So...
This year ive been on a mission to beat the original 6 nes megaman games in order no less.I originally owned 2 and 3 but never came close to beatin either. So far ive nailed 1-4 and had a copy of 6 given to me for my last birthday.
So i was lookin to pick up a 5 but noticed it is one of the more pricey in the series. Stupidly i looked to youtube for some reviews to maybe explain the jump in value. Whats weird is that most people say its the worst in the series...?:?
I say stupidly because i got to admit i was a little tainted by the reviews. Well i picked up a copy for a "fair" price and it should be on its way.
Im still gonna play it, i still plan on beating it and the series for that matter.
Just curious what you guys thought about it??? good, bad whatever...

IMHO Mega Man (pre-32-bit era) is like pizza somewhat. Even a "bad" Mega Man game is still pretty good.

^ Agreed. It's hard to go wrong if you follow a formula like oldschool Mega Man (or pizza).
I'm quite fond of #5, myself - it is, after all, more of the same and well worth owning. My main criticism, if any, is that I don't feel it has as distinct a personality as the four before it. The level design doesn't feature as many highlights, the robot masters aren't as inspired, etc. There's also the loss of your charge when hit compared to 4 which I can see frustrating people, but I don't find that too big a deal.

I approve of this analogy.

I also like WarriorFan's analogy.
But even more than that, I'd have to say the Gravity Man stage is a total gem that stands up to any Mega Man game.

By all accounts I have read, it is right up there with 2 as one of the best in the series.

I had never played any Mega Mans until late 2008 (when I got into collecting), and I played all 6 in order.
I don't remember any of them being a let down, each one provided great bosses and stages. If you liked the first ones, then you'll like 5 as well.

Yeah, I think it's one of the better ones, and widely acknowledge as such. It's one of the easier ones, so people aren't happy unless they're facing testicle crushing difficulty might not like it. But it does a few things to mix up the formula a little bit and is really fun.

No, it is not bad.
I really enjoyed part 5, even though it seemed a bit easy (sans Crystal Man Stage, which took me some time to learn to avoid the falling crystals).
All are great. The one I did not enjoy as much was part 4 for some reason, but it too was a great title.

I own it (one of the few original carts that made it to my hands!) and I really like it, although I do agree that it's somewhat easier than the previous ones. That's not the same as saying that is an easy game, though.
There's also the loss of your charge when hit compared to 4 which I can see frustrating people, but I don't find that too big a deal.
Oh damn, that REALLY got on my nerves until I finally got used to it! Mega Man 4 is the one I played the most (and my favorite as well - yeah, I know!), so it was really hard for me to make the shift...

I once had a Mega Man marathon and played all 6 games in a row. After completing Mega Man 4 and moving onto 5, I did notice a slight decrease in originality. Be it the music, boss designs or level designs, Mega Man 5 just felt really formulaic, even for a Mega Man game.
Still, it's great I'd say it's my least favorite, but the pizza analogy rings true.

Mega Man 4 is my least favorite though being the last in the series that I've played may have been reason for that(first time was on MMAC.) I owned Mega Man 1, 2, and 3, when I was younger and 5 and 6 were two I would've played at a friends house. Since I didn't play 5 and 6 often, I didn't remember a lot of the bosses. Like Snapple mentioned though, Gravity Mans stage really stood out and he was the only boss I remembered from Mega Man 5 when I picked up and started playing it on Mega Man Anniversary Collection.
Anyways. Like everyone else said. Any Mega Man game is a good game. Atleast until you play the X and Zero games, which there are X games and Zero games that aren't that great.

COOL!!!!
I feel alot better now!!! lol
I love the pizza analogy!!! I kinda thinking the same thing. Its Megaman!!!! How bad could it be? Dam youtube reviewers put the fear in me!!!
So far ive loved 1-4. I thought the whole plot twist in 4 was great.
You guys set me back on track looking forward to gettin this game in the mail and tearin up some levels .Its gettin really hard to resist the label on part 6 calling to me!!! lol

Well i got the game yesterday....
First off i now regret the title of this thread... lol
I thought mega man 5 was awsome!!! The wave man stage with jetski was cool!!! The gravity man stage was great!!! I had a lil bit of a tuff time with that stage because i had been playin metalstorm while waitin for mm5 to come in the mail, wich led me to keep tryin to flip my self at the worst times... I even dug the cheesy "protoman" storyline.
The only, only I repeat only gripe is its an easy game...
I got thru the 8 robotmasters in one session, a couple not even using there weakness.I got thru the proto man and wily stages in another session but couldnt get the last wily boss. Ill get it tonight for sure!!! The other games took me a couple of times to get thru the stages and find the correct order to beat the masters in. (no internet stradegy guides for me!!! lol)
All that being said i still liked this game. While not as much of a challange as lets say part 4 it was still alot of fun!!!
Sorry capcom i should have known better!!!!
