and something happened that totally blew me away. Here's how it went down...
I had just finished listing a load of Sega games on eBay and I was hungry as hell. I'd also been fiending for an Isles Italian sub all day, unfortunately they stop serving food at 10 p.m. Since there were a bunch of invoices that needed sending I took my laptop with me so I could get my order in on time. After destroying the sub, downing a pitcher of Miller Lite and sending all the invoices I went over to load up the jukebox with Black Keys tracks.
It was a slow night which is cool with me because then Todd the bartender will turn up stereo for you. Plus no one will come in and pay the extra money to jump your tracks on the playlist (like the last Thursday I was there). As I was inputting tracks I thought I heard someone mention that they had gone to the Primus concert in Omaha on Monday. Being a lifelong and diehard Primus fan I asked from afar:
"You went to the Primus concert!?!"
"Yeah, did you go?"
"No, I was at the Black Keys (which unfortunately was the same night) but I really wanted to go."
So I finished putting tracks on, now supplemented with Primus songs of course, and went back to the bar. The guys at the other end of the bar seemed to be good friends with Todd so I went over and sat down next to them instead of going back and sitting by myself. I ordered a pitcher of Bud Light and started talking to the guy about Primus. Talk then turned to the Huskers as it often does in Nebraska. The 2009 Big 12 Championship game, this year's schedule, our thoughts about moving to the Big 10 and trivia jousts about the numerous records the Huskers hold.
A bit later someone mentioned the fact that I had brought my laptop with me. I told them about how I sell video games on eBay and the guy sitting next to me had a bit of a surprised look on his face. I asked him if he was in to video games, and he goes:
"Yeah, I have every game for NES, SNES and N64. I'm like the 4th biggest Nintendo collector in the world."
"You've got to be kidding me! I have every game for Master System, Genesis, Sega CD, 32X, Saturn and Dreamcast!"
So I started asking him about his collection, whether or not he had a NWC cartridge and whether or not he had Stadium Events. Turns out he has them both, I don't remember if the NWC is the Gold or the Grey one. Then I asked about if he had seen an auction for Stadium Events on eBay where that lady had no idea what she was selling. He said yes and that she had ended up getting $13,000 for it. We continued on at length about video games until the pub was about to close. I said him and his buddies should come over and check out my collection, hang out and have a few beers. He said he couldn't because he was already having people over for after hours but that I should come over and check his place out. I went home to grab the Coors Lights I had in the fridge and headed over. We each live about six blocks from The Isles so he only lives about 12 blocks away from me. When I got there he showed me this:

I was pretty blown away. I don't really care for NES myself but I am a big SNES and N64 fan, plus it is just cool to see someone else who has the dedication to form such an amazing collection. Not only does he have all of the licensed games but also almost every other game outside of protos that there is. He said there are only two games he's missing to have basically every game ever released in the U.S. Not only that he is pretty much the definitive U.S. Nintendo game list maker. He also knows DreamTR from here at DP and I believe keeps track of the arcade cabs Dream has for sale.
As if that weren't enough, I walk in to his garage and it is sweet game room. MAME cab, Super Off Road, T2: The Arcade Game, Playchoice 10, a pool table, a foosball table, a card table and speakers. I think there was another cab or two but I can't remember them all. So it began. I was like a kid in a candy store. I started off playing Super Off Road, I love that game and there is nothing like playing the arcade which has the steering wheel. Next I went over and played Street Fighter Alpha on the MAME cab for a few minutes. After that I felt like I was being a bit anti-social so I went over and sat down at the card table to talk to people. Not surprisingly Jared (aka Sparky1821) knows other people I kind of know from around the Havelock area of Lincoln, his girlfriend Rachel is one of the waitresses from the Isles and Dan one of the bartenders from Bob's Tavern. And his dog is really friendly too, she'll jump right up on your lap so you can pet her.
We got in a game of foosball and then started playing 10 point pitch. Fortunately Jared and some of his friends are night owls like me so even after most people had left we still had four players for another game of pitch. After that game I still wanted to stay in this mini-paradise but I could tell Jared, Dan and his roommate Mick were getting tired so I drank as much water as I could in preparation for heading home. Right after the sun came up I hit the short trail back to my place with only one thought in my head... wow.
