Ack! Your list does not have one of the best games of all time!

I will give you a hint. He looks like the dead guy to the left.

Ooh! That reminds me, I had made a plea for Venture to be added a while back!

Fantastic music, great characters, and a port of the coin-op that actually (subtly) improves upon the original.

Let's add Venture and drop... maybe Pac-Man, since great versions of it are on so many other platforms.

I'd also love to see Looping on the list, but acknowledge that I'd never convince anyone to drop another title that's already there :)

I would replace Time Pilot with Lord of the Dungeon.

i agree with Venture....That is a damn good game. but i dont think pac man should be taken out... personally, ive always thought time pilot was weak- but i dont really like star fortress either.
time pilot is definetely my least favorite on that list though.

@Willie - I agree that Time Pilot's very weak - it's just not up to snuff, graphically or playwise, with the other fine ColecoVision ports. I definitely support dumping Time Pilot from the list.

OK, now that I can talk in more than one syllable, I would really like to see Jumpman Jr. added to that list. Some suggestions as to what I would remove:
Donkey Kong Jr.
Tarzan
Time Pilot
Turbo

Well I don't expect too many people would support adding Lord of the Dungeon, but seems Venture and Jumpman Jr are good additions, so how does this proposal sound:

DROP: Time Pilot and Pac-Man
ADD: Venture and Jumpman Jr.

Yes? I'd second this motion.

I'll second that e-motion! (E for electronic!)

Hi everyone

Finally registered with DP today, and I couldn't resist joining in this little debate ...

I think it's a great list with just a couple of exceptions.

I think that Frogger and Q*Bert certainly belong on a Colecovision Top 20 list. They are probably the best conversions of these 2 arcade classics on any classic era console. To fit them in, I would take out Tarzan and Turbo, neither of those games does much for me.

Also, while I love both Donkey Kong and Donkey Kong Jr, I would personally prefer the original to be on the list, as this was THE game that helped the Colecovision make a big impact when it was launched. I, like a lot of other people, was amazed at how good a console game could be when I first saw it. It was such a big advance over 2600 games when it came out.

Cheers

The list is looking much better now, IMO though I would also agree with flicky here.

i simply cannot agree with dropping pac man in favor of jumpman junior.
colecovision pacman is one of the best versions outside of the arcade machine.
i would be fighting joust if it had sound... even without sound that game is a definite contender. ill just keep my one complaint at pacman for now though.

CBS Victory!

I'm not quite sure what it would replace, though. Mr. Do! does feel like a rather rushed game, I suppose.

I would add Frogger and Matt Patrol and drop Dig-Dug and Mr Do!. Both Frogger and Matt Patrol are outstanding achievements. It's a shame the real Moon Patrol port isn't available... yet... ;)

Take out Star Fortress and add in Space Invaders Collection... it's a much smoother, more accurate arcade translation.
Also, I'd swap out Dig Dug (which was kinda flickery and ugly) and replace it with one of Atarisoft's other games, perhaps Joust, Pac-Man, Moon Patrol, or Galaxian. What the heck, put 'em all in and give the old heave ho to Donkey Kong Jr., Mr. Do!, Venture, and Jumpman Jr.

Yeah, Mousetrap should be there. It makes very good use of the number keypad, and is a really, really nice port of the arcade game.

Not a knock at KevTris at all, but maybe it should be bumped in favor of Mousetrap? Mousetrap just takes better advantage of the CV's capabilities.

Venture needs to stay put. :-D

thats a great game not derived from an arcade title, a true coleco creation not on anyother system. it belongs on the list, just for being so different and addicting.

I would still argue for Lord of the Dungeon. Aside from the fact that it is a really good game, you cannot possibly play it and not consider what "might have been."

In those days, video console RPGs had to be designed in such a way that they could be completed in no more than a few hours. This meant that the level of complexity had to be, by necessity, severely limited. There was no way you were ever going to get a game as complex as Ultima or Wizardry on any home video system. As a result, this was an area in which computers clearly dominated; videogame systems couldn't possibly match them.

But Lord of the Dungeon, had it been widely released, would've changed that in 1983. This was the first game you could switch off, and then pick up where you left off at some future time. As a result, the level of complexity could be far greater, as the normal time limit no longer applied. The one big advantage computer RPGs had was no more. It's not like 16K vs. 48K, as this was something completely new in home videogaming.

