Discuss.

General rule with these lists: if you think a top fifty game is missing, then let us know what game to drop in place of it. Present your argument well, get it seconded, and it could affect the list... nay, the entire cosmic balance! Really.

Add Gaiares, one of the best horizontal 2D shooters EVER, and the excellent platformer Valis III. Maybe add Shadow Dancer as well?

Drop Greendog, Jurassic Park, Vectorman, or Comix Zone. None of those games ever did anything for me.

I'll second the addition of Shadow Dancer to the list, and the removal of Greendog or JP.

I mean, how many games let you sick your wolf on the enemy? Gotta love it.

I say delete Super Street Fighter 2 for Street Fighter 2: Special Champion Edition. Simply more to do in that game, added to the fact its widely agreed Super SF2 just wasn't a very good SF2 version in comparison to the previous 2 (Champion edition and Hyper Fighting, both of which are on SCE).

I also say Sonic 3 & Knuckles should be added and sonic 3 or sonic & knuckles (or both) be dropped...on their own they were pretty decent games, but together they shined as a true gem of the system. In the place of one of those I'd suggest Starflight, which is a very innovative, open ended, and entertaining game. Few other games I have played are similar to how it plays.

I liked Columns, but I loved Columns 3, with the cheesy story and all.

drop one of the boxing games and kid mario, er chameleon in favor of shining in the darkness (or add it to the shining force games, as it pioneered that streamlined interface and cool character art style).

add mega turrican, lump all the phantasy stars together (i hated 3, but it's there and you can't ignore it, lol), and where's LANDSTALKER, fer cryin' out loud?

I would personally add

Flicky (superb, addictive platformer)
Dynamite Headdy (amazing platformer by Treasure)
Hellfire (my favourite shooter on the Genesis)
Mean Bean Machine (fantastic puzzle title)
Super Hang-On (great racer - at the moment there's only 1 racing game on the list!)

and I would remove

Altered Beast (has not aged well)
Kid Chameleon (very generic Mario clone)
Taz Mania (always found this quite dull)
Evander Holyfield's Real Deal Boxing (not as good as Muhammad Ali Boxing)
Greatest Heavyweights (ditto)

Also, what about the EA "Strike" series? (Desert / Jungle / Urban Strike)? You could also make a good case for the Micro Machines series (3 sequels were released in Europe, they got very good reviews and sold well). BTW, you can actually have 8-player races on some of the Micro Machines games!

Cheers

You left off one of my all-time favorites: POPULOUS

I second Flicky. That game is INSANELY addictive. And Landstalker, of course. How could you forget that? Even if it is way too difficult... I also second Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine and Dynamite Headdy. Treasure forever!!!

Ahem. Anyway... Super Hang-On really ought to be on there. Jurassic Park ought to be brought back too...how many other games let you be a raptor and devour humans? GOOD games, I should say (Turok 2 let you do that, but that game sucked.)

Also, I agree, Kid Chameleon really is rather generic. And even though Altered Beast hasn't aged well, I still love it for its cheese value. "Welcome to your doom!!!!!" "Power UP!" :)

How about Disney's Aladdin? One of Dave Perry's best...and unlike Cool Spot, it doesn't even numb your mind after the first few levels!

Who-hoo! Time to flog yet another dead topic!

Anyway, I nominate Alisia Dragoon, an inventive mix of shooting, platforming, and early monster-breeding. It's challenging, it looks great, and it has one of the best soundtracks among Genesis titles.

To make space for Alisia, I'd dump Raiden Trad, which is a mediocre shell of its arcade originator.

Warsong! That game is my favorite Genesis game, and though it's not the most well-known game, it was the only Langrisser title to be ported to the States. It is unbelievable, a cross between Military Madness for the TG-16 and Shining Force, a great turn-based "Tactics RPG." Anyone else a big fan? Also a game that maybe should be in there: "Powerball." Futuristic Rugby/Soccer/Football that is just so fun and fast-paced...also a lot of fun with a friend. Anyone else play this before? How about one of the Madden football games?

Just a few thoughts here:

Is Road Rash 3 really better than 2 was? I thought you couldn't move freely when going back to your bike in 3, and that always annoyed me, correct me if i'm wrong.

