I was looking through Amazon and posted Chrono Trigger. Then I did a double take looking at the cover because I actually thought about it.

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51iThGjmvKL._SL500_AA300_.jpg

Chrono Trigger has been out such a long time but I've never stopped and thought about this. It never even crossed my mind actually. When does Marle ever use fire magic. It obviously isn't ice. It could be aura magic but then why would Crono be jumping towards the enemy as an attack?

What other games have people seen the box art that happened to be incorrect from what is shown in game? Not talking about stuff like Mega Man's western artwork, but stuff like Legendary Axe 2 where the sword is the default weapon(though you can get other weapons, one being an axe) and then the box art looks to be otherwise(except the Japanese box art where the guy is holding a sword.)

I remember boxart for some NES game, might have been wizards and warriors, where the main character looked totally different from the in game sprite.

Um, isn't that the case with most games? :P

You're just noticing that now? I think I bitched about that to my teenage friends 15 years ago. ;) Just a guess here, but maybe the game's artwork was designed before the game was completed and they just used that particular image. That, or people were too lazy to check for "flaws" on the box art.

I always thought that the illustration was correct, simply portraying one of the combination-techs (Arc Impulse maybe...? I can't remember).

I know Iron Sword - Wizards & Warriors 2 it has a picture of Fabio, or someone similar to Fabio, wielding a sword, but in game the character is in armor. Is that what you're referring to?

I remember reading an article about the Chrono Trigger art and there is actually a reason behind it but I can't remember it now! :-/

It's hard to beat Phalanx. Still, that's more of an artistic expression than an incorrect depiction of the game. I actually like the cover of Phalanx.

Earthbound

http://cdn1.gamepro.com/box/box_128241.jpg

As far as we can tell, the Starmen are human-height, not Gundam-size. The cover shows Ness inside the "cockpit" of one, like it's a mecha.

The Dig

http://img218.imageshack.us/img218/5300/dig300mc0.jpg

What's that tool they're digging with? It must be from back when the game actually had something to do with digging, as we all know the cover art was painted early on, and they just airbrushed out poor Toshi Olema.

Ultima III: Exodus

http://www.ultima.rabbitslair.de/pics/ultima3_title.jpg

The demon on the cover is not in the game, from what I understand. The actual antagonist is more akin to a computer.

King's Quest

Hey Kuo, it's a bonus. Like all those in-production screenshots on the back of every copy of Goldeneye. (At least the first run ones.)

I like to think of covers as the place where everything that can't or shouldn't happen gets a chance. Like the cover of Resident Evil Outbreak, with the guy passing the gun to another through the manhole.

.

That was the point . Exodus was Mondain and Minax's evil offspring that you set out to destroy. They didn't want you to know it was a demonic supercomputer churning out monsters. That was the big spoiler when you storm Exodus' Castle, and get to the end and realize its a supercomputer.

in any event, the thing on the cover resembles the balrons you fight in like every Ultima.

Deadly Towers boxart fucking lied so hard. The box art is cooler than anything the game could possibly have.

I'm pretty sure it's Ness's reflection on a Starman visor, as he's looking up at it from below. He is a kid, and the Starmen are not really ever shown in a particular "they are this tall" sort of reference shot either. Plus that's a high-level Starman, maybe it's extra tall.

That's the North American box, it clearly shows the Metal Gear tank on the front but that was removed from the NES version of the game.

Wait a minute, you mean to say that the Metal Gear isn't actually in the NES version of Metal Gear? Sorry, the game's hard, I never actually got to the end of it.

As for box art, I have to point out Demon Sword for the NES. The box shows this big, musclebound, Conan-looking western warrior. When you turn the game on your character and the actual game setting are very very eastern, with a lot of running and jumping through the trees a la Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

Yeah, Metal Gear was in the MSX version but not in the NES version. I didn't beat it either, but I watched reviews of the game which compared the different versions. I honestly can't stand the NES Metal Gear games.

This reminds me of the Hercules: The Legendary Journey's box art. He's holding sword against the three-headed Hydra and neither are in the game.

I remember when I wsa a kid all we had to go by was the cover art. No internet, not a lot of video game magazine where I was from. Besides I didn't know english either. And the box is in english. I took the decision to ask for a based solely on the box art. Most frustrating games where those were it looked like a racing game or a fighting game and it turned to be something different. I remember I could never play Rambo 3 when I got it for christmas I didn't udnerstand it was a light gun game. But give me a break I was 4.

Yeah, Demon Sword is the second Legend of Kage game, basically. I guess the first one didn't do well so they completely hid the Eastern origins in the U.S.

Looks like Zan from the Wonder Twins hitting a guy with a giant apple while Karnov is about to smack somebody with a shovel. That box art is amazingly awesome.

Mobile Light Force 1 + 2.Dear GOD! You know how many people must have overlooked those games because of that HORRIBLE grossly inaccurate Charlie's Angels-esque box art? I was one of them, for years.

What was the marketing team THINKING?! It's like there job was to make sure the games failed as miserably as possible.
