I was thinking of maybe trying out some of those more quirky PAL titles we didn't get. Pop'n Twinbee, The Firemen, or something. Depends on reviews/etc.

I'm using one with s-video support and already has its tabs removed for JPN games. Done the ugly way, as if that matters. It isn't visible as long as there's a game inside or the door flap is up.

Will those many poorly converted games that were slower on PAL systems, run at 60hz on mine? Do I need an adapter to defeat lockout to play any game, or will some just run nicely?

I haven't heard much info about this subject. From the looks of things, PAL imports are way more popular to do on Genesis than SNES.

I've heard of converters that let you play PAL games on a US SNES, but I don't even think that they're 100% compatible with every game. The best way is to have your SNES modded with a 50/60hz and region lockout on/off switch. I believe all PAL games check the region of the SNES (unlike JP games), but some go even further and check if the region lockout is disabled. If it is, then the game won't work. But the mod will let you get around that.

If you're really interested in playing imports from all regions, this is the best way to. I actually purchased a modded SNES off of this forum for a good price not too long ago and I know somebody on the NA forums was selling one too. The only PAL game you need to worry about is Terranigma; those other ones you mention have a JP release and are perfectly playable on your system already.

Unfortunately you'll need a converter or 50/60hz switch if you want to play the PAL versions of Pop'n Twinbee and Pop'n Twinbee: Rainbow Bell Adventure. Once the game is loaded though you can switch it back to 60hz and it'll play just fine.

The Firemen, however, does not have any PAL protection. The PAL version of Parodius is the same way. Just pop them in and play.

I'm also unaware of any specific PAL carts that check if the region lockout is disabled.

Street Fighter Alpha 2 checks for the lockout chip.

its called the honeybee convertor, if you can find one, they are rare as hell.....and not every game will work of course.

This isnt correct, some PAL games check, not all, although those ones do check region and lockout. Out of the 200 or so pal games I own only a handful lock if I have my console set to 60hz and they are usually the same games that do lock up in reverse, ie an ntsc game on a pal machine, Super Street Fighter II, Street Fighter Alpha 2, Samurai Showdown and Konami games made after Super Castlevania IV are some to name a few.

My bad...the only PAL game I own is Terranigma, but I've heard that all PAL games check for the lockout. Anyways, hope all this info is helpful, OP!

Yeah. It's just due to a simple lack of interest from the community. Testing compatibility isn't difficult, but time consuming and expensive to obtain the games.