Buck Rogers: Countdown to Doomsday was one of the bst RPG's on Genesis, and deserves a spot.

Out Of This World belongs on there as well as the previously mentioned Flashback.

Star Control was great 2 player fun, and had some great strategy to it, seeing it not on the list is a shame.

I'm kinda confused with your sonci&knuckles entry. Are you saying just the expansion cart, or both sonic, and sonic&knuckles? If it's just s&k then I don't see how you could leave Sonic 1 outta this list. Sonic 3 is when the series started getting stale, and if any should go it should be it, sonic&knuckles should be taking off after it, left shearly for the fact of innovative software.

All in all, games I would remove "in order":

Robocop vs. Terminator

Sonic 3

Virtua Racing

Sonic & Knuckles

BHvrd

In light of seeing what another member posted, I agree that both Sonic 3, and Sonic & Knuckles should bot be removed, they really worked best together, and besides software innovation, there's not much else.

More comments/suggestions:

Madden, the first Madden, if this game doesn't make the list then something is severly wrong. Not only did it start the Madden series, but it was also the best one on the Genny. The first one that is.

I also wanted to second the vote for Populous. It is definitely one of the best, no doubt.

Others I must mention:

Pirates Gold!, it was a good one, and still has much meat to its bones, and it's better than the PC version, a definite highlight!

Haunting: Starring Polterguy, this game had a great idea, and was fun for a little while, but did get kinda boring after awhile, it's still a highlight to the Genesis though, and lead the way for "scare" games.

Madden deserves recognition, without a doubt. I'd second Hellfire as a fantastic shooter aswell.
And I could seee the back of Sonic 3 and one of the Earthworm Jims

Ruudos

I haven't played that many Genny games, but Rocket Knight Adventures belongs in that list!!!

BHvrd
12-14-2002, 05:51 AM
Yes, Rocket Knights does belong on the list, as well as the game I just noticed wasn't, Strider.

There are just too damn many good games on Genesis to squeeze into 50, but it's fun. :)

I recommend removing these:

Alien 3

Earthworm Jim

Earthworm Jim 2

Rolling Thunder 2

I recommend replacing with these:

Madden

Rocket Knight Adventures

Strider

Star Control

I still recommend removing these also:

Sonic 3

Sonic & Knuckles

Robocop vs. Terminator

Virtua Racing

You can replace them with these:

Buck Rogers: Countdown To Doomsday

Populous

Pirates Gold!

[to be decided], maybe use Earthworm Jim as a place holder.

Also, in light of the current crop, I remove my recommendation of these:

Out Of This World

Flashback

Haunting: Starring Polterguy

Of course majority rules. ;)

Whew, let me see what I can shuffle around. Anyone want to second BHVRD's motions? I kinda agree that Road Rash 2 is the best in the series, by the way.

However, I think Madden '93 was the best in that series. The first game had serious AI problems. By the 3rd game they had made numerous improvements not only to the features but to the AI. I just wish they would have kept the ambulance from '92 around, we always got a kick out of that!

ratmankey
12-15-2002, 04:01 AM
I second Strider and Flashback (I can't believe Strider isn't on there!). I also agree that the first Madden definitely should NOT be on the list...come one, it doesn't even have all the teams! I'd go with either 93, 94, or 96.

ratmankey
12-15-2002, 04:12 AM
One more thing: the Streets of Rage series is just one entry on there. Why not do the same for the Sonic series? Not only would that clear up that argument, it would also shave off the excess games.

Butt, when You ask The Question:

i answer:

"Not much man" ...
besides Bears (Cops) in the Air (helicopters)
& a Bastard with a Cattle prod who SHOWS up just in time,
as You are about to Win a Crucial & Critical race....

"Not much man ... Not much at all ...."

Beating an Old topic to Death, .. perhaps ....
However, Please put ROAD RASH in it's rightful, frightful place,

OK some updates have been made and we're back to 50 on the list (by cheating a bit and naming certain games "by series").

