Yes, it will still function the same with a new hard drive.

Even with a larger hard drive?

You're replacing the Hard Drive, not the systems motherboard. It will still be the same '60GB' PS3 you bought, just with a bigger Hard Drive in it.

Yes, of course it will, that's just removable storage media.

The backwards compatibility has nothing to do with the HDD, that's all in the system itself.

If you're going to replace you're hard drive go for something large. Make sure it's a 2.5 inch, 5400rpm, sata drive.

Be aware that replacing the drive will not mean that you will retain all your backup data. There are some games that do not allow the transfer of save files from one drive to an external drive (for transfer back to your new drive). Also, any games that loaded data onto your PS3 (e.g. for faster gameplay, or as a requirement to play the game) and any patches downloaded, and also any downloaded games will have to be re-downloaded again.

Prior to replacing your drive, also make sure you sync all your trophy data, or you may find that some trophies you've recently obtained will not be shown when you log in with the new drive.

In short, upgrading your PS3 drive sounds pretty simple (hardware wise), but is a pain in the ass if you have stuff you want to save.

Come on guys tell him the truth. If you have a 60 gig ps3 you can still replace the hard drive, but if you go any higher than 60 gig you will lose ps2 support and if you go higher than 120 gig you will lose PS1 support. You really don't want to find out what you lose when you go over 320 gig, so let's just end the conversation here.

*tries to play PS3 game. doesn't work*

I should have never upgraded to a 500gb hard drive. :(

Supposedly, the Samsung M6 and M7 models are the only 500GB HD's that will work in a PS3.

I was planning on replacing the hard drive in my 60 GB too. i wanted to go to a 500gb, and have even seen 640gb claiming to work for the ps3. is there a limit to the hard drive size the ps3 can read?

I guess the PS3 can do a max of 1TB HDD.

I was only kidding. I quoted killersquirel and said that as a joke.

I know, but from most of the research I've done there is a bit of truth to most 500GB HD's in a PS3.. The Samsung models seem to be the least "problematic".

Follow up question.........

If the hard drive has nothing to do with the PS3
playing PS2 games, then why is it that only the
60 gig units play PS2 games?

60GB units are not the only ones that play PS2 games.

At launch both models (the 20 & 60 GB units) came with onboard PS2 graphic and CPU chips. That allows them to play about 90% of PS2 games.
With the next PS3 revision, they released an 80GB unit. This unit removed the EE (Emotion Engine/PS2 CPU), but left the GPU. Via software emulation the system is capable of playing +/- 80% of the games.

Every release since the 80GB unit has neither the CPU or GPU of the PS2 in it. Thus, unless Sony makes some form of total PS2 emulation, no further PS3 in their current states can or ever will play PS2 games.

Adding on to G00ber's post, you actually can save your data if you have an external hard drive. Simply plug it in and run the backup utility. I'd assume it is probably a good idea to deactivate all accounts on your PS3 as well. I think it does activate by serial number, but it's better to be safe than sorry.

Also, do not get rid of your original hard drive! You will need it if you ever have to return your PS3 to Sony. Many people recommend encasing it, essentially turning it into an external hard drive, but I've found that its not really worth it for the price today. At least when compared to external hard drives.

I guess the PS3 can do a max of 1TB HDD.

Actually, you can run a 2TB 3.5" drive fine. Run SATA cables from the internal connector to the external drive (preferably in an enclosure) and you're ready to go.

For replacements, just about any 2.5" laptop SATA drive (regardless of RPM) will work. If you have the money and you don't keep a bunch of things on your HD, you might want to get a SSD instead for the faster loading drives.

Sony sells systems by HD sizes because people generally like bigger numbers. There's not a huge cost difference between a 160gb and 320gb drive (their current models), but they can sell the 320gb system for $100 more because people will buy it. Everything else on those two systems are identical minus the packaging.

As Papastu said, HD size has nothing to do with PS2 compatibility. Just pop in a new drive and you'll be fine.

It's kinda hard to get at the connector. Does any one make an adaptor that fits in the HDD bay and runs the SATA and power connectors to the side?
If not, maybe I should build one...

When I did the mod for my friend, I disassembled the PS3 and connected the wires that way. A LOT easier to do, especially with my large fingers.

I modified the enclosure he had a bit and mounted the enclosure to the side of the case when everything was working. Looks real nice, I think I have some pictures somewhere. But to my knowledge, there is no kit. You'll have to DIY it, but it's a simple mod to do.