As it was, Lord of the Dungeon actually plays like a simplified Wizardry. No locked doors or treasure chests, no little traps, no alignments (although there may well be a final purpose!)... But this was a first-time effort. It does just what it is supposed to do. Now, this game would've flown off of the shelves faster than the NES Double Dragon or Super Mario Bros. 3. This would've meant a sequel of some sort. A more complex sequel, maybe even Questron or Ultima 1, 2, or 3? It may well have saved American videogaming.

I still think Dig-Dug isn't the most represenative game in the Atarisoft lineup. Matt Patrol or Galaxian (an commercialy released game) are far better efforts.

Some changes have been made here, dropping some games that I never thought should be on the list in the first place, personally (like Star Fortress and KevTris which are both good games but not top 20).

I might just bump this to top 25. Seems like Wargames has been mentioned at least twice... if not 25 then what game do you think needs to be dropped from this list?

i dont see how space invaders collection can be added right now- almost no one has access to it, i dont think its right to add yet....i mean, how many people that contributed to this list have put in a lot of hours on it?

i think that

montezumas revenge
q*berts qubes
and
zaxxon

deserve to be on there- for one thing qberts qubes is a good variation of qbert that was never properly done on any other home console. montezumas revenge had excellent reaction to joystick and button commands and played really well (and fast)- and zaxxon was and is one of the nicer pre-84 console versions to play.

if i had to vote anything from the list to be removed i would say:

frenzy
ms. space fury
space invaders collection

I defintely think that Zaxxon and Galaxian are deserving of the top 20. For the time (and even now)Zaxxon was a great port. But the game I would put at #1 would be Ladybug, I never played it in the arcade but was instantly hooked.

I agree. Frenzy is a better game than Berzerk but that's not saying much. They both get old real fast. I've played Ms. Space Fury. Either you're supposed to be floating in zero gravity or else this game moves r e a l l y s l o w. It's cute but it didn't seem like that much fun to play. SI collection isn't even out. I'd kick off Steamroller as well in favor of War Games or Mountain King. How many people here besides Joe own this game or have even played it or seen it in action?

digitalpress

I kinda agree about Space Invaders Collection, but it will be available soon - and everyone who tested and played the game agrees it's just an incredible piece of work. Let's keep that there for now because I just *know* that by the years' end we'll be clamoring to put it back on!

Ms. Space Fury is slow, eh? Well the "dropping" is slow, you ARE in low gravity (the manual is available online which explains this). It's also a VERY important factor when playing the two-player version of the game - which, by the way, you cannot judge the title overall without playing. Ms. Space Fury IS a multi-player game, the 1-player version was added in later because we had the space to do so!

Play head-to-head and you'll get a whole new appreciation of Bienvenu's work. Kind of like Bomberman where you simply have to fuck over the other guy as much as you can. And, like Bomberman, the 1-player game isn't why people put it in the Top 20.

I'm not a fan of ColecoVision Mountain King. It's so... blah compared to the gorgeous 8-bit and 5200 game and even the 2600 version has a better feel. Believe me, I'm a fan of the game, but the Sunrise port of it, YUCK.

Do not speak ill of Opcode's or newcoleco's games. Blasphemy. A pox on you. Shame on you! Bad-bad-bad! Booo!

Seriously- If the Space Invaders Collection is an early example of what Opcode can do, just imagine what he'll do once he has gotten in some experience...

And as soon as I can purchase a copy of newcoleco's Bejeweled, and have played it a bit, I'll do a review. As if that'll be necessary.

So far, homebrewers have given us games that are better than 65, 70% of "official" ColecoVision games. Space Invasion against Time Pilot or Subroc is a good example.

Zaxxon
03-02-2003, 03:15 PM
"Space Invasion against Time Pilot or Subroc is a good example."

Aswald, have you ever played Super Subroc? In that version you can submerge and fight against subs, avoid mines and depth charges, dodge torpedoes fired at you. There's a lot more to do and avoid.

steamroller is one of the best games i think... i really doubt if that one will ever get booted from the list.
in my opinion it is the best colecovision only game that you can buy
plus 2 player simultaneous is awesome

Aswald
03-03-2003, 03:19 PM
No, I'm afraid that I've only gotten one emulator properly (more or less) running: it's at Daniel Bienvenu's website, and it plays a set list of games (such as Galaxian and Tutankham). Unfortunately, there isn't any sound here...

I've never played Super Subroc, but the problem with the "regular" Subroc is lousy collision-detection, jerky movement (especially when a torpedo is fired at you), poor graphics, and such. If these problems have been dealt with, then Super Subroc might be quite good. But is it available on cartridge for the ColecoVision? I assume that's a requirement here.