By the way, I don't know what you guys see in Zero Tolerance. I went back to play it the other day thinking I missed something since it's in our top 50 and I couldn't remember it being a good game... and it wasn't a good game (IMHO).

you get to run around and shoot stuff 'tl it's dead- what's not to like, lol! i put it up there because among other fun things, it's the only genesis game where you could link up 2 systems (i think it's the only cart game that has this feature)... :hmm:

well, i guess it can be snipped in favor of another game, i dunno, red zone, if need be ( i just went and played it again, and i still have a fondness for it)

Well, this is a great list, and the ongoing conversation only testifies to the quality of the Genesis. I'm not at all surprised how difficult it is to fit 50 games onto the "Best" list.

To begin with, here's what I would lose: Altered Beast, Cyborg Justice, Super Hang-On, and Zero Tolerance. Altered Beast and Super Hang-On are the virtual definition of "launch software." Both titles offer nothing to advance their genres; what we have is a basic side-scroller, and a basic racer. There's nothing that wasn't done better on the NES, besides the larger sprites. And, it must be said, both games look terrible. Cyborg Justice is a fairly good beat-em-up, but the interchangable robot parts is little more than a gimmick in the overcrowded Final Fight genre. And Zero Tolerance is a fine technical achievement (FPS on Genesis), but the game itself isn't very good. It certainly isn't on the same page as Wolfenstein 3-D or Doom.

Second, I like Joe's idea to group together series, provided that the overall quality is high. That's why the Sonic series works, but the Road Rash series wouldn't. This is doubly important for the EA Sports games like NHL and FIFA and Madden. I'd group each of these sports series together; after all, EA Sports was largely responsible for Sega's success in the 16-bit era. Take away those titles, and you take away much of the Genesis' appeal.

Now, here's my suggestions for games to add to the Holy List (that has a nice ring to it):

Ecco the Dolphin (series) - This is the Novotrade game that belongs on the list, not Cyborg Justice. Fiendishly original, with a wonderful atmosphere and a style all its own. Many are put off by Ecco's difficulty, but anyone willing to persevere will find it worth the effort.

Fire Shark - One of my personal favorites, this is the best of the Toaplan shooters. Everything in the game glows with confidence: the sharp graphics; the endless waves of enemy planes, boats, and tanks that attack from every angle; power-up weapons, including a basic 3-shot spread and the flamethrower; the small touches, like soldiers on the airfield and planes that crash on takeoff; and the wonderful guitar-based music, one of the best soundtracks in any game of any era. The ability to play through the game again after winning (on a higher difficulty) ala Contra is a masterstroke.

Micro Machines (series) - Micro Machines is one of the great multiplayer games, and easily one of the most tense. Whoever thought up the points system is a genius; it turns a novelty racing game into an opportunity to pick fights with your friends. Great moment: knocking your friend's car off the tables.

Mega Turrican - As much as I like Contra: Hard Corps, it feels trapped under the shadow of the great Gunstar Heroes. Mega Turrican is the other game that eclipses Konami's title. Another example of the Genesis' mastery of action-based games, with many secrets and great scaling and rotation effects.

Populous - Another one of Genesis' strengths is its collection of computer games, like Wiz 'N Liz and Stormlord and Starflight. Populous beats them all by a mile. How many games can lay claim to establishing a whole genre?

Shinobi 3 - Shadow Dancer is good, but not great. After Revenge of Shinobi, one of the finest action games of the '90s, Dancer feels timid, safe, uninspired. Shinobi 3 is the true sequel, and as potent an example of the Genesis' later days as Revenge was in its time. If nobody wants to switch the two Shinobi games around, then let's group the series together.

Strider - Where, oh, where is Strider? Has anyone forgotton how truly great this game is? The whole game is a collection of brilliant set-pieces, like a furious run down a mountain, a battle in an anti-gravity chamber, and a climb through electrified scaffolds, set against a beautifully-redered sky. Strider is short, but every minute is sublime.

Thunder Force 4 - The problem with creating a masterpiece is that your later work will pale in comparison. But I think that's unfair, especially in regards to TF4. After a slow start, Technosoft builds the excitement and the tension, and builds until the game reaches a fever pitch in the final levels. Every bit the perfect follow-up to TF3. To save space, I'd suggest listing Thunder Force as a series.

