When a new game hasn't been released yet on Gamestop, it says "ships on" a certain date. Does that mean I can go to the store that date and pick up a copy or do I have to wait a day? I called my Gamestop and no one picked up. I think they're closed for the day. Thanks!

A "Ship" date usually means the date it ships from the warehouse. Unless it's a big release, it's usually available at the store 1-3 days later.

What would they consider NHL 11 as?

It's the day after in most every case.

NHL 11 will be available on Tuesday, its sitting in the back room of the Gamestop I work at today.

Yeah, EA sports games, super-huge sellers (WWE and Sony), and anything with a midnight launch will ship early (arrive before the weekend). Everything else will be in Wednesday morning.
Ordering from Amazon sometimes puts the game in your hands on a Tuesday, though.

I learned my lesson from that with Dawn of War 2. If Amazon does not explicitly say when they are taking pre-orders that you can get it the day-of, even if you do the best shipping possible, you may not get it the day of.

If the date given is not a Tuesday then it's most likely not the "for sale" date.
- I've had the same problems with Amazon. Even if you pre order and get the regular 2-5 day shipping, the chances of game arriving on release date is unreliable at best. Now they're starting a 99 cent "guranteed release day arrival" on all pre orders now. Kind of a decent deal. it's not the free shipping but on the other hand it's not the 2-5 day shipping that cost $3.99 and with the deals Amazon has, it's typically worth it for the bigger releases.

GameStop is doing a midnight release for NHL 11 (in some stores). Check to see if your local store is partaking in it at gamestop.com.
Big releases will be in stores on the 22nd. Other smaller releases will normally be in by Thursday.
