View Full Version : Broken NES Arkanoid controller or me being an idiot?

Just picked up an Arkanoid controller today for the NES, and it appears dead. No matter what controller port I plug it into, it doesn't work, not the button and not the spinner, either. Is it dead, or am I just being an idiot? I'm asking this as I don't have an original Arkanoid cartridge, but rather a pirate cart with Arkanoid on it. Would that mean anything?

EDIT: Just answered my own question. I tried to run the American and Japanese versions of Arkanoid on an emulator, and the Japanese version will not recognize input from the Arkanoid controller using the standard NES controller ports, but rather from the Famicom's expansion port. It seems the Japanese version is on my pirate cart, so I can't use the controller unless I get a US Arkanoid cartridge or find a way to make the Arkanoid controller work on a US NES with a Japanese version of Arkanoid. Anyone know how a Japanese Arkanoid controller works compared to a US Arkanoid controller?

The pirate-cart versions are probably Japanese versions hacked to work with the pad, and won't work with the US controller, as you found.

Anyone have the pinout of the Famicom expansion port and know what pins the Famicom Arkanoid controller uses?