Vectorman (series) - I know the first Vectorman is listed, but how about the second? It's more of the same excellence, and is probably the last great Genesis game. In the interest of fairness, I'd suggest grouping them together as a series.

World of Illusion - Like TF4 and Shinobi 3, this is the perfect example of a classic videogame sequel that lies, tragically, in the shadow of their older siblings. But in this case, I would suggest that everyone look at the many Disney-based games over the years, and then rediscover the wonder and imagination of World of Illusion. And the music is terrific; one song, set in the underwater levels, is possibly the best music ever recorded on Genesis.

There ya go. Hope that helps move the discussion along.

p.s. If I were to pick the absolute best of the Genesis, I would go with Gunstar Heroes, Sonic 3 & Knuckles, Thunder Force 3, Fire Shark, and the EA Sports games. And Herzog Zwei would top them all.

klimatron8

ok the list is better..but... What's the fascination with Virtua Racing? - that game's gotta go! (good looks don't equal good gameplay)....

Absolutely have to add NBA LIve ...96 is probably the one. I remember being on a Florida vacation with 4 buddies and we spent the whole week inside playing round robin NBA Live ... The three point machine Chris Mullin vs the unstoppable ShaqFu!

Apparently no agrees with my LaRussa-a revolutionary game that still holds up.

I think TYRANTS should be considered. It's one of the first RTS, I know its not as popular as Herzog Zwei, but I think its just as inventive and original. I can name quite a few games that are like HZ, but I can't name any other game that is like Tyrants.

Also would like to nominate:

-Forgotton Worlds: no one cared to mention this classic shooter? This is an excellent port from the arcades and I'm suprised nobody mentioned it.

-Strider: This has gotton alot of attention on this thread, but is still confusingly absent from the list.

-MERCS: Even the absence of multiplayer doesn't disuade me from thinking this is one of the best action games on the Genesis. The inclusion of the Original Mode makes this game very deep and replayable. Good graphics and awesome power ups are icing on the cake. I've always liked the Ikari Warriors games and its knock-offs, and I think MERCS is the best they came up with in this genre, and is easily the best on the Genesis.

-Gain Ground: Ok, another niche port from the arcades. But again, an awesome conversion, there's not really anything missing from this game. I think its a great mix of Time Soldiers and Tyrants, or maybe I just have a thing for using high tech weaponry on a low tech enemy. I just never get bored of using a Bazooka on some guy thats shooting arrows at me.

Games I think should be removed:

-Skitchin
-Altered Beast
-Virtua Racing

OK...I have one word to say: SHADOWRUN!!!!!!
>) Shadowrun is IMHO the best game on the Genesis.
It is in my top 5 RPGs of all time, also.
WHY HASN'T ANYONE MENTIONED THIS MASTERPIECE YET?!?!?!

Also, I second General Chaos!!! That game is full of multiplayer madness.

And also add Contra: Hard Corps and Castlevania: Bloodlines. Great Konami games!!!!

Duncan

Virtua Racing was certainly innovative and fun for a while, but it's certainly not the best driving game on the Genesis. That honor has to go to...

The Duel: Test Drive II

Besides having three of the most incredible supercars ever created (the Ferrari F40, Lamborghini Diablo and Bill Gates' very own Porsche 959), it was a much better substitute for "real" driving than something like Hard Drivin'. (That game was just painful.)

I also agree strongly about Micro Machines. Far from just a kiddie game!

And where Road Rash is concerned, it's a tough call between RR 2 or 3. But then, I even liked the semi-crappy PlayStation and N64 versions!

Duncan :D

You still don't have Flashback listed there, and it easily qualifies as one of the top 50 Genesis games. Flashback, but not Out of this World IMO.

Ristar should be on the list. Ristar got lost in the shuffle of mascot platformers but it is a great character w/great visuals & music and great fun play mechanics too. Ristar is a 'lost Sonic Team' game in many ways.

