It's been a long time coming but I finally got my hands on two classic arcade machines.

I bought one working (Galaxian) and the other was not (Missile Command) for 300$ for both. Both machines are complete but dirty and the Missile Command had not been turned on in over 10 years until yesterday.

What should I use to clean the side art on the machine without damaging what is already there? Also is there a method to remove rust from control panels and/or machine parts?

Congrats, those are two cool games to get off the bat.

I have yet to come across rust on my machines with metal control panels, so not much I can discuss on that topic other than there are some chemical agents at any home improve store and usually in your grocery. Look out for Calcium Lime Rust (C.L.R.) or a similar product, they aren't expensive. I don't think this would be a good solution if the damage is around artwork as then you may want to look at buying a replacement overlay after leveling the panel out and make it rust-free.

As for cleaning artwork a soft or light cleaning agent should be fine. Check out this page (http://www.gamestencils.com/index.php?sc_page=44) as it contains some products that may be helpful to keep an eye out for.

For your corroded/rusty metal: Eagle One Nevr-Dull Wadding Polish

It's the best. I use it on electronics (just polished a partially rusted audio receiver yesterday), household metals, and even the contacts on game cartridges to great success. Great stuff. Just wash your hands after using it.