Steamroller should be on any Top 20 ColecoVision list. No question about it.

Lord of the Dungeon should, too; it has such excellent replay value on top of being the world's first battery-backed game! Imagine how well it would've sold to the Tunnels & Trolls-starved crowd back in 1983! If I can ever get Island of Foxes together (%&#*@!! Commodore 64!), and people approve of it, then maybe the list of CV RPGs can be expanded a bit more...Chateau Du Dragon?

Well one thing's for sure, being a landmark for a game system does NOT a top 20 list make. I mean you could say ColecoVision Donkey Kong should be on the list because it was the first ColecoVision game ever. Or that Super Action Baseball should be on the list because it was the first Super Action Controller game. Lots of landmark titles either do not stand the test of time or had their innovation quickly overshadowed by better games "borrowing" that innovation.

Aswald
03-03-2003, 03:50 PM
True, but I've had Lord of the Dungeon for a year now, and it's held up very well. It's simply a good game. If it didn't, then the fact that it's a battery-backed game would be meaningless.

Gus Gnoll the Versatile vs. 3 Necromancers! 20 Hit Points left...time for CUTLEVULEN!

What I see missing from the list are some of Coleco's creative games...

I loved 2010!! I thought it was very well done, but I like puzzle games a lot.

But, then again, I also loved Destructor and Evolution and stuff like that.:embarrassed:

Right now, I see a lot of ports from the system, and I know that there were a lot, but I think the list needs to recognize some diversity. Mr. Do is not in my top 20, and neither is Mr. Do's castle either...

Just my 2 cents.

Aswald
03-04-2003, 01:21 PM
Hmmm...good point. Maybe Fortune Builder should be on that list. It is an amazing game, especially since whatever you build actually has an effect on other things- for example, put an oil rig near a resort, and your tourist business will suffer, but if you put a marina near that resort instead, both will prosper. It was actually the ancestor to those Sim-games.

When two people play- yes, it has that option!- it gets pretty hilarious as you try to make money while sabotaging your opponent's efforts...such as sinking an oil rig near his resort...so he retaliates by "helping" you by putting an extra bridge near your ski lodge...and if he puts a toll booth there, well, hey, all's fair...

Uhm... I find DKJr's graphics really ugly. I still think DK is a better game, a little more polished, better graphics...
Mr Do! is another rough conversion. Anyway it's still more enjoyable than Mr. Do's Castle. I don't know... maybe Zaxxon would be a better option. I still play it a lot.
Tarzan is another rough game. I know, the game has variety and so but, man, everything is so choppy!
Two games still deserve to be in the list: Galaxian and Centipede. Both are very polished, enjoyable (try Centipede with the Roller Controller), and everything moves smoothly, which isn't this usual for a CV game.

Eduardo Mello

Aswald

Centipede plays great, but the graphics...bleah.

Opcode, I knew someone around here- and I live fairly close to Amsterdam, New York- who swears that he once had a "modified" Centipede that a Coleco programmer had cooked up. It was essentially the same, but it had much better graphics. Judging by the recent "finds" of the past few years- such as Lord of the Dungeon- I believe him. Also, he had absolutely no reason to lie about it.

Galaxian is certainly the best of the "original" Atarisoft games! Even the 10-screen flag is multi-colored, and the showing of the points you've earned when you shoot a Flagship is another good touch, like in Ladybug. There's really nothing not to like about it.

How about a least playable games list for CV? I'd vote for Up 'n Down. The controls are horrible IMO.

Those controls are HORRIBLE. I want to like the game, but can't. For 25 bucks, I don't want to watch it sit on my shelf, fo' shizzle.

Compare it to Frogger for example. Your frog goes where you want. That damned car, on the other hand, doesn't respond very well to diagonal movements, which as you know are abundant in the gameplay. My controllers work great, but the game responds poorly.

May I suggest a strong new candidate?: Pac-Man Collection. 8-)
You can now download the demo version here:
http://www.opcodegames.com/modules.php?name=Content&pa=showpage&pid=13

The demo version will allow you to play the first round of Pac-Man, complete with sound. And if you know any arcade pattern, please try with this version. ;)

To start a game, first place credits with "#" then press "1" or "2" for 1 or 2 players game respectively. I suggest running it with MESS.
The final version will include Pac-Man and Ms Pac-Man, beside a few surprises.