I personally think that Super Monaco GP (the original one only) should be listed. The deep throaty bass sound of the downshift, the gravelly "come one!", the ability to choose rivals (some of whom are egotistical idiots), and the need to know the courses (all 16 of 'em!) and password saves, it all adds up to a great racing experience with a nice mix of arcade and sim aspects. In fact, I'd love to play this same game but done in true arcade System-16 fashion!

Super Hang On is a great racer. I suspect it is only a 4 megabit cart, and had it been developed a year or two later w/8meg it would have surely fixed some graphical issues smoothness issues, but regardless the game works. I'd keep in on the list; launch software or not it is infinitely replayable.

Games to get rid of IMO: Skitchin, Zero Tolerance, Alien 3.

Contra the Hardcorps (going by the title on the Japanese version) is one of my favorites on the system, but I haven't had a chance to play the actual thing on a real Genesis system (grr) so I'll hold off on this. I liked a lot of the music when I first became acquainted with this one, but it doesn't have the staying power of much other Konami music, and it does wear out a good deal. Still, the gameplay mechanics are sound and the weapons varied with very few too odd to use comfortably.

After playing with Revenge of Shinobi the last few days on my Genesis, I do see that it is very good indeed! Millitary levels suck, but the rest isn't bad at all! Shadow Dancer is OK, but it's sad that we don't have a decent port of the arcade game as a result. Music is good fun, but again, not that great. Shinobi 3 has lots of good stuff, and...well? Graphics aren't a problem, though some different game characters have too much contrast. Some of the music here is wonderful -- take Whirlwind -- but the execution really isn't that accomplished. Tunes for these two post-ROS games are essentially just a bunch of bleeps put together.

Comix Zone and Ecco -- the PC ports are much better than the Genesis versions, though the difference is more marked with Ecco.

I second the following AWSOME games:

Star Control - Super fantastic 2 player
Road Rash 2 - Eveyone knows why
Toe Jam & Earl - Funny, fun, what else do i need to say?

I could go through life with only these three genesis games ( It would be less then ideal, ovbously, but it could be done).

oooooh. how could you leave ecco out. and how come it took so long for someone to notice. I also bump on the flashback, strider and MK2. I also think PS3 is as good as the others in the series. But since I am the only one who said so I guess I stand alone on that one.

You're perfectly correct in that this would not only allow an extra slot (or 2 or 3) for other games but this would qualify as a top "cartridge", not a top game. We've shied away from compilations on these lists with the exception of something like Super Mario All-Stars, which actually enhances the games contained therein. Since 6-Pak is a straight copy of pre-existing games, I'm gonna make the call that it does not qualify here.

Rocket Knight Adventures has to be on that list. Its got great music, looks nice and is really really fun, and challenging too (especially on hard) :)

I'd remove either:
Robocop vs Terminator- better on master system
Alien 3- sort of boring, with all the maze like searching
Dragons Fury- Ive never really been a fan of pinball games.

Personally, i think Rocket Knight is among the best platformers ever and has surely earned its place in history ;)

Seconded. It's one of my favorite Genesis games too. It's got some truly memorable moments, the game is vastly underrated, a Konami classic.

NOOOOOOO!!!!!

I think they're going for "suspense" but I'd be willing to swap Rocket Knight in for this one. Any major Alien3 supporters? This is your time to speak up!

Dragons Fury- Ive never really been a fan of pinball games.

I'd say Wardner should be on that list. It's one of my top fav Genny games, and though it's not perfect in every respect, it's a fun title that deserves recognition. But maybe Altered Beat should be taken off; it's fun, and it's full of cheese and all that, but when you get right down to it, it's not one of the best. Please don't flame me for that, I love it too, but it's not one of the best games for the Genny.

Oh and yes please, strip out Alien 3 for RKA. That game is so great, it should be on a top games of ALL TIME list!

I absolutely love this game. Shouldnt Sparkster be on there as well? I actually enjoyed it.

Couple idea's here:

1) Shinobi 3 for Revenge of Shinobi

I always though that Shinobi 3 was a more fun and fast paced game, whereas ROS is REALLY slow at times and just doesn't seem as fun. I would think the only reason to keep it is because of the "old style/ classic" thing.

