformers or action games. It's probably the big reason I'm not a fan of the platforming in Xenogears. I also found myself accidentally hitting the shoulder button when jumping, which causes the screen to rotate. XD That at least I can (mostly) chalk up to me being a spaz rather than it being a design flaw.

I hated Legend of Dragoon because it took waaay to long to load the random battle screens. It just made it not fun.

I know I'm the odd duck here, but of the three I'd say Suikoden II is only good as a $$ game. Had it, hated it, and sold it here for grocery money over four years ago. Xenogears was my favorite of the three. Loved the story. Dragoon never gets the love nor attention it deserves. Sony released RPGs are rare and hard to find. Ones as good as this are just as rare. We'll never see a sequal which is actualy a shame but atleast it's low priced that most people that havent played it can enjoy it for an affordable price.

maxlords-i still remember paying $20 for mine thinking it'd be as good as the first one. Needless to say I was disapointed.

Which still astonishes me...but that's why so many games are made....so many different tastes I suppose :)

The only problem with Suikoden 2 is that the story wasn't really good. The gameplay was better than the first but the story just dragged badly. After Luca is killed you might as well say you beat the game if you're in it for the storyline only because it only gets worse.

Suikoden II rocks in my world - easily the best out of the three games (and I own the other two). One of the best parts of this game is the ability to import your game save from Suikoden I - this opens up a new area/quest/character into the game. This game is in definitely in my top ten games of all time.

I completely disagree with every part of the above statement.
