My slim PSP UMD drive still works but it makes a grinding/high pitched scratching sound now. It really sucks because I was just about to start a new game of Star Ocean Second Evolution and as soon as I heard that I powered off the system and took it out, tested it with a game I dislike.

So I put in GTA Liberty Shitty Stories(hate this game.) During segments where it loads from the UMD it has a sort of screeching noise. I played 20 minutes to see if maybe it would fix itself to no avail.

Previously I was playing Half Minute Hero. Whenever I was done I'd put the system on sleep. Turn it back on and pick up where I left off. Maybe this is what caused the issue? When I put in Star Ocean, I didn't realize I put Half Minute Hero on sleep and didn't turn it off so I powered it off since the Star Ocean UMD was inside. Then powered on and it started making that sound when loading.

I went to playstation.com about repairs and holy hell they charge out the ass. $90. I don't know anything about repairing it, but I know that the system is small, being the disc drive it'd probably take them 5 minutes or so. That's half the cost of a new PSP and they're already making money off the games I buy.

I'll ask a mod to move this to technical and restoration sometime later, but currently I just wanted to complain about it. It's my favorite current gen system and it's a Japanese only color so I'm going to have to get it fixed. Also, while I'm against it because it's not using the physical format to play, once I get my PSP fixed I may use the UMD drive to just rip the games to my PSP and them play them from a memory stick from now on. Increase the drives lifespan.

Sounds like a plan. As long as you just rip your own UMDs then the physical format thing shouldn't be an issue really. It's just the same as a backup.

Optical drives in handhelds are like life-vests on a space station IMO.

Even if it's out of warranty, you could always try to fight your way into a free repair. I managed to do just that with my 2 1/2-year-old DS -- it had started to shut itself off intermittently and the left shoulder button was barely responding. I had to call and send a few emails and all, and I managed to convince them to give me the repair for free. So I sent it via registered mail ($10) and two days later got it back... it was not my DS, but another one. :)

In any case, good luck in getting your PSP serviced!