2) Out of this World for Mega Bomberman
Out of this World is a REAL classic game, it it's challenge and for having the *almost& best graphics for the Genesis. Mega Bomberman, in my opinion, is the worst Bomberman in the entire series, just not that much good.

Drop Altered Beast- it really doesn't do anyhting for me, or quite a few people looking at this topic, and Golden Axe and Streets of Rage dump on it from quite a height IMO. Insert the Micro Machines series- especially Turbo Tournament '96, with its track editor and gazillions of gameplay modes (not to mention the "extra joypad ports welded into the cartridge itself") is easily an all-time classic.

Also, if you're talking pinball games, drop Dragon's Fury for Psycho Pinball- Psycho is an amazing pinball game that's hardly ever out of my Megadrive nowadays, the "4 in 1" table in particular is a thing of true beauty. :D

I haven't heard thisone yet, and maybe I'm the only one who liked it, but I liked Decap Attack: Starring Chuck D. Head. My brother and I played that for who knows how long.

I also agree that Flicky needs a spot, most guys hate admitted they are addicted to it, and those of us with gal friends/fiances who arent into games, no that there are 2 games no girl can resist, tetris and FLICKY.

I'd say Altered Beast can be axed. It's a classic and all, but just cause something is classic doesnt make it the best. Plan 9 from outer space is considered a classic, and it's also considered terrible. Now, altered Beast is not terrible, but it is WAY to short and wasn't different enough level to level.
Rembered more for being a pack in than for being great.

I don't know how many people would agree with me but some of my favorite Genesis games missing from that list are:

Out of this World
DeCap Attack (well maybe this one's just be and that guy above me. :P)
Aladdin (I thought it was better then the SNES platformer and Mickey's Castle of Illusion. One of the best Disney licensed games I've ever played.)
Lion King (see Aladdin)
Shining Force (well you do have it on the list... rightly so. :D )
Haunting Staring Polterguy
Shadowrun
Pirates! Gold!

Amen, G!

I've been waiting for someone to notice that game. It was just about the most popular Genesis game with my friends. Of course, it helped that I could plow through the whole game (before getting hammered the second time through).

There are a lot of excellent arcade ports on the Gen.

i have to say that these games deserve a place on the list:

Michael Jackson's Moonwalker - the game is great! loved it!
Decap Attack: Starring Chuck D. Head - very original, very cool
Haunting Starring Politer Guy - scaring has never been more fun!

I just happened onto this thread because of a locked thread in the main forum. Had no intention of posting, was just checking it out. But what the hell?

Mortal Kombat?
Zombies Ate My Neighbors?
Samurai Shodown?
Zero Tolerance?
Alien 3?
Space Invaders 91?

Seeing as we have the likes of Dr. Robotnik, Robocop v Terminator (what?), Vectorman, a Mutant League game (huh?), and that weak, weak version of SF2, there is clearly room to grow here. Although not seeming real likely since the list hasn't been updated since October?

No Mortal Kombat? Man...

weak version of SFII?

the genny version had accurate control, and all the speed you could ever want. The only thing it really lacked was sound.

I've never played Populous on the Genesis but I played it on the SNES and it can't be that much different so I totally agree it should be in the top 50. I also never played Out of This World on the Genesis but it was one of my favorite games on the SNES and, again, it can't be much different on the Genesis so it should also be there.

Im not sure Psycho Pinball got a genesis release, though it does look like a good game (for pinball anyway) :P

Perhaps Golden Axe 2 should be up instead of the original. I havent actually played the second, but from what i hear its a (very) slight improvement on the original, yet keeps the 3 main characters (as opposed to GA3).

I also think MK2 is good enough to be up there, but im not sure if theres anything up there that deserves to be replaced with MK2 :o

One last thing, i recently played the genesis rom of RKA, and i think i should mention that when i say:

challenging too (especially on hard)

I mean PAL Mega Drive hard, which i think is actually the same as Genesis Normal. If any genesis gamers think RKA is too hard, i might be inclined to agree. Still a great game though :-P

Just a few minor nitpicks:
- Madden '93 should be removed and replaced with either '94 or '97.
- Why is NHL '95 on there instead of NHL '94 which is usually considered to be the best hockey game ever?
