Genesis buzzing?

I have my Genesis (model 2) and 32x hooked up with their proper Sega brand A/C adapters.

Pop in a game, turn it on - loud buzzing sound, from the speakers of my television. I removed the 32x, put a game in the Genesis by itself, and no buzzing whatsoever. Crystal clear.

So, it's the 32x. Or is it?

I plugged in a Game Genie, which has an on-off switch with LED (and leeches off the Genesis, I suppose). Loud buzzing with this combination, the same as when the 32x is hooked up.

I've tried swapping the power cables for the 32x and the Genesis, which may or may not be the same voltage (haven't checked) but I still get the same results.

Can't you use a Genesis with a 32x or a Game Genie without an awful loud buzzing sound?

(and just so I don't catch any flack, I'm using the Game Genie to make Contra: Hard Corps playable)

I assume your playing your Genesis on a CRT with an RF hookup?

If so, try positioning your system farther away if possible. The buzzing sounds like RF interference to me.

The Genesis is hooked up with RCA cables, and I'm playing on a 720p HDTV.

Even when it was hooked up via RF (on the same TV) I had the same problem.

The fact that I can get perfectly clear audio without the Game Genie or 32x in the slot baffles me.

To be honest, I am too, as the 32X just uses Genesis audio...Perhaps you should try another 32X if you can get one.

Perhaps you have a grounding problem? Maybe a ground loop? Also are your power adapters supplying enough voltage? Test them with a voltmeter.

It might just be my Genesis, now that I think about it. I got it fairly cheap, and it was dropped once... and the bottom is cracked and a metal thing is bent inwards. It sure functions well for being messed up.

I will have to check my power adapters, they might be the culprit.

That metal thing is the RF shield and it makes contact with the board's ground. Being bent inwards could cause it to be making contact with something it shouldn't be. Bending it back into it's proper position might take care of your problem. Don't be afraid to remove it and give it a good pounding with your hammer.

I think I'll try that. Just take it apart, clean it the best I can, and hopefully straighten out that metal piece. I'll report back on what happens.

I've never taken apart a Genesis before... do I need special tools? I mean, I'll just look, but that'd be interesting if I could take this apart with only a philips head.

Just took it apart, all philips head screws. Nice. I can't get the motherboard out, going to check youtube for a video.

So, I got the motherboard out. Cleaned everything, straightened the metal piece, and reassembled. Still the same issue.

Does everyone have this buzzing problem with a 32x hooked up?

Clean the sega 32x contacts and see if that works if not just try a genesis game with out the 32x system and see if theres no buzzing are you useing sega power packs?

For the 32X, it might be a problem with the cable that connects the output of the Genesis to the input of the 32X. I would suggest trying a different cable but they're really hard to get unless you buy another system with hookups.

I'm not sure what would cause a problem with the Game Genie.

Problem fixed.

I just bought a JVC X'Eye. Has no sound issues. Haven't tried it with the 32X yet, but otherwise it works well with the Game Genie.

I tried the Game Genie in mutliple Genesis consoles, with several different power adapters, all of which were Sega brand. I even plugged the Genesis directly into the wall, instead of a power strip. Did nothing, still got the buzzing. Oh well.

It *might* be my TV. Though, I doubt it.
