You think it can be hacked where you can put in a PS2 game , copy it to the hard drive and then burn it on the dvd burner. :D
And the price hasn't been announced or even suggested. Most guesses put it around $599

NOT "right from Sony," but from an unnamed (fictional?) Sony rep who spoke to a website called, God help me, "Action4Life." Sony has not yet officially announced a price point for the PSX.

Are you talking about the " interview " with the " Sony Representative " . If so , that isn't an official price from Sony , it's just a rumor as the article mentions. If you're talking about something from the Official Sony site, sorry I didn't see anything there.

I think it could sell decently. What do you think a 120GB Tivo w/ built in DVD-r would sell for, even it couldn't play games? I don't want one, but there's definitely a market for this type of high-end system.

Agreed. A lot of gamers don't seem to understand that the PSX is quite specifically NOT targeted at them. It's a high-end TV set-top gizmo being sold by Sony's home-electronics branch, not a game system being sold by Sony Computer Entertainment. (Of course, the PSX is also undoubtedly a PS3 technology testbed, but hey.)

Exactly Zach, they aren't looking for profit or praise on this machine, they're looking to see who buys it, what it can do, and how to make the PS3 more like the Xbox.

And why exactly do they want it to be like the XBOX? :hmm: Seems to me like the PS2 is doing much better than the XBOX.

If this system is a test bed for the PS3 and the PS3 is build anything like this, I'm pretty sure Sony can shove there newest over hyped machine up their collective ass.

The reason the Xbox sucks is because the games suck, and well the system sucks too... but if my PS2 had a hard drive with my own soundtrack for a load of games, I'd really enjoy it. It's really not a bad idea, Xbox, to me, was just poorly executed. That's why Sony is toying around with the PSX, to see what they do and don't want to put into the PS3.

And another PSX thread quickly degenerates into nonsense.
I'm fascinated by the ever-increasing hatred of Sony in the gaming community. It's become like hating the Lakers. Americans can tolerate someone or something that's successful -- but it can't be too successful, and not for too long, or the resentment and anger kicks in. Is there anyone on this board who wants to see Sony "three-peat" with the PSX and "four-peat" with the PSP? All the bitter fanboys who've watched Sony drive Nintendo into a corner and drive Sega out of the hardware business are aching for Sony to flop.
Was Nintendo as despised at its peak as Sony is right now? (According to the book "Game Over," pretty close, but I'd love to read the perceptions of people who were actively gaming during that era.) And was Atari as despised at its peak? Like, did Intellivision and ColecoVision gamers curse the Atari name as much as Nintendo and Microsoft fans curse Sony? Were they rooting for Atari to fail, and did they cheer when Atari augured in?

The Xbox's hard drive is a wonderful feature -- custom soundtracks, saving without Memory Cards, and downloading "new" content (which is really just content withheld from the retail release, but hey) are all good things. I was dubious about the HD at first, but that's because I'm an old bastard who fears change. My only concern is not being able to back up the saves and content (without modding your Xbox, of course), but the PSX's DVD-R drive should be able to address that particular issue.

Dammit, now I'm going to be forced into calling the original PlayStation the PS1. I've refused to call it that and have always, until now, called it the PSX.
Damn you Sony and your unoriginal names!!!

I like the design, myself. Sure, it's a square, but it's a silver, compact, sleek square. I have no intentions of buying a PSX, but I do like the fact that Sony took it's Playstation 2 console and added some nice, new features to it.
One thing I need someone to explain is the console position. The pictures make it look like the PSX stands upright, but then other pictures show it resting on its pegs. So, now someone has to plug the controllers into the back of the unit? I'm guessing Sony didn't want ports messing up the aesthetics of their sleek little box.

I've noticed that too. I don't have anything against Sony, Microsoft, or Nintendo. I just like to see companies make consoles. I'm more into the aesthetics and construction of hardware... oh yeah, the games too. As for the Lakers, to hell with'em.

I always thought 'PS1' was the abbreviation for the PSOne (the second, smaller Playstation). The original Playstation needs its own abbreviation. How about 'PS'? No, 1 or X. Just... 'PS'. :D

I think this is a stupid idea. it just makes your controller cables that much shorter... (watch for them to start selling controller extension cables soon ;-D ) If they were so concerned about aesthetics, why couldn't they just put the ports up front behind a flip-down door like some high end audio/video products? I guess its because that would make too much sense... Also, was there anything mentioned about placement of the memory ports? Hope you don't have to reach around the back for those as well...

Oh, I completely agree, but many gamers who can only afford to purchase one system will seemingly invest their very souls into that system, even defining themselves by their choice. (There's a poster on here called "Dreamcaster," for example.) Which is fine -- many sports fans do the same thing -- but it's not behavior to which I can relate.

No memory ports. You'll use the hard drive for saves , or the Sony Memory Stick.

Solid Bet: There are two versions of the PS3 - one that's like the "new" PS2 (with the bundled network gear and built in remote reciever) and another high-end PS3 with the Tivo and top-notch DVD and all that. It only makes sense. Does the audiophile down the street listed to music on the same CD player the kid next door? Everyone gets what they want, and Sony appears as a more "grown-up" type of videogame company.
