Hey,

I finally got my basement arcade finished to a state that's playable and presentable. It's been a LONG time since I actually had a full room of working games, and all able to be played :) . I just hosted a party today, which was a LOT of fun, but I was reminded that I never posted pics of my arcade here (at least not in quite a few years)... so here you go!

Top Skater is an interesting unit to have. I remember that was one of the first really next gen games to come out at the arcade that I actually liked, course shortly after is when they all started closing down, coincidence....I dunno, but an interesting unit to have for prosperity's sake.

Yeah... of the later generation games, Top Skater was one that I had to have. The other newer games that I really like are SF Rush (which I currently own), Super GT (used to own until I completely mastered it), Hydro Thunder (haven't owned yet, but likely will one of these days), and Police 911 (currently own Police 911 2). I played pretty much all of these in a Sports Bar as a teenager... there weren't very many arcades left, and I didn't go to the few that there were very often.

I do like mostly classic games, and a lot of people have a "classic" arcade setup... I decided that I really just want "good" arcade setup. The year that the game came out doesn't matter, as long as it's good.

Amazing. Must be quite a power bill!

Heh... actually, I calculated it to be about $1/hr to run the whole arcade (and of course they're all on pretty much only when I have people over playing them). And then you have to add in the cost for extra AC running to keep it cool (during the summer, subtract it from the gas bill for heating in the winter ;-) ).

Wow, that is an awesome setup.

That was a little difficult, but it comes apart in several pieces. The rear projection monitor comes off the stand and the monitor stand then is it's own piece. The difficult part is the skateboard base. This is meant to be all one piece, and weighs about 500lbs, and is too big to fit through any single doorway (38" wide). I had taken apart sliding patio doors to get it in/out in the past, and helped my friend install french doors to take it out when it was at his house... but this time I decided to attempt to disassemble the base. I found about 30 bolts and some connectors that were used to connect the rails and coin box to the bottom. Once I did this, at least the base could be tipped on its side and brought through the door. Unfortunately, the base was still about 400lbs, so that still wasn't easy :P .

First off, I really like the carpet. It's cool. Second, I 100% agree withj your earlier comment about "It doesn't matter what year it came out, as long as it was good." That is how I feel about my games as well. Unfortunately for others, our idea of what is "good" doesn't always mesh with theirs. But then, they are welcome to have their own arcades with theor own "good" games as well :P
Nice looking rooms, though. You have obviously put a LOT of work and effort into that, and deserve a ton of credit for it...Now stop posting here and go play some games!!

Thanks. :) And yeah... I really don't buy stuff just because other people like it, because for the most part it won't be other people playing them, and it's not other people's money buying them. ;) Notice that there's no Pac/Ms. Pac in the arcade... I've owned quite a few of them over the years, but it's just not something I play much. For the "other people" I have a 48-in-1 cocktail table as an end table in my living room. :P

Thanks :) . The power cord set up isn't too bad... basically I made sure I had plenty of outlets on many breakers, spread throughout the arcade. The breaker box is on the wall next to Police 911 2, so I popped in an extra 30A breaker and ran a 30A outlet right below it, and connected up two 15A circuits, one for the vector row and one for the large games (the SF Rush row). Then I have 7 remote controlled power strips ( http://www.belkin.com/conserve/switch/ ) which all the games plug into... and I hacked one of the controllers so all the power is remotely controlled from the jukebox PC. There's 120A worth of breakers down there, and when they're all on, they draw ~70A-80A.

Heh, actually I've been out of town the last two years, since I usually travel around New Years... but I've been helping them out again this year (Mike just picked up a bunch of stuff I tested/fixed tonight), and hopefully I'll be able to make it this time, since it's not over New Years.

But thanks for the compliments... if you're up this way and want to drop by, let me know!

Heh, actually... I didn't think of that at all (nor has anyone mentioned that to me). I just went to Lowes and looked for the brightest paint colors I could find, took the samples home, snapped some pictures of the walls, then photoshopped various colors. The blue and orange ones looked the best IMO, so those are the colors I ended up going with.

Good eye though... and maybe that's the same process Nintendo went through (great minds think alike) ;) . Regardless, I certainly do like Nintendo :) .

When I have a lot of spare time, I go down there fairly often (several times each week, for an hour or so each time)... unfortunately, lately I haven't had much spare time (taking two grad school classes, working full time, travelling, still trying to have a "life"), so I haven't had the games on in probably 3 weeks :( .

Same as the others... I couldn't pass by without leaving you some form of a comment. This is just a stunning example of preservation and hobby.

