I'm wanting to get into western RPGs lately. What are some with deep plots? Preferably on PC, DOS, or 8 and 16 bit consoles. Modern games preferred.

Mass Effect series.
Although the story is horrible, Borderlands is super badass.

Mass Effect has a pretty involving plot, certain things you do in each game effect things in ME2 and which has events that will effect things in ME3. Dragon Age Origins has a pretty deep plot as well, along with the Fallout series.

I'd have to agree with Fallout.

How do you prefer PC, DOS or 8 and 18 but consoles, yet prefer modern games?
How about Diablo?

How about Diablo?
Diablo has a deep plot? The first one really has no plot and the second one has such a boring story between acts that if there's some kind of deep plot in there I must have missed it.
Given the question being an 8/16bit modern western RPG, I can see why you said that. There's really nothing else to choose from :P.
The closest to his question that I could come up with isn't an RPG and isn't quite 16bit. Blood Omen Legacy of Kain is a 16bit and 32bit action/adventure title with a very good plot. Reason I still mentioned it is because Blood Omen Legacy of Kain is always incorrectly labeled as an RPG.

After reading this I wonder if they actually played the game. Sure they call it an RPG, which is incorrect, but 50 - 70 hours? Riiiight.

I'll admit it doesn't have a deep plot, but it is a lengthy game, with a western style, and fits the other criteria

Star Wars: Knights of The Old Republic 1 and 2(Xbox). The main story of each was pretty involving and you didn't need to finish every single side quest to figure out the majority of each supporting characters back stories. The ending of each made me pretty satisfied after my 40+ hour journey but they also left me wanting more.

Jade Empire for the Xbox is another great WRPG that hasn't been already listed. Regarding current gen consoles, Lost Odyssey (360), Two Worlds (360 and Sacred 2 (360/PS3) are solid choices, though the last two are more action/RPG.

Planescape Torment and Ultima 7.

The deepest one is Planescape: Torment. It's a very text heavy game and it reads like a really good novel, except that you have freedom to change the plot. From a pure storytelling perspective it's the best RPG I've ever played, from Dragon Warrior to Dragon Age.

Lost Odyssey is a JRPG.
Check out the Baldur's Gate series. Any of the old Black Isle stuff is pretty good. I've also heard good things about the Ultima series, which got a little deeper starting with IV.
If you're open to an MMO, Everquest II just opened up a free server. There's a lot of backstory to get into there...
I'm not sure if modern western RPGs are the way to go, because they're becoming more action-oriented. I think that an RPG should be more tactical and slower paced so that you can, you know... roleplay.

@ NayusDante - agreed. Still a good/easy to ease into RPG though (which I think the OP is looking for).

Deus Ex is a awesome game if you are looking for a good plot and gameplay. Its still one of the best games ever made imo, and it has a good storyline to it and many ways to customize your character. The main storyline itself runs about 20 hrs at a minimum if you just breeze through it. But with all the stuff you can do and experiment with in the game ,its easy to hit 60+. Just avoid the sequel to it, its a decent game on its own...But fails as a sequel to Deus Ex.

ANACHRONOX! Except of course it ends on an eternally unresolved cliffhanger. Also, someone's going to argue it's not a Western RPG in a traditional sense.
The same might be said about SepterraCore, except that one has an ending, apparently.

I have that game and while I enjoyed it, man was it buggy as hell. Even with the patch they released the game would still hang on occasions. I never had a chance to finish it because I was tired of it crashing and gave up on it after I got stuck at a certain point.

It's actually still available for purchase on GOG.com. Not sure if it's any less buggy, though (but I would hope so). The sound would stutter unceasingly when I tried to play it fullscreen with an nVidia card under Win98.

I've heard good things about Arcanum, which is also available at GOG.com (I have it but haven't played it yet.)

Consider this as another vote for Planescape: Torment. It's fantastic.
I'd also vote up Arcanum, Anachronox, and the Fallout games. Good stuff all around.
