View Full Version : Super Mario World Beta?

On occasion I have heard tales of some version of Super Mario World that appeared in the arcades, but that wasn't quite the same as the final version released on the SNES. For instance, it featured leaf power-ups instead of feathers.
Is this another groundless rumor? If not, is there some reason it hasn't appeared in MAME yet? (Surely with open-source SNES emulators available it would not be difficult to include it.)

Actually, I took a trip to Nickel world not that long ago and some kid was playing Mario World on a generic cabinet. They didn't leave it though, so I can't say I noticed any differences.
Yes, I remember playing a different Super Mario World game in the arcade too. There was a warp zone at the beginning allowing you to start in the different worlds. There were a few different stages which never made it into the final game. I remember my brother and I were so disappointed when we got the SNES version and it was different.

Yes... Actually, I think your story was one of the ones I've read before. ;-)
But no one else has seen any sign of this? SMW so consistently makes people's Top Ten lists that I thought there would be more interest.

I had heard of this before:

It's similar to Nintendo's "Playchoice 10", which was basically an NES in an arcade cabinet. I had never heard anything about differences between the arcade and released versions of SMW though. As far as I knew, all Playchoice and Super System games were identical to the normal released versions. I really don't get into emulators, but if somebody is, look for a rom. It may be floating around somewhere

I knew it, the Super System. Finding out about that thing is darn near impossible, like that arcade version Sega Mega Drive (no, not the 6-slot demo addon). For example, I've seen some sites say it had Contra 3, and others say it didn't. I would say that these things are probably not impossible to find out about, but the fact that there's almost no information after all these years is a concern.

That would be the one. Can't find anything on that one using good ol' Google.

An old episode of Nintendo Power which features the development of the Super Famicom shows a picture of the overworld map from SMW that was quite a bit different from the released version. You might want to look at old NPs to see what they say. I can't remember the number, but it's pretty old. Maniac Mansion is on the cover.

Its either issue 18 or 19..yep its the Maniac Mansion cover, and the page is near the end of the mag. They also had an early pic of the SFC with all red buttons. The beta pics were neat, I'm interested in hearing more about the arcade ver.

I have a picture of the board of the Super System on my website, but it is down right now :/
Oh yeah, Zsnes supports Super System emulation.