I would do the same type of thing if I had the money. I'm not wealthy enough to get machines in that nice shape, and the restorations would take forever. You have everything detailed down to legitimate arcade blacklight carpet! I am truly impressed. I actually spent two years turning my basement into a recording studio, and now that it's done, I ended up renting an actual studio in town. So now I'm thinking to turn it into some fraction of what you have... and even that would be amazing.

Great choice of games, great design, and great post. Thanks for sharing man!

Now if I can only find a decent deal on a Crystal Castles, or Centipede!

Thanks! Like most collectors of stuff, after collecting long enough, you tend to come across a LOT of cool things, which get kept for the permanent collection. I've been collecting arcades for almost 10 years, and while it started as just getting a few games and some boards to play in those cabinets, eventually it went to buying large lots of games and picking up any cheap/free games I could. That caused my garage/basement to basically turn into a warehouse, where I couldn't play anything and I almost couldn't stand to look at it, because there was so much stuff that needed to be fixed that I didn't know where to start.

Eventually, I started sifting through stuff, fixing up non-keepers to sell so I could clear some space for the keepers... and most of all, stopped buying stuff unless it was something I actually wanted ;) . Then I moved, and decided to go all out since if I didn't set up the arcade then (before getting everything in the basement), it was never going to happen. I moved walls and took out doors in the basement, got the carpet ordered, picked out the paint, and after about a 1 1/2 years of off and on late night and weekend work (around work, grad school, and other real-life stuff), it was finally where I wanted it.

But yeah... arcade collecting doesn't have to take a lot of money (I'm only 27, and acquired most of my games while I was working part time and going to school)... you really just need to keep your eyes open (watch craigslist, ebay, local auctions, garage sales, etc)... and let people around you know that you're into arcade games. I've gotten free games and leads on good deals from co-workers, friends, family, etc.

DogP

I sort of know your pain on this one. Friend of mine purchased a Top Skater unit from a nearby warehouse, with the intent of getting it through the front door. No plan beyond, "We'll get it in somehow." Never felt more lucky to be his best friend than that day. 3 of us ended up disassembling the side panels off the base unit..and.. turning it on its side after much strain and effort..

(at this point I should mention we are all pretty under-nourished *cough*)

..we pulled paver-stones out of the garden and stacked them up in front of the door because there was about a 5 inch step and we couldn't lift the thing for the life of us. With all 3 of us heaving, we budged it onto the pavers, which immediately began cracking into pieces! We eventually got it up the makeshift paver "ramp" onto the door stop.

(By the way, we couldn't get the door off the hinges for some reason, and we didn't remove the coin bank, so it was essentially like moving a Tetris "L" block through a 36" opening.)

Needless to say alot of grunting, back-straining, near-hernia inducing effort was levied next, with the unit not moving more than a couple inches at a time.

Then we got it wedged against the door. :bawling:

Alot of rocking and shoving ensued and finally it broke free and slid into the living room!

So I can only imagine what it was like to move this into a basement!! By the way, that carpet is beyond awesome. Your arcade collection is amazing and I would pay to play in there!

Heh, that's a good point. I get a lot of comments about how cool the arcade is, but like you, most also make a comment about the carpet... how it really puts it over the top. I also felt that way seeing other people's arcades. I think there's a lot of really impressive home arcades... but when I see one that goes the extra mile with the carpet, lighting, etc, it really takes me back. And that's what I was going for when I designed mine.

Actually... it's not too bad. With everything running, it's drawing about 80A, which comes out to about 10kWh. I'm paying about 10 cents per kWh, so it's only about $1 per hour to run everything... and of course I don't run everything most of the time (just during a party).

Of course, running it in the summer is harder, because the A/C has to run more to compensate for the extra heat given off by the games, but in the winter, they help heat the house ;) .

I've always wanted a basement, but they're pretty down here in the deep south. I have a gameroom of course with all the console stuff covered, and I don't get to get in there near often enough. Now that's in danger of extinction with the new baby on the way. I do have a garage though.....

Anyway I wanted to ask you one thing. Did you buy all those new or did you have to restore any yourself?

I don't think I bought any of them new (most are older than me! ;) )... I wouldn't say I "restored" the majority of them though, compared to what I'd consider "restorations" by some arcade collectors. The majority of them were broken when I got them though, so I fixed/cleaned/adjusted/etc them... but most of the cosmetics were left alone.

Awsome Video.

This thread made me want to register on these forums. A couple of years ago I remember thinking it would be pretty neat to eventually have something like this. Unfortunately, it won't be any time in the near future as I reside in an apartment with a lot of bills to pay as is.

Have you ever considered making a video with instructions on how to fix an arcade machine? It would be cool to see others potentially try this.

