Here is another classic that rocked the arcades back in the day.
The game itself is simple, or at least at the start of it it is. You start in 1910, in World War I, shooting biplanes that are slow and not very maneuverable. After a time, a parachuter comes from the side of the screen you're heading towards and then a warning usually sounds and then a formation comes out that you should shoot down. The Parachuter is a progressive bonus (I remember back in the day stalling the end of the level until I got one worth 5,000 points), and destroying the formation is always worth 2,000 points. After you shoot down 64 enemies (I believe), the mothership comes out in a big dirigible. Shoot that eight times and destroy it for 3,000 points, and then you warp ahead to 1940.
1940: You're in WWII now, with slightly more agile enemies in the form of Japanese Zeroes and small bombers worth 1,500 points. They're more accurate and numerous, and flying in one direction usually means they will eventually shoot you down or go kamikaze on you. Destroy the mothership in the form of a larger bomber, and its off to 'Nam, homeboy.
1970: Now things start to get complicated. You're attacked by helicopters and in addition to the normal shots, they start to use homing missiles against you. The one benefit is that they can be shot down. They can be avoided, but only with sharp, 90-degree turns. Destroy the transport helicopter mothership and move on.
1982: Its getting really hard now. You're up against fighter jets that are almost as fast and quick as you are, and they're much more accurate with their shots, and they have homing missiles as well. You cannot stay moving in one direction for long, in fact constant movement is the only way to stay alive on this level. Shoot down the jet bomber to move on.
2001: I can never see this level without smirking a little bit, because its not. But the action is serious here. The flying saucers move in almost random directions, shooting semi homing missiles and shots. The good thing is that both of these can be shot down, but the bad news is that while trying to avoid shots coming at you, its too easy to run into a saucer. Shoot down the flying saucer mothership, and it starts all over again, just harder.
