View Full Version : Modern Hardware/Accessory Grails?

Hey gang,
I'm drawing a blank. I'm writing a small column on "grails" but this is a hardware edition. I'm good with older stuff but I'm havnig some trouble coming up with at least one item that would be considered highly sought after for PlayStation, GameCube, Xbox, or PS2. It should be a domestic (USA) release and not a prototype or one-of-a-kind, just something "very hard to find and probably worth something".

Thoughts?

I would've said the Rez vibrator but I think that's not a domestic release. The Steel Battalion controller might count on some level...not hard to find, but prohibitively expensive for most of us.

Would the DC broadand adapter qualify?
They all shipped w/ modems, but the broadband adapter is much less common.
Not sure about practicality, since most DC servers are down now, but thats an idea.
What about console variations?
The different Dreamcast variations, the GC variations?

Beyond that I can't think of anything either.

Well, recently in the buy/sell forums, the PSX 1-handed controller was being asked for, but I have no clue how rare it is, I just happened upon one.

How about the official Sega Maracas? Those were released here, but were expensive and very hard to find...

How about that Net Yaroze playstation? That's pretty cool and hard to find.

Apparently the reason they were hard to find is because one guy on ebay hijacked every truck that carried those things. I swear I've never seen so many "New sealed!" auctions for one thing in my life.

The 1-handed RPG controller and the Steel Batalion panel are the only other things that come to mind.

1-handed RPG Controler? x_x

WTF?

Well I have a semi-modern thing. Pelican controller for the NES. While the controller is for an older system, it was put out in 2000 making it modern at the same time.

Ah, yes, ASCII's (now Agetec) "The Grip." Developed for Japanese RPG fans, who smoke like chimneys, so they could hold their cigarettes with their free hand. So I was told by ASCII at the time, anyway. It's also obviously a great peripheral for amputees.

That would make a great "fake Ebay auction". That controller shipped with DOA Volleyball.

Damn the contest was ages ago.

The one handed controller was originally marketed so the RPGer could draw maps with one hand while naviagting the game with the other. However, sales didn't take off until scantly clad Final Fantasy female characters came into the frey. It seems that many lonely RPGers had a better use for that second hand than drawing maps.

;)

The Playstation trackball and mouse aren't seen too often and there was a strange 3rd party controller called the ORB 3D which had a run of 10k or less.

Also Lightspan sent out a PS1 mouse/keyboard adapter to schools so that a keyboard and mouse could be used with some of the titles. Its an official Sony released item and each one I've found is numbered. Not sure if that counts as its wasn't publicly released.

What about that exercise bike thingy for the SNES?

Well its N64 but it might count.

A few years ago Nintendo Power had that mail order for the exclusive Donkey Kong controller. It was the yellow one with all three of the handle tips on the controller that were painted like bannana ends. And it had that Donkey Kong logo on the front.

Too bad you're only on the modern systems, or else I'd nominate the "Puffer" bike for the 5200. LOL

The only hardware grail I still seek is an import, though - it's that damn Namco paddle controller pictured in the Namco Museum 2 JP manual. I saw one on eBay a few months ago, and stared in a stupor as I was outbid to the tune of something like $50 for it.

One item I used to see fairly often that I haven't seen for quite a while is the Negcon controller for the PSX. It's sort of a weird, twisty driving controller. Hardly a "holy grail" though.

I have an RC-type racing controller for the PSX that I don't see much anymore. Ditto for the Blaze Twin Shock joystick, although I picked up another one at Phillyclassic for $20.

I once had a PSX light gun that could be accessorized with a mounted laser sight. I never found the laser sight though. I wonder what happened to that gun.

I had a helluva time tracking down the 3DO Gamegun. For less than $80, that is. Ahh but you didn't ask about 3DO.

Did the Dreamcast DVD player ever see the light of day?

Now I've never seen this, other than the one time that I bought it. Searches on eBay reveal nothing, but it may because I don't know it's proper name...

It's a PS1 dual flight stick. Big flat base, two flight sticks. Looks to be a dual shock vesion.

Anyone?

And the GC modem/broadband adaptors may be slightly harder to find, at least for the time being.

My local Gamestop has had one of those sitting around for a while. Mad Catz, right?

Ive got one of those :) and yes it was bloody hard to find :)

Infact almost all the hardware parts you guys are listing are far from rare, perhaps US rare but deffinately not rare, i see almost all of the items your listing on my weekly travels. i guess with hardware its actually the same world wide? is a negcon controller or flight stick released in the US is the same as in NZ or AUS or the UK? Maybe some packaging difference?

I have a few that I can think of....Remember the R4 racing controller...(Playstation)...man that took off the skin! Modem connections for Gamecube
are HTF, The fighting master arena for Playstation(for Tekken 3), Also the chrome arcade sticks for dreamcast(HTF). Does that help????(I have the Fighting master arena up for grabs, if you want one!!!)

maybe a couple that are hard to find:

PSX Flight stick (I forget the brand, I'll check when I go home next week, it's a gray single stick flight controller with hat triggers, etc.)...I've only seen this once, and I bought it.

PSX Tekken 2 arcade stick (Namco)

PSX trackball

N64 Gold 1st party controller

PSX Ascii one hand controller

PSX link cable

Speaking of hard-to-find PSX accessories, has anyone else seen this one?

It was a device that looked like a portable floppy drive, and used floppy discs as a replacement to memory cards. You plugged this thing in, and saved your saved games on a floppy instead of a memory card. You could save a couple hundred saves on one disc, and transfer them back and forth to your PC for unlimited storage.

It was NOT a Dex Drive, and the device itself did not hook up to a PC. I have no idea what the name was, but it cost about $80 at Electronics Boutique (as it was called then, it was that long ago) and when I went to get it a few days later it was gone. Never seen it since, on ebay or any other store.

What was that PSX dual stick designed for? I picked one up a couple of years back, but I've never even used the thing yet. It's freaking huge though, I can tell you that much.

IIRC, it was either for Ace Combat or Armored Core. I have neither, so I can't test it out properly.
