Acclaim Shuts Down Games After Playdom Transition

Acclaim, the shuttered classic game maker reborn in 2005 as an online game company, shut down the vast majority of its online games Thursday, according to the company's website.

They were only with Playdom for 3 MONTHS! Oh well, it wasn't the first time the company went under, but this might be for good.

None of those were released by this Acclaim (in name only). This Acclaim was a poor online company that didn't really ever do much of anything.

No sadness from me on this re-loss.

If having the Acclaim name was the biggest thing this company had going for them, then it's no surprise they went bust.

Lesson to be learned. If you're going to sign up for an MMO and devote lots of time and money to it, make sure it's being run by a stable company.

Not that I knew anyone who played these MMOs. I've never even heard of them before.

I know right. The only things I can associate Acclaim and quality with is their mid-90's to early 2000's publishing partnership with Taito and funding Criteron's Burnout franchise.

Acclaim didn't always suck. There are plenty of quality 8 and 16 bit games with their logo on the box.

It wasn't until the ps2 era, when they marginalized themselves by making nothing but games based on licensed franchises that truly started churning out nothing but shit.

What's really shocking to me is that THQ is still around, and actually doing well at this time. When they formed, just about everything they released was garbage. Now they've apparently got some decent ips. Go figure.

Acclaim truly did have some sucky games, but I will always have fond memories of some of the things they published (although maybe not developed). Wizards & Warriors and Mortal Kombat didn't = suckitude, in my book.

They published the Phantasy Star Collection for gba, for one thing. They've also got some PC games and Warhammer 40K games that have been rather highly regarded by the press. In fact, I'm sure I actually picked up something recently that I was shocked to discover was published by THQ. Odd, indeed.

I did a Revolution X Google image search, and found that image amusing. I was trying to further prove the fail of Acclaim. Combining it with the fail of the 32X, maybe this was a good thing that it didn't get a release.

I just don't understand how they got to release so many games that were developed by other companies like Sega and Capcom. Why in the hell wouldn't those companies just publish the games themselves? Pity?
