Just saw this video and thought it was awesome.

Playing Different Game Systems Simultaneously (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hGdKkf12_Lc)

Ever wondered if you were to sync up Mario on the NES with the All-Stars version on the SNES if it would stay in sync when played together? How identical are the games, really?

133MHzz here made a quick mod that took the inputs from one controller and split them to an NES and a SNES with the Mario games playing and the results are pretty cool to watch. I was surprised at how close they really are, as I've always thought All-Stars seemed a bit "off" physics-wise

That's awesome! I love wacky comparisons like this.

Nice! Pretty cool. I enjoyed the comparison. Cool idea.

its weird how the nes version is slightly faster at times (the gameplay on the nes schools the all stars version by leaps and bounds in my opinion)

If you want to get one that'd be hilariously inaccurate, try Genesis Sonic 1 with Sonic Genesis on the GBA.

(more legitly, though, the versions of Sonic games on Sonic Jam would make interesting comparison.)

Pretty interesting comparison. I've always heard people talking about the controls in All-Stars feeling different, but I've always felt that it's practically the same. I still feel the games on All-Stars are the best remakes ever made, not to mention the cart being the best value in gaming (even more so if you got the one with Super Mario World as well).

this is cool.

When it gets out of sync, it's hard to tell if it is due to programming differences or just slight errors with the controller setup.

There was one point where it seemed certain that one of the desyncs occured due to a change in the collision detection. )Where All-Stars Side got whacked by a pirhana in 1-2 where Original didn't, if I'm remembering correctly.)

It's possible the major of the desyncs, in fact, are due more to collection detection changes than anything else in particular.

I liked the comparison as well.

I have wondered about the differences between game types mainly between US/Japan and Europe. I have heard that if you play game A on country console B, for example, then it will run slow. Of course, each person views slow a little differently, but I was never quite sure what it meant, or it if really was noticeably different.

While not an apples to apples comparison, it does show that different games of different types do run differently. And basically what I thought, the difference is very small and basically unnoticeable. (Unless you are running them side-by-side!)

What you refer to is the difference between PAL and NTSC. To put it very simply: NTSC televisions (US/Japan) update the screen 60 times per second, while PAL televisions (Europe) only update 50 times per second. Unless the programmers specifically take this slower refresh rate into account, the PAL version of a game will run slower, since it it outputting 10 less frames per second than NTSC.

Super Mario All-Stars may have slightly different physics, but I think people overstated the differences a bit(especially compared to plenty of other ports) and they certainly never got in the way of my enjoyment of the game.

That's pretty cool. I tried that w/ a Virtual Boy controller a long time ago ( http://www.projectvb.com/mods/controllers/dual.html ), but there aren't many (any?) VB games that don't have a random element to them, so it really was pretty pointless. Plus, notice how he keeps everything in sync by waiting for both games to be ready, and running into pipes. If you can't do that, the games will get out of sync quite quickly (probably would even if they were both identical games, both on the NES).

It sorta reminds me of the Hori Game Repeater for the Famicom. I played with that a long time ago and remember how it never really worked well, because any change or minor loss of sync would make it completely useless from there on.

Reminds me of a video where some dude beat Mega Man X1 and X2 at the same time using one controller. I don't really feel like searching for it, but it was quite amazing. It was tool-assisted, of course, but amazing nonetheless.

He needs to get a repro of the Lost Levels on cart and test that one too. The physics are different from Mario 1.

The differences become extremely apparent when playing Lost Levels. The FDS version is *much* harder.
