Is there a handheld unit besides a GP32 that can play nes/snes/genesis games? Thanks

The performance was fairly spotty on the DS emulators I've tried, but it's certainly less effort to get NES/SNES/Genesis roms going on a DS through a flash card than it is to set up custom firmware on a PSP. The PSP's pretty swanky for emulation on the go, though - it definitely gets my vote.

PSP definitely. Because of the powerful hardware it can run up to PSX and Neo Geo games perfectly, and you also get to play them in original resolution.

PSP is definitely the way to go

Yeah I didn't even have to mod my own PSP. I just went on craigslist and bought a different revision that was already modded by him. I use PSP 2000 to play real games and the PSP 1000 to play emulators. I noticed lag on Super Nintendo games though, does the PSP 2000 or higher have more RAM or something?

Personally, I've had bad experiences with PSP emulators. Obviously, you have to install custom firmware in order to run homebrew... but then you have to do funny things to get legitimate games to work properly (especially some of the newer games that require 6.20 and higher). Keeping up with all the hacks can be time consuming, because there doesn't seem to be any site that really keeps track of all the PSP happenings. The sites that ARE decent just link to each other and it's difficult to tell what versions are new and which are obsolete. Also, many of the emulators I've tried have been very buggy, with lots of random lockups and such.

I've had a far better experience with emulators on my GP2X. They don't really make the GP2X anymore (or the GP32), but the GP2X Wiz, Caanoo, and Dingoo are more powerful options anyways.

Has anyone hacked PSPGo yet? If so, is the emulation the same on "regular" PSP? That would be one slick handheld emulation machine!

Ze_ro is correct about the PSP emulation scene. You have to frequent these sites to really find out when new emulators come out as it's mostly difficult to find what you're looking for.

The two best in my opinion are www.psp-hacks.com and www.qj.net/psp.html.

QJ.net has a lot of news filtered in as well. PSP Hacks only posts homebrew. If you want the stuff earlier then you may as well frequent message boards and such, but if you don't mind getting it half a day later or sometimes a day or two later, you may as well just check out the sites themselves that add the information to them later.

One thing about QJ.net though is when searching for something specific it's much easier as long as you go to the downloads section. http://dl.qj.net/. In the bar where it says search for, click whatever, in this case PSP, and for SNES emulators, just typing in SNES gets the job done much easier. It will bring up anything that has SNES listed or SNES listed in the file description.

It shows that SNES Euphoria R4 was the most recently released SNES emulator. It's a good emulator, but it loads games extremely slowly and the one that I use is just as good so doesn't interest me. You'll want to get a SNES9X TYL version if you're interested in the one that I've had, but I can't tell you which since the code is all that's ever updated even when it's from different people.

Searching Genesis brings up the best SMS/GBC/Gamegear emulator called EmuMaster(created by Genesis Vids so that's why Genesis brings it up.) It also brings up the best Genesis/Sega CD emulator PicoDrive. Most Sega CD games run full speed on PicoDrive and I haven't played a Genesis game that hasn't worked, so I'm still on version 1.35b, though 1.51 says it has better compatibility. Last time I played Snatcher I beat it using PicoDrive on the PSP and even though there were some frame drops, it usually kept 60FPS even on shooting parts.

Last, if you're looking for GBA, either get gpSP Mod or Unnofficial gpSP. I'm using one of the test versions of Unnofficial gpSP kai, I think test 8.7. It's ran the best for me. The only GBA games that won't run full speed are the Golden Sun games(and on any GBA emulator other than gpSP Mod crashes whenever you get a water djinn making it technically unplayable, but sometimes Golden Sun will crash randomly on gpSP mod so it's a trade off) while Yggdra Union won't keep the save data once the game is reset so you're required to save using a save state. I play the PSP version of Yggdra Union anyways so it doesn't matter much.

There are other emulators such as CPS1, CPS2, and Neo Geo emulators made from one person. They all have adhoc compatibility and whether you're on adhoc(aside from sometimes needing to resync) or playing a game, it runs full speed. 2600 emulators, multiple NES emulators, only one of which will load the Chinese FF7 game, and Amiga emulators all run perfect. TG16 runs perfect with most of TG16CD running "good." Almost anything you'll want to play will work on the PSP.

Another thing Ze_ro mentioned too though. Getting new PSP games to work is a lot of trouble since there's no one creating new custom firmware. You have to download new hacks that allow you to player newer firmware games. Some won't work unless they're patched.

The conversations that my GP2X sparks up when I'm playing it are reason enough for me to continue going that route.

PSP, or a Droid handset + Wii mote is another killer option. EMU's are free, and so is the Wii application.

PSP hands down is the best portable emulator. It even has better preformance and selection then home system emulators.

I want to chime in with the rest of the PSP crowd. It's just amazing for emulation.

I would try out pspiso
that website has it all