Is a black light on in your arcade? If so you and another youtube user (seen here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CE1OBT3XanU) seem to have similar good aesthetic taste. You have more space in your basement than the other guy though. You both have similar carpets I see...

If I ever had a home arcade, I'd go for a similar kind of vintage twilight aesthetic feel.

There's actually quite a few videos on arcade repair... there's just a LOT of different things that can go wrong, so it's hard to do an "arcade repair in a nutshell" video.

Yeah, there's 12 48" blacklights, plus a few smaller ones to fill in the gaps. I didn't notice the carpet in that video, but mine is this: http://www.neoncarpets.com/sections/carpets/detail.cfm?rf=megabytesblack&rp=Megabytes%20Black , which is a blacklight reactive neon carpet.

Also, just an update... I've made a few changes to the gameroom in the last few months. I now have a pair of Hydro Thunders, a pair of Rush 2049s, and a Bump N Jump. I've taken the old SF Rush the Rocks and Klax out. I'll probably be taking a new video in the near future.

I just edited my post above since I posted the wrong video link. The guy with the black lights and similar looking carpet (just less space than you) I was referring to can be seen showing off his lighting system here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CE1OBT3XanU

Looks like he also has a black light neon reactive carpet but just with a planetary pattern. Besides the black lights, the EL lights seem to be another pretty cool touch even though it could maybe interfere with the blacklighting if both are on at the same time (theres also a pretty cool laser show thing too but that seems like it'd be pretty hard on the eyes and overkill combined with the other lighting if constantly going) I wonder if the "EL light's" shown in the video are similar to the ones sold here: http://www.glowstickspro.com/catalog/c1_p1.html
The ones shown in the video seem a bit higher quality though. They look more sturdy but I suppose having something that's bendable may have it's advantages.

Edit:
I found another guy that seems to use the same or similar planetary carpet as well:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EqxfDnmRB1M&NR=1&feature=fvwp).

I suppose one would have to be good with electronics to maintain an arcade in the 1st place. It just would be great to know the general areas of knowledge that should be had to attempt to fix one (what's involved in a general maitenance check, how to obtain parts guides, where to obtain parts, general parts makeup, and/or troubleshooting tips for instance).

Did you get rid of any games to make room for these? I'm interested to see the new video if you get around to it.

Absolutely amazing setup - I'm drooling with envy!

On a side note, thanks for listing the link for that carpet, because it really is awesome!

The room is amazing; that's a given. I just had to come in to give a nod for the carpet as well. It's what I love best about the room, honestly. It reminds me of the arcades, skating rinks, bowling alleys, and theatres I grow up hanging out in back in the 80's.

Thanks for the compliments... it's always great to hear others that appreciate the time and hard work put into making it. I've made some changes in the last few months, so I'll be posting new pics/video in the next week or so. Also, for the locals... I plan to have another party soon... probably next month. I'll make a post when I get a date set.

Not enough Sega. If you were my friend, I'd never want to go to your house.

Just kidding, that is awesome! You even have the cheesy carpet just like a real arcade. Where did you get that? Those rooms really bring back memories. While it is cool to have one or two real arcade machines, your place is an actual arcade. Freakin' awesome! I want one.

Heh, well... I may not have a large number of Sega machines, but my biggest machine is Sega! (Top Skater) That's gotta count for something. :P I used to have a pair of Sega Super GT cabs, but sold them when I picked up the SF Rush cabs. That is a good point though... I never really gave any thought to the lack of (especially classic) Sega cabs. Something like Tac Scan would be really cool to have, but I really hate (fixing) those G08 monitors. I do have my share of JAMMA era Sega PCBs (Shinobi, Golden Axe, MJ Moonwalker, etc), but no dedicated cabinet for them.

I got the carpet from schooloutlet.com ... they sell stuff meant for schools (as you can guess by the name), but they had the best price on the carpet, even though it was special ordered and shipped directly from Flagship Carpet.

You know, I'm usually the type to pooh-pooh on cabs (well, not aloud, but in my head), but I can completely see where you're coming from with that setup. You've got, by and large, the exact kind of cabs I could justify. Vector monitors, specialized controls, pinball... I swear, games like Top Skater, Tempest, and Bride of Pinbot are the only games that have ever tempted me to convert my garage into an arcade. And this is coming from someone who would like to own an arcade if only I could see any financial viability in the prospect.

Really great looking room. Must've been fun just setting the place up and choosing the games alone. I find I enjoy the process just about as much as the games themselves. Perhaps sooner than later I'll finally find a good deal on Tempest and finally delve into the world of cabs. Until then, I'll stick to superguns (and keep my wife contented simultaneously). :)
